MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

Uhmm, stew for brains, that “fence” would cast $15 billion to $20 billion, at least, and it wouldn’t keep anyone out.

Any candidate who runs as a RINO is going to get flack from both directions, left and right. The price of being a moderate. The Donkeys don’t have that problem as their party no longer allows any moderation what so ever. Ask Joe LieBerman.

Orders of magnitude more expensive, and still North Koreans make it into South Korea despite the North's best efforts. Still "ineffective," as Perry would say.

What is stupid is thinking that we don’t have the power to secure our own border, unless you like it that way.....

The attitude of these very vocal and extremely adamant anti wall/fence jerks is well there is nothing we can do about it "better lay back and enjoy". Better put some ice on that.

The truth is most of them employ illegals or benefit in some way from the cheap labor.

Yeah, that border wall, it’s really working for the Israelis. You’re as much in denial as liberals with their rainbow-colored unicorns are.

I doubt it would “cast” that much.

You’re correct, it would “cost” instead; although I suppose one could say that it would be just like “casting” $15 billion to $20 billion into the garbage can.

Perry, I have made this offer before. Give me the money and I will build the fence in 18 months.

No RINOS, No PERRY in '12. Staying home is an option. You've convinced me. Writing in Palin makes more sense. Come on third party. Where's the Donald? Doesn't Perot have any kids?

It’s toooo harrrrdddd. Yea, like a 5 year old.

...I do wonder how many of our long-held positions we have to compromise on in order to rationalize Perry for president.

We did it in 2008, and it made me sick back then.

It appears they are willing to sacrifice the huge gains made in the Primaries as well....some never do learn a Rhino is just that....no matter the disguises he wears....but seems some Freepers still want 'an imposter' rather than the real thing.

It's going to rain in Austin in 2 days!

Yeah, I've been there, but I also know where the crop growing regions are and where you are more limited and have to do livestock.

Even then your average rainfall over a 10 year period will usually remove the whole state from the category of "desert".

I think it's more accurate to describe the non agricultural regions in West Texas "semi arid" with some small "arid" parts.

Yes, I've been in Elpaso when it rained, Odessa when it rained, Austin when it rained, Dallas when it rained, Houston when it rained (certainly not news eh) and even Waco when it rained.

On one stupid trip a bunch of us ended up in Houston when it DID NOT RAIN ~ that was a most memorable trip. Our plane pulled out to get in line and stayed there three hours while somebody did something ~ so they pulled the liquor cabinet open and we all drank for free.

We were supposed to go to San Antonio once for a couple of weeks but that got cancelled and our guy from San An came up to meet us for training.

BTW, much of Texas has this problem the Mid-Atlantic has. If you didn't get hurricanes every now and then you'd be semi-arid. Georgia is beginning to fall into that category ~ mostly due to water demand. If they only had 100,000 folks they'd have enough water.

So what were you saying about the mileage on the Rio? Take a look at it ~ look at just the part adjacent to Texas ~ not that part running up through New Mexico, et al, just your part. It flows into Elpaso ~ which is already a semi-arid region, not a desert, and less than halfway to its termination on the Gulf it's in sub-tropical areas with plenty of rain. You can actually SEE this from the air ~ it's pretty obvious at the 100th Meridian. One side gets 20 inches of rain or more per year and the other side gets less. There's also the Caprock Escarpment that marks the edge of the Llano Estacado. But the Llano is NOT exactly "desert", just a bit more elevated. Plus the caliche clay deposits give it a different color.

These features are all visible from the air, and less so on the ground ~ plus, the tacos are better in Elpaso.

Only problems I ever had in Texas occurred when we'd be trapped downtown and have to be dependent on the hotel restaurants for meals ~ (problem with having all your major postal facilities in the business districts).

Did I miss something? How about my old girlfriend in Waco?

Whether it be the heat of the desert or the cold of the mountains the illegal aliens are often saved by the US Border Patrol and taken to nearby hospitals..... The ambulance transporting the illegals and the hospital treating the illegals are NEVER PAID...... The only remuneration the hospitals and ambulance services receive is by marking up US citizen’s ambulance and hospital bills to cover their losses. Yes, we pay for the illegals.

There are about a hundred US hospitals along the US / Mexican border. ......Each of these hospitals loses an average of two million dollars a year for the treatment of ‘just illegals brought in through the emergency room’ due to debilitation from exposure....... Many of these illegals can spend six months in intensive care with an average daily cost of $2,000.....

Usually these cases are from heat stroke and the prognosis is very poor. The families do not allow the hospital to discontinue life support and at some point the patient is returned to Mexico where they then die.

Yes, even half a million dollars to maintain the illegal who is incapable of ever regaining consciousness and is then returned to Mexico where they die.

(Exerts...From the Border Patrol.)

“Opinions vary” - snicker. Yeah, as to whether it would be $7 billion, or $10 billion, or $15 billion, or more. Tell me, do you really think - as impoverished as your intellect might be - that a single-strand barbed-wire fence strung along 6” diameter poles stuck in the ground every 3 to 4 feet is going to stop even the most effete of illegal immigrants?

No, I didn’t think so. That means that “cheap” is out of the question.

And after we spend $15 billion to $20 billion on a Wall-to-Nowhere, that will still be the case, if it really is in the first place.

More money has been thrown at the Texas Border than any other state too no avail....cameras, patrols and all the other tricks have not stopped the problem...especailly since the Border agents are told to keep the number of apprehended illegals low.....yes, they let them pass...

Perry gets told no because he’s fueling the immigration into his state....you don’t put gas on a fire and then run to Washington and ask for money to put the fire out....

It would pay you to visit the Border Patrol site and see whats really going on from those who Patrol it...and report the facts.

A fence is definately in order....and the border closed to clean up the mess there. No question about it.
