MIDDLEBURY One child is dead and five injured after their pony cart was struck by an SUV in the 10500 block of County Road 24 in Middlebury.
According to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, around 10 Monday morning the children pulled out onto the road and into the path of the eastbound SUV.
One child, 10-year-old Jenna Miller, died at the scene from head injuries.
Police say the pony, which was also killed, was pulling two carts. The SUV only hit the pony and the first cart.
Three medical helicopters were called in to take four of the children to the hospital. Two were in serious condition and two were in critical condition.

Damn, who was not watching their children.
They all have the same last name - are all of these children siblings? OMG - Prayers for their family. And prayers to for the driver - just a horrible, horrible accident.
They are the ruination of America, I tell ya.
All the kids in the same family.
Prayers offered for the recovery of the other Miller children.
The SUV did it, not the driver. They were even consoling her(the driver)at the site.
What an awful accident - for the kids & their families and the poor woman driver.
Oh, no ...
I am curious though is the family Mennonites? Miller is a common name for Amish and Mennonites.
This is the second time in two days I have heard Middlebury, Indiana mentioned. Prior to that, I only knew of Middlebury, Vermont.
Oh no is right. Darn monitor gets all fuzzy when I read these stories.
God grant the families strength and peace in their time of sorrow.
“I am curious though is the family Mennonites? Miller is a common name for Amish and Mennonites.”
I was wondering that too
From what I can gather no one is blaming the driver.
She’s going to need our prayers too.
Heartbreaking all around.
How sad for the pony.
Either siblings or cousins.
One child dead, and four with serious head trama, all in the same family and you are sad for the pony?
No, looks like just run of the mill folk, the dolly wheels for the cart is new and rubber tire. You can see it in the picture.
All of the children had first names that started with J, like the Duggars. I’m guessing that they all have the same parents, and another child has died since the accident. Jenna, Jeneva, Jared, Jolisa, Joyce, & Justin. Prayers for all of them and prayers for their family and for the SUV driver.
Very Amish area, lots of carts on the roads in that County.
Elkhart County Amish aren’t all that conservative. Rubber tired pony carts are common.
The one in the picture is a northern tool, tractor supply, new wagon are trailer converted to a cart. If you click on the picture it give the gps location
My guess is that the pony spooked and the cart had no brakes. Very sad.
“another child has died since the accident”
Oh, those poor parents.
I can imagine the dad hooking the pony up to the cart so the kids would have fun, and then this horrible accident killing and seriously injuring his children.
It’s hard to think about
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department reported that Jenna Miller, 10, died at the scene about 30 miles east of South Bend. Deputies told The Elkhart Truth and WSBT-TV that Jolisa Miller, 7, died after being airlifted to Fort Wayne Parkview Hospital.
The driver of the cart, Jeneva Miller, 10, and Joyce Miller, 9, also were airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with head injuries. The Truth reported that Jeneva was listed in critical condition Monday night, while Joyce was in fair condition.
The driver of the SUV, Kathy Butterfield, 60, of Bristol, was not injured but was visibly shaken as she was consoled by nearby residents. She was not cited at the scene.
Just read another report....they’re Amish
Whatever you say, but all those mailbox post have news paper boxes on them and I have never seen an Amish newspaper.
Two Amish children killed, 4 injured in SUV accident
Hey, I’m just the messenger.
You can argue with the writer of the article.
Sad, I heard a second child died. Prayers up for the remaining children and their parents.
