John Birch Society: Rick Perry Proposed Bi-National Health Insurance with Mexico
The New American ^ | 05 September 2011 | Kelly Holt

Posted on 09/05/2011 4:59:14 PM PDT by Tempest

The article focused on Perry’s comments at a Border Summit speech in south Texas (8-22-01), days before the 9-11 attacks, about bi-national health insurance — Texas-funded coverage for both U.S. and Mexican border residents. The governor’s statement favored a study, required by the Legislature, about "the feasibility of bi-national health insurance.”

The DMN continued, "Katherine Cesinger, spokeswoman for Perry’s campaign, downplayed the topic of bi-national health insurance. 'A bill was passed by the Legislature that authorized a study to look into this issue, which ultimately concluded there were numerous barriers to accomplishing that idea, and the Legislature took no further action on this concept,' she said." However, in spite of the Legislature’s failure to act, Perry made clear his willingness to funnel Texas’s assets to Mexico.

{SNIP}

Perry has consistently positioned himself as a social and fiscal conservative, but the above comments reveal a different record. Indeed, four years later, Perry noted his approval of a bigger example of socialized medicine when he embraced Hillary Clinton’s national health care plan.

What EVER.

It would be nice if there were a way to get Mexico to kick in for the medical costs incurred by their citizens that they freely encourage to seek their fortunes in El Coloso Del Norte without even asking it a formal by-your-leave.

Actually, that sounds like a good idea. The United States government will pay for health insurance for all United States citizens in Mexico and the Mexican government can pay for health insurance for all Mexican nationals in the United States. I’m for it!!!

Thread predictions...

Obama will win because the only way to fight a communist is with a bigger communist.

Obama’s Saul Alinsky and Reverend Wright ties matter. But Perry policy speeches and letter don’t matter because they were written aa long time ago...

Border fence? We don’t need a border fence. we just need to get ride of the incentives. You know like the Texas Dream Act and guest worker programs Perry wants so badly.

San Dieago has this in place where people who live on the border can get treatment on either side. It’s insurance, people pay for so that they can utilize the facilities on both sides of the border. Mexico has some good medical facilities that caters to US citizens who need cheaper care.

The “substance of the thread” is that Perry was trying to get money for Texas insurance companies, and that he also wanted the Mexican government to pay for HC costs of Mexican nationals in Texas.

This one really is going to backfire on you, but I’m sure you’re used to it.

Whatever teapot you’re in needs to pour you out into the tupperware bowl and seal the lid firmly. This is crazy. You are the boy who cried wolf.

Perry’s errors have not involved anything as vicious as Wright’s infamous “God Damn America” or Alinsky’s flirtation with real bombs that are meant to do nothing but kill and maim.

Guess what, this is already being utilized in San Diego! It’s not free care but a freaking insurance policy available for those who live on or very near the border. There are some excellent medical facilities over the border that caters to US citizens that are thousands of dollars cheaper.

It’s no different than Sarah Palin’s family utilizing Canadian healthcare because that was the closest and better health option available.

This is actually a CONSERVATIVE and FREE MARKET IDEA ! SEE I CAN POST IN CAPS TOO!!!!!!! It gives working people a choice in their health care options. Do you know how many old people do chartered tours across the border to get cheap medicine?

Nice to see you post an article that paints Perry in a positive light for a change.

You did read it and understand it, didn't you?

Or, did you just see "Perry" and "Mexico" in the same headline over at the DUmp and decide to run it over here to post it and see if you could get things stirred up again?

For anybody who cares about the truth (clearly not the OP), here is what Perry did.

He endorsed a newly proposed (circa 2001) Texas law that would allow PRIVATE Texas insurance companies to issue policies to US and Mexican citizens living within 62 miles of the border. The government would play ZERO role outside of changing the law so the insurance companies could offer the product.

It was a 100% free market solution to a huge problem in Texas -- the state with the largest number of residents in the country without health insurance.

The OP is trying to trash Perry, as usual, but his approach to this issue is 180 degrees from ObamaCare, or RomneyCare, or HillaryCare.

Not everyone agrees with Perry's approach, but the notion that this was some sort of secret giveaway of Texan's hard earned tax dollars to Mexicans is absurd.
