Sen. Sessions signals GOP will oppose Obama's $300 billion jobs plan
The Hill ^ | September 7, 2011 | Pete Kasperowicz

Posted on 09/07/2011 8:44:03 AM PDT by maggief

Senate Budget Committee Ranking Member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) on Wednesday signaled that Republicans would oppose the $300 billion jobs plan President Obama is expected to unveil Thursday, saying that it would only put the U.S. further in debt at a time when the debt is already weighing on the economy.

"There's no doubt in my mind that the debt that we've now incurred is already weakening our economy," Sessions said on the Senate floor. "It comes to a point that you can't keep borrowing in a futile attempt to stimulate the economy when the increased debt itself is weakening the economy."

(snip)

"And this plan calls for over $300 billion in spending anew," he said. "Not paid for, we're already in debt, we're already borrowing 40 cents of every dollar we spend, so we're going to add another $300 billion in spending, not paid for, borrowed, every penny of it.

"At some point, this country gets to a position where you cannot continue to borrow without damaging the economy," he added. "It's just that simple."

The Pubbies should oppose this. What happened to all those “shovel ready” jobs that were supposed to have been created after the first stimulus? Now Obama wants Billions more? What, are the teacher’s unions running out of cash?

If it didn’t have any positive results the first time, why is it going to work this time? I don’t get it.

That’s because it’s not a jobs plan. It’s a campaign strategy and the Republicans will have no choice but oppose it. Then Obama will say that the Republicans won’t let him fix the economy.

Just attach a provision first requiring a full audit of the first Stimulus before funds are made available and then let him choke on it.

We should quit playing the game of calling it a jobs plan. Hussein is merely SPENDING MONEY that doesn’t exist. Remember Hussein’s “job plan” in 2009? That pile of dung cost nearly $1T, and UNEMPLOYMENT WENT UP!

Anyone with a 2nd grade education ought to know Hussein is in over his head.

I have a question - if we have already reached the NEW DEBT LIMIT....how do we pay for a $300 billion ‘jobs’ plan.

Exactly ... the same way I wouldn't let a surgeon fix my gout by cutting off my foot.

A) The Government Cannot Create Wealth. It must take in order to function. Only the private sector can do this.

B) The Government is Broke because they always spend more than what they have. It does not matter how much tax revenue they have. Trust me they will spend it all.

C) The quickest way to generate wealth in our nation is to lower taxes and regulation and/or reform the tax code.

d) The government also needs to balance it’s check books like the rest of us do.

They should, because it’s recycled BS. Why does the media bother leaving in the word “jobs”? It’s like when a mugger stops you and asks if you have a light. You ALL know that not only does he not have a cigarette, you’re going to end up in the hospital if you’re lucky and the morgue if you’re not. We ALL know Obama’s plans have nothing to do with jobs.

That’s because it’s not a jobs plan. It’s a campaign strategy and the Republicans will have no choice but oppose it. Then Obama will say that the Republicans won’t let him fix the economy.

That's fine. Checkmate in 4 moves.

Obama is a great speechifyier, after a fashion, but a lousy tactician. He's going to push the Republicans without having them cornered. They're going to simply take a step back, and leave him stranded on stage. Exposed for the world to see. No plan. No power. No hope.

It's bad when your enemies defeat you, but far worse when they ignore you and show no respect for you as a threat. Obama is rapidly losing his credibility as a threat, which makes it advantageous for the GOP to be menaced by him. They can politely push him around, deny his requests, twist them into things he didn't want, or otherwise two-step him until the clock runs out.

Obama has no options. His bark is worse than his bite, and his lame-duck bark is increasingly derided by his own party. He has no real plan to use as a weapon, just a list of talking points he wants Congress to hammer into a big pile of Obama-win. They have no incentive to do so. He can go to the American people, but Americans hate weakness, losers, and people who suck at their jobs.

Obama has proven himself to be a weak loser who sucks at his job. He'll find an American public increasingly uninterested in what he has to say, and even less so in his crying and moaning that he gets no respect from the GOP. It's better to be feared than loved, and Obama is increasingly neither.

That's an easy one: Just raise the Debt Limit again.

Remember that the Pubbies gave Obama the privilege of raising it whenever he deemed necessary.

Extending unemployment benefits and the 2% reduction in FICA taxes again will not stimulate the economy. The Reps would be smart to attack the SS reduction as decreasing revenue for SS and hastening its demise. Obama's statement that he couldn't assure that SS checks would go out during the debt ceiling negotiations should be used against him during this battle.

Everyone knows that Obama's proposals will not pass the House and that it is just part of his reelection campaign to put the blame on the Reps. The Reps should respond politically to counter this strategy. SS is a double-edged sword.

I would add:

e)Immediately end the moratorium on drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, ANWR, etc.

f)Institute a moratorium on government regulations which cripple businesses. Start with the EPA.

g)Roll back or end the minimum wage.

Stimulating the economy and creating jobs isn't that complicated; it's pretty simple. Get the government out of the way and out of everybody's pockets. The real problem is that "brilliant minds" like Obama's cannot/will not see and accept the truth.

Republicans strategy should be simple.

“You said you had a plan. ok, tell us how you plan on cutting 300 billion to pay for this? And if you already knew how you would cut 300 billion, why did you ask for a debt ceiling increase?”

“Finally someone is framing the argument correctly.”

No he is not framing the argument correctly. Getting drawn into this debate one “bill” at a time is on barrys terms and is a gift for the dims. All the Republicans should be talking about now is the big picture. That is how unserious the democrats are. They have no scorable budgets or overall plan to get us out of this economic mess and choose to campaign 24/7. Otherwise we will be in this situation every few months with barry demanding another few hundred billion and the Republicans back peddling.

Looks like the republicans are taking the bait. It’s just a speach. Ignore it. He will never put it in writing. He never does. That’s why Piglosi is so mad that there won’t be a republican response Thursday night. They just want the narrative that the republicans aren’t cooperating.

"Obama is a great speechifyier.."

NO LONGER...

Objectively, the 2008 campaign was masterful...all smoke and mirrors, and back then he was a talented, gifted, orator....I think the Dems were tired of Hillary..they wanted something new, and in the general election..he was so smooth next to the old looking, and sounding McCain.

if you listen to him now..he's a shadow of 2008...he talks jive..pseudo ghetto..chopped, clipped speech...he looks almost scared...

It'll be interesting to see the 3rd and 4th quarter Obama fundraising numbers...if the well starts to dry up..well then..

The real trip about shovel ready jobs is that less than 5% of Americans are willing to pick up a shovel and dig a hole. Most go rent the equipment to dig holes when doing even weekend projects. I have several hoes and shovels and picks and have used them all day long in working on my land scape. I rarely rent stuff. But, not American. They ain’t breaking a sweat for less than $30 an hour, 30 days vacation, 30 days sick leave, 14 days just to clear the mind, 15 holidays a year, all medical, dental and full retirement for life. Unless they get all that, they ain’t picking up no shovel. Oh, and only 4 hour work days for a total of 16 hours per week. They only work 4 days per week.

“Looks like the republicans are taking the bait. It’s just a speach. Ignore it.”

You are correct. It never ceases to amaze me how the Republicans lose the PR war time and time again.

The appropriate comment from the opposition before the speech is to say, “We look forward to hearing the President’s program and only wish it hadn’t taken so long for him to bring it forward.”

Once the speech is Boehner should say, “As soon as the President submits the specifics of his plan in writing we will expedite it through the legislative calendar. In addition we will post it on the internet so the American people can read it and comment.” This will force Obama to either put up or shut up, ending his current practice of running around the country talking about how the Republicans are blocking “his plan” when he has never presented anything concrete. If he doesn’t send the Congress a plan but then criticizes the Republicans for not passing it, Boehner can call him on his bluff and go to the press saying, “We are still waiting for it and will post it on the internet for the people to see as soon as we receive it.”

Finally, if he does present something, hold hearings in which the most ridiculous and onerous pieces are highlighted. Coordinate the opposition message with every Republican on the same talking points and talk radio amplifying the message. The current practice of every Republican representative mouthing off with different negative messages, as Sessions did today, serves only to reinforce the perception independents have that the Republicans are just naysayers without any ideas.

Once the hearings are done fix the bill and pass it. The President can either scream that his bill was rewritten or take credit for it. If he takes credit for it the Republicans can take the high ground of saying they were pleased to work with the President in a bipartisan way to bring jobs to America.

The American people are tired of the negative atmosphere in Washington. By playing the PR game effectively the Republicans can help the economy and get credit for changing the Washington game. They give the appearance of being partisan and unreasonable when they attack the President’s “plan” before he has even made his speech.

Looks to me like bait and switch... or a shell game..
However it usually works on republicans.. (some of them)..
