Senate sinks debt-ceiling disapproval bill

In a 45 to 52 vote on Thursday night, the Senate failed to advance a resolution that would have disapproved of a pending $500 billion increase in the nation's debt ceiling.

Under the debt-ceiling agreement reached in early August, the Obama administration was authorized to immediately raise the debt ceiling by $400 billion. Another $500 billion increase was authorized this month, although that could have been blocked if both the House and Senate approved resolutions expressing disapproval.

Earlier in the day Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) threatened to hold the Senate open for up to ten hours on Friday to "dispose" of the resolution if it moved forward.

The Senate resolution, S.J.Res. 25, was introduced by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and had 24 cosponsors.

In case you were wondering, without the increase the debt ceiling would have been breached on Monday - http://www.zerohedge.com/news/here-we-go-again-us-breach-transitory-debt-ceiling-monday. With the increase the debt limit is now $15.2 trillion, which is greater than the US GDP.

Will there be a nation to save by 2012? It’s not just a President that needs replaced.

Why do we even have a debt ceiling?

Unless there is a true Tea Party Revolution, we won’t make it to 2020.

I don’t think we’ll make it to 2016 the rate we’re going.

If we don’t correct things in 2012, we won’t make it to 2016.

Should be “you just borrowed 3 more months from the future; From the children”.

We have our speaker of the house along with a bunch of others to thank for this. This is the tricky gimmick they came up with. As if there was ever any question as to the end result.

IMHO, if Obama wins (pray to God, no), then 2012 will be the election of 1852. You can look it up on Wikipedia, but basically in 1852 the Democratic-Republicans won, and the Whigs fell apart as a viable party. The Dems and Repubs split into the two parties we have today. The next election in 1856, the Democrats won, but then in 1860 the Republicans won with Abe Lincoln. And we all know what happened then...

If Obama wins, the Republicans are finished. No one is going to support the spineless wonders any longer, and likely the Tea party will form a new party with some disaffected Democrats. The new party would likely lose in 2016 because it takes a while to get your act together, especially from a true grassroots movement. But then by 2020, they will a force to be reckoned with. And the Progressive Dems will freak out and riot.

Oddly, the issues in 1852 were similar to issues we face today: slavery and immigration.

about $5T doesn’t count as it’s in the SS “lock box” and does not affect the free market.

Remember folks, “our” Republicans voted for this process to raise the debt ceiling.

$10T down only another $4T left to go.

At the present rate of debt addition and the stagnation of the economy, I’m not sure if there will be a country. The next president and Senate could be facing a privately held debt of $13T and a $14T economy. Many/most nations are forced to erase their books and start over at that point. I don’t think our fifty states will hold together. I certainly don’t want to be saddled with CA and NY, if we start over.

Exactly. They can now say “I tried to stop them. I voted against raising the debt ceiling every time it came up.” A lot of people will buy it.
