Skip to comments.PBS's Tavis Smiley and Guest: Republicans Don't Want to Help Jobless

A taxpayer who doesnt favor Barack Obama might not mind subsidizing a show where hes attacked as unserious about the countrys problems. But with PBS talk-show host Tavis Smiley, its been a relentless attack on Obama from the left. Everything hes done isnt half-socialist enough.
On Wednesday, Smiley welcomed fellow leftist and former New York Times columnist Bob Herbert to his show to denounce Republicans for keeping Obama from passing a woefully insufficient second stimulus attempt. Herbert thinks Obama's new spending proposal is about one-tenth of what's needed. We need a four-trillion-dollar plan.
SMILEY: To your point now, then, whose fault is it? If the president can't put something forth that you believe Republicans will support, is it the president's fault, is it the Republicans' fault that we don't have a serious jobs bill in this country that can put Americans back to work?
HERBERT: I'm starting to feel like I guess the majority of the public feels. You look at the leadership in Washington and it becomes a pox on both their houses. The Republicans have undoubtedly been obstructionists from the very beginning. We've been in this terrible economic crisis for a long time now and they have thwarted every effort by the administration to do anything substantial.
SMILEY: Speaking of Republicans, what do you make of these growing numbers, at this hour, at least, growing numbers, it would appear to me, of Republicans, some of them well known, some with major committee assignments, saying publicly that they will not attend the presidents jobs speech. What do you make of that?
HERBERT: Well, the political back-and-forth in Washington has gotten to absurd levels. I think it is highly disrespectful not to attend a joint session of Congress thats being addressed by the president.

my only exposure to tavis smiley was watching him give sage nods to the-man-formerly-known-as-Prince as said man was waxing insanely on about “the contrails” over black neigborhoods...
Hey Tavis, obama had three years, a trillion dollars and control of the House and Senate and he still couldn’t do it. So take your B.S. and shove it.
Unemployment, homeless, dirty water, dirty air, defective cars, appliances, toys, dog and cat food, no medicines, no medical treatment, forcible smoking, sex without birth control, no porno - it's awful!!!
No bread, "Let them eat cake!"
Being a conservative sure is funnnnnnnnnnnnn!
Like most of those who voted for Obama, Tavis Smiley is a racist.
[There seems nothing is too undignified, shameless, too blatantly convoluted, too steeped in the practices of unmitigated demagoguery for the left-wing, liberal mindset to espouse. ]
We are racist, Hobbit teabagger terrorists who are against jobs and should be taken out.
Wait till they get to the part where we eat our children.
I guess by “help”, the left means some makework government job or an extension of an unemployment check.
They in no way mean to or intend to make it easier for the private sector to “help” by providing jobs.
They accuse republicans of liking money too much but don’t want to help the unemployed? Their lack of understanding of the connection between jobs and money is astonishing.
You missed a couple there.
We are now Teabagging, Terrorist, Barbarian, Hobbit sons-of-bitches.
Not that the Democrats and RINO's believe in labeling people you see.
Having to wear elephant patches on our clothes is probably next.
“I think it is highly disrespectful not to attend a joint session of Congress thats being addressed by the president.”
It would be, if the president waited to address joint sessions of Congress when he had something important to say. But if he’s gonna tell them something he could just as easily have announced from the White House, or better yet a stump speech, no one need waste their time listening in person.
I’d like Tavis Smiley to BE jobless. Does that count?
Time for Tavis to put some redistributive change into his life. Give them the wealth, Tavis! Give them the wealth!
Actually, many republicans want to help PBS and NPR become jobless.
Obama and the Democrats are doing everything that they can to hold back, control, hamper, regulate and take from businesses and those who start, own and run them. They are doing everything possible to destroy the economy. Then they scream JOBS, JOBS, JOBS. Go figure.
This post reminds me - I have to stop by the market and pick up some dog food for granny!
Thanks for the great link!
I’m sure there’s 10,000 Freepers who would love to meet this poodle bed-wetter in a dark alley, alone.
