The president of the Chicago Teachers Union says Mayor Rahm Emanuel exploded at her during a debate over a longer school day, pointing his finger in her face, yelling and cursing.
However, Lewis, the CTU and its parent union, the Illinois Federation of Teachers were conspicuously absent from Fridays event featuring key players in passing Illinois new school reform bill. All had been invited.
Duncan took the opportunity to tell a crowd of mostly officials and reporters that teachers have been beaten down too long and I think we need to double the salaries for teachers... Great teachers should make $130,000, $140,000, $150,000. They shouldnt have to wait to age 55 to make a good living. They shouldnt have to take a vow of poverty.
The teachers union on Thursday filed its first major legal salvo in the battle over a longer school day as Lewis charged that district brass and the mayor had declared war on the union through an illegal campaign to bypass it.

They are beginning to eat their own. No wonder Daley decided to quit, he knew what was on the way and decided to get while he still could.
Yep, that sounds like our little boy Rahm.
Forever cynical, I wonder if it’s all Kabuki theater. That there really isn’t a dime of difference between what Emanuel wants (still weirds me out that he’s actually da mare now) and what the teachers’ union wants.
He just won the election a year ago so he could do anything he wants, and no one will remember it. Just for show...Dems and unions go hand in hand. A week from now, both these clowns will be ass-kissing each other.
Cool. She’s PROBABLY a Dem too..
I have been a part-time college instructor (i.e “adjunct faculty”) since the 80’s, all while holding a full-time job in the private sector. There is more wasted money in education than anywhere else. If you are incompetent, the absolute safest career choice is education.
Chicago’s finances are in terrible shape....but I suspect that Ram had no idea JUST HOW BAD until he took office...you can’t really think that Daley told him the truth..
“Great teachers should make $130,000, $140,000, $150,000”.
I have long suspected the goal of teachers was to push their earnings up to the level of doctors and lawyers.
. . . . combat pay.
Thousands of teaching positions would be unfilled in Chicago and class sizes would be 100+ due to the shortage.
LOL. I love hearing stories like these. Hussein’s cult is so disfunctional, they all are seething with ego problems.
We have our own share of arguments on the conservative side, but I’d like to see a little more of the 1980s Demon-rat party (when I was one of them), fighting among each other all the time.
Rahm sure seems to have a bad temper, and throw temper tantrums a lot.
And he sends dead fish to people he doesn’t like.
He sent the dead fish when he was well into adulthood and working in the Clinton White House, if I recall correctly. It was NOT a youthful prank.
I can’t believe that somebody hasn’t kicked the crap out of that little ballet dancer yet!
Duncan is an advocate of merit pay and so called objective teacher evaluation. The CTA is an advocate of pro forma evals and salary schedule compensation based on years and credits. Most free marketers fall in line with Duncan’s approach. When he says great teachers, he means about 10% at that levelof pay The AFT and NEA despite the sideshow in Wisconsin are really on a collision course with Obama and Duncan and Gates and Buffet. All of whom want to fundamentally transform teacher employment and pay.
If somebody wants to talk about "should" then why stop there. Why not $300,000? Why not a million. Why not drop context and evade reality. Who cares about the size of the demand for labor for teachers and the existence of competition.
They shouldnt have to take a vow of poverty.
Maybe the unions do have to but the communists in power sure want the American to take the vow!
And I think keeping kids off the streets longer is exactly what is the purpose of a longer school day and year. My son attends a CPS grade school. He has had good teachers and poor teachers. Last year's teacher was OK. If the CPS were serious about increasing the quality and quantity of education, they would first take a long and hard look at how much time is wasted during a school year. Lots of days off for teacher's institutes. A day off whenever report cards are issued. The most glaring waste last year was when the last three weeks of school were spent doing nothing that had anything to do with education. Textbooks were turned in. There was little classroom instruction, no homework. The kids watched movies, played games, etc.
Great teachers should make $130,000, $140,000, $150,000.
......and as soon as we get some great teachers....
