The Next 9/11 — A Nuclear One?
IBD Editorials ^ | September 9, 2011 | Staff

Posted on 09/09/2011 5:22:26 PM PDT by Kaslin

National Security: The Sept. 11 commission stated that our biggest failure was one of imagination. Imagine an Iranian nuclear device detonating high over the American heartland. They're working on it.

On the same day the 9/11 Commission issued its report, another commission issued a report on a threat that could change our world and way of life in ways we can scarcely imagine. It is a real and credible threat, and it is largely being ignored.

The threat is a phenomenon known as electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, and demonstrates why the issue of homeland security extends beyond the need for body scanners or taking our shoes off at the airport. It's why ignoring Iran is dangerous and why a robust national missile defense should be of the highest priority.

This threat to our national security was the subject of study by the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack, established by unanimous consent of the House and Senate. Released on the same day as the 9/11 Commission report, few paid attention.

It is a scenario worthy of Hollywood, but it is a frighteningly real possibility. A solitary ballistic missile, perhaps an ICBM launched by a decaying North Korean regime or an Iranian mullah, or a terrorist Scud launched from a ship off the Atlantic Coast carrying the first Islamic nuke, detonates its warhead 25 to 300 miles above the U.S. mainland.

Nobody is harmed or killed immediately by the blast. But life in America, the world's only superpower and largest economy, comes to a screeching halt as a country dependent on 21st-century technology regresses almost a century instantaneously.

Three H-bombs. Fission bombs won't have the boost.

Where you think they would target?

But would Obama have the guts to pull the nuke trigger on fellow muslims?
1 EMP bomb would send a lot of people back to the stone age. And nobody would have a idea what the hell happened.

Don’t need the h-bomb, its not the explosion you need but the burst of energy. I’ve read some sources which indicate relatively small bombs would be adequate if detonated high enough. As you go higher the line of sight extends. The pulse will go out 3000-4000 miles. There are also ways of engineering the weapons to produce a larger pulse.

Most electronics today are extremely susceptible to EMP. I used to doubt this was really a threat so I researched it fairly extensively.

Here is a sobering report - http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/rp/factsheets/factsheets-htm/fs41elecpuls.htm

“A 1.4 Megaton bomb launched about 250 miles above Kansas would destroy most of the electronics that were not protected in the entire Continental United States. “

In the book “Lights Out”, a Saudi king uses one of his super tankers, fills it with sand so it appears it is full of crude oil heading to the US for a scheduled delivery. He has two scuds on board. When the tanker gets off the coast of the US, they erect the missles launchers and send off 2 scuds to be detonated 300 miles above the US to set a major EMP in motion. The tanker is scuddled (sank) by the crew shortly after. If that played out..even if our subs counter-attacked, what good would it do us ? And without proof of the tanker, who would we go after? Instant 1800s. But that could never happen to us, could it ? Sheriff Joe Biden or maybe FEMA would take care of us...LOL. It’s going to take a good 15 years to replace the World Trade Centers. What would it take to correct a national disaster?

Follow the rocket course! Follow the ship! We can and do do both!

Uh, huh.

Why do you think they would send a fleet?

It would only 1 missle.

It would be launched from a single small freighter or fishing boat 200 miles out to sea from the east coast.

Then BAM, instant stone age!

If Iran wants to destroy the U.S., not merely cripple it, it would need several hundred bombs and launchers.

No, ONE EMP device would do it quite efficiently.

Where you think they would target?

Equally spaced, 100,000- 200,000 feet above North America.

I have to agree with you about our dependency. Meanwhile, even the sun could put out a solar flare and get us whacked out for awhile. There is something to be said for at least having stuff that works without the new technology.

Launched???... don’t you mean detonated?

That was a quote from a Washington State report. I would assume they mean detonated.

Its an acceptable tradeoff for their leaders.

Unlike other nuclear powers, the mullahs want to be incinerated if it means their “12th imam” crawls out of the well.
Even the Soviet Union was never that nuts. Castro and Guevara wanted to commandeer the missiles in Cuba, and that scared the crap out of Khruschev - the real reasonthe missiles were pulled out. Maybe the Chinese would be crazy enough, calling the loss of a few hundred million of their own population acceptable (a thought publically express by one of their generals BTW). That could be overridden.
But still that leaves the mad mullahs (maybe with the civilians looking to send them to Evin Prison), or Lil Kim gets depressed and ronery.

Read the book “One Second After” — a novel. Not the greatest writing in the world, but a very compelling book.

Agreed, I'm reading it now.

A post-apocalyptic EMP America was the premise of “Dark Angel”.
It brought us the very shapely Jessica Alba.

I always try to look on the bright side.

Yes. It bothers me that everyone is talking about our military capabilities as if they’ve forgotten that ten years ago, a bunch of goons with box-cutters took out the WTC. What we have to keep in mind is their ability to sneak in under our guard and strike from within in ways that are so primitive it wouldn’t occur to us.
