Bachmann prepping to swing at Perry (Mitt must be onboard)
Politico ^ | September 11, 2011 | By MAGGIE HABERMAN

Byron York telegraphs the lines of attack Michele Bachmann is planning on using at tomorrow night's Florida debate to chip away at the support Rick Perry has taken from her:

"Bernie Madoff deals with Ponzi schemes, not the grandparents of America," says a Bachmann adviser. "Clearly she feels differently about the value of Social Security than Gov. Perry does. She believes Social Security needs to be saved, that it's an important safety net for Americans who have paid into it all their lives."

York goes on the say Bachmann's camp was unhappy with how few questions she got at last week's Reagan Library debate, and quotes the Bachmann adviser saying she will make clear she disagrees with Perry on Social Security if asked:

"Certainly not," the adviser says. "She strongly disagrees with his position on that, and it's clearly not something that's going to sit well with the people of Florida and Iowa and South Carolina and many of the early states, where there is a large population of seniors who rely heavily on Social Security. For [Perry] to scare them is wrong."

I think Perry was not shooting from the hip so much as making a calculation based on his belief that people may be ready to address this third rail of American politics. It’s a tricky move but he may be betting on a wider tea party climate where people want leadership, not scare tactics. My guess is he will come out on top in this issue. But it’s only a guess.

I don’t care if she attacks Perry, but if he approach is to perpetuate the Social Security lie by trying to pander to greedy geezers, I’m done with her.

I am not worried about me. It is the electorate that he has to worry about.

People who don’t pay attention to things as much as we do.

The next day, the media already started on him by declaring he wants to put old folks on the street.

I am sorry, he should work some on his delivery. It was his first debate, maybe he will improve.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Roll out the Perry propaganda and pass the Kool Aid. Perry is real strong on illegal immigration and border security. He makes Bush43 look like Sheriff Joe.

2:10 mark starts the SS talk—

Perry: We’re going to change this program and people who are SS today, men and women who are receiving those benefits today are in line to get them, don’t need to worry about anything.

I think republican candidates are talking about ways to transition this program and it is a monstrous lie, it is a pozi scheme to tell our kids that are 25 or 30 years old today that’s paying into this, that you’re paying for a program that’s going to be there, anybody that’s for the status quo with SS today is involved with a monstrous lie to our kids and it’s not right.

"Well, there's no need to frighten or throw under the bus our esteemed elders who have paid all of their working lives into the Social Security system." She went on to say that she understood what he was saying but it was a poorly worded comment.

-Sarah Palin.

Perry made a major gaffe that won't soon be forgotten by the elderly. He needs to correct it and move on.

MB has been Romneycare’s stalking horse from Day-1.

RomneyCare attacking Perry in FL on the SS issue.

Good to see both (perry/Romney) attacking each other as it makes it easier for Sarah when she enters and both RINOs have been vetted.

I just think its kind of pathetic that they promote this Bachmann/Romney rumor while keeping quiet about the actual ties between the Perry and Romney team.

Really? How about Mary Matlin and James Carville? You can't get there from here.

Well, you know, it is all about you know what two. LOL

I asked the other day for some proof about a Bachmann Romney link, but as usual. It never appears.

Everyone is after Michele, even though they have declared her as good as gone. One would think she would be left alone to wither away.

Odd, isn’t it?

Rick Perry, patron saint of open borders

Rick Perry has time and time again requested from Washington DC 1000 troops to SECURE (not "open") the border between Mexico and Texas.

Obama = Washington DC (not a state governor)

I am much more concerned with Rick Perry, patron saint of open borders and illegal immigration, than anything he said about Social Security.

Perry calls it (SS) what it is. Bachmann is not facing reality on this (SS) issue.

What is Perry's official/actual stance regarding borders and illegal immigration? I keep reading different takes of it here on FR. Just curious what his actual stance is, if anyone has that info.

>> The RINOS are equally yoked and running together, mark my words.

I believe you, and I have to admit I *never* thought I’d see Bachmann pulling hard in that RINO yoke right there beside Romney. Quite a shocker!

You know I’m 100% behind Gov. Palin. But if I have to choose another candidate, it won’t be Milt or a House member with no executive experience. Take that for what it’s worth.

Do you think the msm will allow any GOP candidate breathing space and fair reporting when they go up against Obama on social security? No. They won't.

So we need to fight this out now in the primary or it just stays this way and taxes go up. If Perry wins -- he can wipe the floor even cleaner and toss out more Democrats with his coattails.

What I don't get is Perry is getting trashed for calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme, the counter argument to Perry is "millions of people depend on Social Security". with the implication "....so therefore it can't be a Ponzi scheme."

The point is the system can still be a Ponzi scheme even though millions of people depend on it. IMHO that makes it much worse, you have millions depending on a Ponzi scheme.
I have my questions about Perry, but on this issue he's spot on. So what am I missing here?

If this report is accurate, Bachmann will be making a very big mistake. First, Perry said those now receiving SS will not be affected. Secondly, IIRC, Perry did not say he wants to get rid of SS but he's acknowledging the absolute necessity of reforming it if the younger generation is to receive anything.

I really do not think Bachmann is this stupid.
