In flier, Romney hits Perry on Social Security ('How can you trust someone who wants to kill it?')
Tampa Bay Online ^ | 09/11/2011 | William Marc

Posted on 09/11/2011 12:18:07 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Mitt Romney didn’t wait long to begin his attack on Rick Perry over Social Security—his campaign is doing door-to-door distribution of a flier attacking Perry on the issue.

The flier, which a campagn spokesman said is being left at the doors of Florida GOP primary voters, portrays the GOP primary as a two-candidate race—“Two candidates. Only one will protect what’s important to you,” is the headline.

Of those two, it says, Perry is “reckless and wrong on Social Security.” The bold-face tagline: “Rick Perry: How can we trust anyone who wants to kill Social Security?” Romney, it says, favors “entitlement reform,” but “wants to save Social Security.”

Perry has not directly advocated abolishing Social Security, although he has called it a “Ponzi scheme” and questioned whether it’s constitutional. In last week’s candidates debate at the Reagan Library debate, the two clashed on the issue, and Romney accused Perry of being “committed to abolishing Social Security. But during the debate, Perry promised emphatically that he wouldn’t do anything to affect the benefits of current retirees or those nearing retirement.

Romney isn’t paying attention to the nuances, however. In the nation’s biggest swing state, which happens to have the second-largest population of 65-plus residents, he clearly hopes to put Perry’s views into question.

Romney’s move makes it virtually certain his clash with Perry in the Reagan Library debate will be repeated Monday in the Tampa debate sponsored by CNN and the Tea Party Express.

Not a Perry fan, however, he better have some plan ready to talk about tomorrow at the debate if he wants this to go away.

Romney now supports what he has in the past called a Criminal Conspiracy. That flannel suit, wind bag, could debate himself every day just based on the various sides he has taken on every issue.

Perry’s problem is not the diagnosis of the problem. His problem is as of this time, he does not propose a solution to a problem he recognizes.

He will continue to be vulnerable as long as he continues to repeat the words ‘Ponzi Scheme’ without telling us how he plans to solve the problem.

How about looking at Herman Cain’s idea of looking at the Chilean Model?

And, herein, is (IMO) Romney’s downfall as a potential GOP candidate. He wants to save the SS “Ponzi” scheme for future generations.

I say let it die. Kill it now. It was NEVER about establishing a government run retirement plan, it was always about taking people’s hard-earned money to squander now in hopes that Congress could figure out a way to pay it back later.

The chickens are coming home to roost on this issue and Congress is so shaken by what they have done, they can’t figure out which way to run.

Here are some questions you should be asking your favorite Congresscritter: If SS is such a great plan, why did the Congress opt out of it and establish a separate retirement plan that taxpayers fund?

And, if the Congress doesn’t belong to SS, why are they making ANY decisions about it and/or the future of SS?

Inquiring minds, my FRiends, inquiring minds . . . . .

Yes, Cain is the man with the plan. But we are supposed to be sophisticated enough to know that president’s don’t come with plans. Plans will be tossed out and revised by congress. What is important are the ideas and the ability to get things passed.

“It is a bad plan that admits of no modification”

Anyone not sophisticated enough to understand this probably won’t read the plan anyway.

Romney is a flip flopping scum who will say anything to get elected. We know that.

Perry’s mistake is not reminding everyone what he actually said. Perry said its a Ponzi scheme for young workers. And that if anyone promises them they will get benefits the way the program is going, its a monstrous lie. What is so wrong with that? Nothing. Perry has made very clear he isn’t going to slash current beneficiaries’ benefits. So Perry is attempting to have an adult conversation and the media and Romney take it and run with it to make it look like Perry is going to destroy current Social Security.

He doesn't want this to "go away." Why does everyone think this was some kind of accident? He published it in a BOOK just a year ago and discovered the country was READY. Perry is what everyone is talking about BECAUSE of what he's saying. He's getting more press and more airtime than anyone else, and he is running on Reagan's own ideas. If ever there was an opportunity to undo the damage of FDR, if ever Socialism was proven an unmitigated failure, it is now. Obama has inadvertently blown apart the wall and the "third rail" with it. This is our opportunity to set things to right and Perry is no coward. He has months and months to get his policies out there. He's just now in the midst of his meet-and-greet.

I do look forward to hearing all his plans, but it is premature for him to be discussing the finer details of all his policies at this time...especially since he is benefitting from the buzz. The sooner Romney and Bachmann take his bait, the sooner it's a one-man Perry primary.

I will start this by saying that I am not a Perry supporter in that I have been a regular contributor to SarahPAC from its inception. As it stands right now, she is not in so I have to look at the current choices in the light that I must objectively watch the game and to educate myself on each of the announced candidates.

Either I saw a different debate or some here are totally missing what I heard him specifically describe by saying seniors and soon to be recipents will not be cut out of what they have been promised all of their working lives. He was very specific that the young workers of this country would be those who would lose in the current Ponzi scheme.

So why not everyone here at least be honest when debating the issues so we all do not become losers because of it? There is a long time until the primaries begin so how about noting the facts instead of making them up, or worse, leaving them out because you have already placed your stake in the ground. We will all be richer by doing so and end up with the best candidate possible to rallye behind when we oust the Poser.

Now, for Mitt and reportedly Michelle laying plans to label him a SS killer and throwing seniors out of their homes crap we hear constantly from the Democrats. Supporters for either should be ashamed they are taking that “win at any costs” attitude that has laid politics in the public relations mess it is mierd in today.

Assets grew from about $47 billion at the end of December 1986 to about $2.6 trillion by the end of December 2010. The assets of the Trust are invested in US Bonds , backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government by law. The SS Trust fund is the largest holder of US debt. Social Security will not be bankrupt unless the US defaults on that debt.

The Social Security trust fund holds $2.7 trillion dollars of government bonds. Is the USA going to default on those bonds? Incidentally, at present China owns only $1.2 trillion.

More than half of Americans, 56 percent, would be less likely to vote for a presidential candidate who favored phasing out Social Security so that workers could invest their payroll taxes in the stock market, according to a nationwide poll in June by The Wall Street Journal and NBC News. That included 64 percent of Democrats and 57 percent of independents, whose swing votes decide elections, and even a 45 percent plurality of Republicans. Only one-third of Republicans said they would be more likely to vote for someone who espoused ending Social Security.

I could care less what the literal name/address of where you teach. I just wanted a ballpark figure what parents are getting charged to have their children manipulated.

Some people think SS is “broke” because its funds are held in Treasury bonds. In other words, the surplus of what workers have paid in is all lent to the government. Who knew? While banks sold bad mortgages and brokers sold bad stocks, US workers were investing their pensions in this patriotic way all along. They were nobly, or naively, willing to believe that the Treasury will pay them back. Will it? I suppose it must, or else the “full faith and credit” of the US will be worthless and the country will go bankrupt.

If you kill SS, you have to compensate those who have paid into it all their lives.

Yep, I'm one of the suckers who have had to put money in this blackhole all of my life.

But, what's the alternative? Congress has spent the system broke and lawyers have gotten people who have barely paid anything into it on a lifetime disability pension for crapola medical conditions that are correctable. Killing it or letting it go broke, somebody's gonna get hurt. Propping it up and trying to salvage it, somebody's gonna get hurt.

So, the question becomes - When do we decide who's gonna get hurt? Do we start the pain now, or hold off another 20 years and start the pain then? Do our Congresscritters get tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail now, or later?

Most of us who have paid into the system have little or no expectation of getting anything approaching the amount of money confiscated from us all our lives back. Why should younger generations have to pay MY way as an old fart because the Congress spent the money and have NOTHING to show for it??

Salvaging this worthless system is just window dressing - it only puts a new dress on the same old ugly pig!! I say kill it!

Full-time, in-state tuition at the University of Texas is between $4,673 and $5,369 per semester, depending on degree. You can look that up as easily as I just did.

http://www.utexas.edu/tuition/costs.html

I went into teaching late, after believing our kids were, in fact, being manipulated through higher education, and particularly through our history departments. I love our history and was sickened by its use in teaching anti-Americanism to our kids. I was the "older student" in my graduate classes, and the one that just didn't quite "get it." But it was worth it, and I am very proud of what I do. I now teach American Exceptionalism and respect for our country's history, and our intentions. I also participate in Campus Crusade for Christ, and my door is always open to my students who just need to talk. I am "out there" among my peers, many of whom post stickers of Obama or "No Human is Illegal" or Che Guevara or worse on their office doors. I have a framed picture of Reagan in mine, along with my framed certificates from the Daughter's of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. For the most part my colleagues are respectuful of me, personally, but I am considered the conservative loon in the department, a necessary evil. Don't talk to me about what parents are getting charged to have "me" manipulate their children. You are way off base. And I make no apologies to you or anyone else for not wanting to divulge too much personal information about myself on this public forum. If you don't want to put stock in what I post because I haven't provided sufficient personal information, feel free to disregard. I'll get over it.

I do NOT live in Texas. I have paid for in full tuition for two children to attend 1. a university in Missouri and a university in South Carolina.

One child is now in law school paying for that tuition on their own. The other child is nearing a Ph.D in electrical engineering at their cost.

MY question had nothing to do with your location.
