Bill Clinton, Andrew Cuomo make robo-calls for Dem. trailing in NY special election

Former President Bill Clinton and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo are throwing their weight behind Democrat David Weprin in New York’s 9th Congressional district, recording robo-calls that will run Monday and Tuesday.

Both calls emphasize the New York Times’ Weprin endorsement, his support of the middle class and Medicare, and say that he will create jobs.

“I’ve known David for many years, and I’ve known him to be a leader who stands up for what’s right. In Congress he’ll stand up for middle class families and he’ll fight to preserve Social Security and Medicare. David will bring jobs to New York and get our economy moving. That’s why he’s also been endorsed by the New York Times,” says Cuomo, in a call that voters will receive on Monday.

Cuomo is an incredibly popular governor in the district, with a 59 percent approval rating and just 16 percent of residents disapproving.

“The New York Times endorsed David. They support him for the same reasons I do: because he’ll stand up for the middle class, he’ll support a good program to put Americans back to work, and he’ll oppose the Tea Party plan to destroy Medicare,” says Clinton, in a call that will run on Tuesday.

The special election will take place on Tuesday, and after taking a day off from the campaign on Sunday to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, both sides are back into full gear to mobilize voters.

Weprin’s opponent, Bob Turner, is running robo-calls from former Mayor Rudy Giuliani as well as Donald Trump. Weprin has launched a large Get-Out-The-Vote effort on all fronts — door knocking, radio, internet, television, and mail.

The two candidates are competing to replace the Democratic former congressman Anthony Weiner, who resigned in June on the heels of a scandal related to his lewd behavior on Twitter.

you wouldn't believe the ads on WCBS! "Tea Party Extremist wants to cut benefits..." -- complete with a garbled, unintelligible audio clip of the opponent allegedly saying so. So cuomo.
