Perry repeatedly found himself in the crosshairs, as the field of candidates took turns attacking his positions on illegal immigration, Social Security, and his controversial 2007 push to vaccinate Texas schoolgirls against human papillomavirus, a common sexually transmitted that can lead to cervical cancer. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, whose standing among Republicans has slipped dramatically since Perry entered the race, said she was "offended" by Perry's executive order, which included an opt-out provision for parents who did not want the vaccine.

That disqualifies him? He said he should have deferred to the legislature.
There was still and opt-out for the vaccine.
People are making mountains out of Gardasholes.
No doubt. This issue has dominated the site tonight to the detriment of eveything else, like, remember the economy?
This was nothing compared to Hunstman calling Santorum a traitor for saying the border wasnt secure.
The Perry bashing is prolific. I’m not buying it.
The program had an opt out.
Michelle Bachman attack back fired on her.
She made herself look petty and misinformed and oddly mean.
I will not donate to her anymore.
the vaccine has a higher death rate than the cancer
this was about money
Bachmann is really getting witchy and way too overly full of herself.
I don’t get it either. The vaccine does work, kids have to be vaccinated now (it was a lot worse when I was a kid), and there was to be an opt out.
Rick always seems nervous and unsure when he answers a question. I wish he was more “certain” of himself, more assertive and had more fire in his belly. He makes a great speech but he folds like a cheap suit in the Debates. Just damn!!!!
***Perry repeatedly found himself in the crosshairs,...***
I thought using the word ‘crosshairs’ automatically gets you law enforcement at your door and your way of life ruined.
Or is that only for Sarah Palin?
Still I want no one as President who even thinks that with an opt out that such an Executive was a good idea no matter how good his intent was. What other Executive Orders is he willing to issue for the ‘Good of the People’? We are electing a President not a Ruler.
Do you have a link or something to support the “death rate..”?
At least there was an opt-out provision for the Guardisil. All other vaccines are mandatory.
What don’t you understand.
He was told it was a Cancer preventer. His mistake was not checking with Abbott to find out if he Constitutionally COULD sign such an order.
I have no doubt that Merck was putting huge pressure on him. Do you want women to die from Cervical Cancer when WE have A PREVENTION MED?
Merck would like to have a State take the heat for it’s drugs.
VIOXX remember was a Merck Drug. At least Perry CARES about LIFE.
The Perry haters are hoping it’s blood they smell and not their own stinky arses. It’ll pass. The whole Gardasil issue was a very complicated one. It’s difficult for Perry to defend because it’s complicated, and it’ll be a difficult sell by Bachmann to mislead people on it...especially when the issues are the economy.
There have been numerous threads on FR about it. Sorry I’m late for bed and don’t have time to look it up right now.
I thought it was Huntsman calling Perry guilty of treason for saying we should have a whole border fence.
So you are for discontinuong all the vaccinations that children have to get before they can attend school?
this vaccine was a federal program with tons of oversight and was more than likely a loss for the drug company.
non one makes money on a federal vaccine program.
WHAT?! Oh, you LIE!!! Evidence please!!!!
she’s just getting desperate. She’ll never get her campaign debt paid off and will certainly never be the nominee.
The weesil went to bed on his lie. What a coward.
- You can't build a wall/fence from Texas to California. (The 15th century Ming Dynasty didn't get that memo!)
- Texas doesn't deny in-state tuition based on how your last name sounds. (Ah, so that's how they award tuition scholarships in Texas... based on how yer last name sounds, pard'ner!)
- It was either in-state tuition for those student or putting them on the Dole. (What kind of an either/or choice is that, as if notifying ICE was not an option?)
‘non one makes money on a federal vaccine program.”
Shows just how stupid you are. The companies lobbying for the program just happened to make it. They make $360 for each dose.
shazaaam
screw you
Its been well documented. Do your own damn research.
Medicine should be between you and you doctor. The only exception is communicably diseases which are a danger to the public. I don’t want the government telling me or mine what care we can, can’t or must have. Maybe you want Obama/Romney care, but I don’t.
What does it matter if there’s an opt out for the vaccine? So next year they rescind the opt out and we have govt controlling the sex lives of 12 year olds. It is wrong morally to impose it, period.
Also, the real travesty is Perry obviously spent very little time studying Gardisil, which is not a vaccine against cancer. Stop saying it prevents cancer like you’re a hero. Gardisal prevents the growth of a MINORITY of Human Papilloma Viruses (about 8 of over 30) that can cause CERVICAL Cancer, which is almost always detected by a yearly pap smear and removed by a cone biopsy. We are not talking cancer like chemo, radiation, etc, except it the most vastly rare cases. Yet the risks of the vaccine are greater than those probabilities.
I’m not saying some women don’t get cervical cancer and die from it, particularly if they do not have check-ups, but that it’s deceiving these women to tell them Gardisal will prevent it. It won’t.
All these federal programs have strange built in requirements.
This program was geared for the large Hispanic and Black demographics near the border areas.
The program had an opt out.
That’s lame. Those are vaccinations for diseases that are contagious! It’s a public safety issue in the schools to prevent virulent childhood diseases. Irrelevant comparison.
That’s a lie.
So who are you pretending to support now ???
If there is any blame it should be on Merck. No one was aware of the horrific side effects of this vaccine. My granddaughters pediatrician was adamant that they have the vaccine. It seemed a wonder drug... until the truth was revealed. Fortunately they did not suffer any of the side effects.
I don’t think this was about the money on Perry’s part. I don’t think he was trying to find a “way out”, I think he was trying to relay his motives. He has repeatedly said he was wrong.
Agreed, the state’s administration of Gardasil will not be an issue in the general election. Everyone is shooting at Perry as the front runner, which is fair game.
It’s a non issue for me. If I was a Texas resident I simply wouldn’t have allowed my children to take part and I would have been very vocal about it.
What a joke that so many are looking for the “perfect” GOP candidate. Not going to happen. Rick Perry is as close as it gets to a strong conservative candidate without tunnel vision. My Perry bumper sticker stays on my car.
He should issue whatever executive orders for the good of the people that he deems to be for the good of the people. Assuming they are legally within his power to do so.
so sorry you’re so stupid
Don’t hate perry, haven’t said anything about him here. He’s not perfect but then none of em are.
No, it wasn’t, not to Rick Perry. But it was to the liberals Women in Government who took a couple of $million dollars of Merck money to scare the pants off Texas parents and the many Texas parents were calling for the vaccination.
Here’s the deal about Gardasil and it needs to be put to rest:
In 2003 Rick Perry, four years before Gardasil was approved, signed a bill that for the first time in Texas history allowed parents to OPT OUT of ANY immunizations that parents deemed were dangerous to their children.
DO YOU GET THAT? ANY immunizations they deem dangerous to their children.
When Texas parents were yelling they wanted it and yelling they didn’t want it, the Texas legislature stalled.
In the meantime the feds said make it avaiable and make it paid for under SCHIP and Medicaid. In order to get it paid for it has to be a mandated immunization. So Perry just wrote an ExO that mandated it so the ones that wanted it could get it, and gave everybody else the opt out that hadn’t take taken THE ANY OPT OUT in 2003!
It’s that simple! And Perry should NEVER apologize for it.
Seems it is a communicable disease. In this society of promiscious Sex encourage by the STATE Perry was right.
save the O/R cracks.
“Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers that affect a woman’s reproductive organs. Various strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most cases of cervical cancer.
When exposed to HPV, a woman’s immune system typically prevents the virus from doing harm. In a small group of women, however, the virus survives for years before it eventually converts some cells on the surface of the cervix into cancer cells. Cervical cancer occurs most often in women over age 30.”
I agree the makers are the ones responsible. However, the govt people forcing it on everyone and the medical people pushing it are also to blame. Doctors get a lot of benefits from pushing drugs. Walk into a urologists office and the walls are papered with viagra ads.
Gosh knows I agree with you! I thought each of them had some terrific points and some real stinkers. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could take all the pluses, eliminate the negatives, roll them into 1 and have perfection. I thought all of them made for a fine selection of candidates. I was very proud to be a Republican tonight. I will vote for any one of them, because the worst of them would be lightyears ahead of BO.
Trafficant 2012
Not really a way to gain favor for your preferred candidate; attacking other candidates who’s supporters you will need later on down the road. Hmmm...maybe the tag line is a ruse... Just like saying you didn’t become a member until 2009 when a quick search of FR shows you first posted in September of 2008, just around the time Romney was making behind the scenes attacks on Palin. Curious...
I think that gardisil was invented to prevent a communicable disease that leads to cancer. It is a danger to the public that engage in unprotected sex with multiple partners.
It was a mistake to order the vaccine as though it were measles, but Perry has admitted that the decision should have gone to the legislature and the people.
He has said all along that it should be a state issue.
If this is the biggest thing that you have against Perry, then you should vote for him.
