Skip to comments.Obama: PA Statehood Bid a 'Distraction'

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday that the Palestinian Authority's bid for recognition at the United Nations is a "distraction" that will not result in viable statehood, AFP reported.
Obama, who spoke in a roundtable discussion with journalists, added, however, that Israel would "hurt itself" if it retaliated to any unilateral PA action by withdrawing resources that in any way harmed the PA's self-policing efforts.
Obama said the PA's tactics would not solve the problem of statehood, adding, "This issue is only going to be resolved by Israelis and Palestinians agreeing on something."
The president said that "what happens in New York City can occupy a lot of press attention but is not going to change actually what is happening on the ground until the Israelis and Palestinians sit down."
He added that he believed the most likely scenario is that the PA will seek to upgrade its representation from its current observer status to a non-member state in the United Nations General Assembly.
"We are only one vote in the General Assembly," Obama said. "Clearly there are a lot of countries ready to go with the Palestinians -- depending on the resolution."
He reiterated that the U.S. would veto the statehood bid at the UN Security Council when he said, "That's very different than going to the Security Council, and it's true that I have said very publicly that if this were to come to the Security Council we would object very strongly."

I only clicked on this thread because I assumed Obama did not know that Pennsylvania was one of the 58 states.
For some reason, I do not trust obamma, as far as Israel is concerned! The arabs are looking for a UN brokered war against Israel to get the land they want and more! God will protect Israel, no question about it!
Oh come on. Why cant they be a country if they want?
Somehow, in worrying about Israel, people forget that there are Christians in the West Bank, and Lebanon, all of whom are being oppressed by the Israeli state.
Odd, that Christians are sacrificed at the Israeli altar!
Actually, the Christians in Bethlehem and Beit Jallah are being oppressed by the Palestinian Authority. As for Christians in Lebanon, how can Israel oppress residents of territory which it doesn’t occupy?
They don’t want. This is all just posturing. Countries don’t simply come into being; they are built through hard work and dedication, neither of which are evident in the PA. They could have been a country 31 separate times since 1936, most recently in 2007. In stead, they preferred to make war on the Jooos! Furthermore, they already have two countries, one in Jordan where “Palestinians” are 70% of the population, and one in Ghaza, where they are 100%.
Never heard that! You sure about that?
Obama (or his advisors) may have just figured out what the biiiig problem with the Palestinians gaining statehood is.
“Something”? Like a seven-year peace plan?
...said on Monday that the [terrorists'] bid for recognition at the United Nations is a "distraction" that will not result in viable statehood... added, however, that Israel would "hurt itself" if it retaliated... by withdrawing resources that in any way harmed the [terrorists'] self-policing efforts... Count on it. And the supporting op-eds have already been written, and are just waiting for that day. There will be JINOs claiming that, though this seems at first like a disaster, it has been a huge relief and opened up a pathway to peace, blah blah blah, oh, and better give Zero another Nobel. And the Nobel Prize in Chemistry should be awarded to a PLO bombmaker...

I think statehood s a great idea. Give them gaza, move everyone from the WB there and then wall off the place and make it like the NK SK border. And to make it legit, move the UN there.
I was about to say the same thing.
In what way is it nonsense?
Are you denying the fact that there are Christians in Lebanon, Syria, and yes, even the West Bank?
Half the country of Lebanon is Christian. I dont see what is nonsense about that?!
Sir, I am not disagreeing with you.
But even the State Dept (for what that rotten institution is worth) has called out Israel for denying Palestinian and other middle eastern christians access to sites in the holy land.
Since I’ve been there twice I can tell you Israel stops no one from any Christian site. I’ve been to every one there is.
On the other hand try and go to Jericho and see who keeps you out. Anyone going to Bethlehem is nuts as far as I’m concerned, it’s not safe on that side.
There are thousands of Christians living in Israel along with now about 15,000 to 20,000 Messianic Jews and the government of Israel only asks they don’t run around trying to convert. The Jews are coming even with out that happening, I’ve been to their churches.
You did not merely state that there are Christians there, but that Israel is oppressing them. Which is not only a joke but a baldfaced lie. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that actually PROTECTS Christians.
