A complicated attack involving multiple gunmen and apparent suicide bombers was underway in the heart of the Afghan capital Tuesday morning, and it appeared to be focused near the U.S. Embassy.
CBS News staff in Kabul reported hearing heavy gunfire and at least seven explosions, some of them large. The situation was described as "chaotic", and it remained unclear how many people were wounded.
A Taliban spokesman claimed there were several militants inside at least one building near the embassy district in Kabul, and that the targets of the attack were Afghan government ministries and the intelligence services.
The Taliban's primary website ran a statement Tuesday morning saying "Operation Martyrdom" was underway in the Afghan capital.

This is why I believe the best thing we could have done was to send thousands of Afghans to study abroad (Europe) where they could learn to use computers and drive cars. (Girls educated in this way would never want to go back to wearing beekeeper outfits).
That was where our “allies” could have helped out—rather than by sending token troop forces.
It’s ten years too late to start that now; but you can imagine the results of educating ten years’ worth of
Afghan youth in the West.

9/11 anniversary: The end of Islamic extremism is far from nigh
It is often described as the day that changed the world but, in fact, 9/11 only brought home to the West what had been simmering, and sometimes breaking out violently, in different parts of the world for nearly half a century.
At the heart of extremism is an ideology, a world-view – and not just concerning the perceived wrong done to the Muslim Umma (or people). Such an ideology expects Islam to dominate rather than to accept a subservient place in world affairs. It promotes pan-Islam and the ultimate rejection of nation-states, even Muslim ones. It may be that some extremists chatter about an Islamic state, in this part of the world or that; however, its ultimate aim is a single Islamic political, social, economic and spiritual entity.
For many, the restoration of the Caliphate is integral to this project and, given past history, we should not be sanguine that Western powers will not collude with it if they believe it promotes a temporary self-interest. Such a vision of pan-Islam is not restricted to the Muslim world as it is now but also includes lands “lost” to Islam whether that be India, Palestine, East Timor, South Sudan or the Iberian countries.
Islam is not going to “collapse under its own weight”. They won’t change and they won’t give up. I doubt we can kill all muslims and I doubt we can change all their minds. I would settle for keeping them out of America and letting them kill each other in other countries.

There still would have been time, if Obama hadn’t completely ruined the ROE, turning our troops into sitting ducks. They might not like it, but those Afghan civilians have to pretend to like the stronger horse.

No. The Japanese were exquisitely cultured and genteel. They were our best friends in the region. They came under the spell of some slick-talking charlatans who convinced them it was a religious duty to conquer Asia. Admiral Raymond Spruance, as acting Military Governor of Japan, said that "there are enough brutes in any society, and enough of the brute in each of us" for events like what happened to take place.
Continued prayers for your husband and you. Looks like Embassy lockdown will continue for a while - everything canceled for tomorrow.

Prayers of Thanksgiving! I know, it’s just crazy how awesmoe technology is! Hubby doesn’t call me on the phone—we use Skype for everything. I bought a Droid for this deployment and I find it surreal that my husband can call me through my phone using Skype. He mentioned the lockdown to me as well. He told me not to expect to hear from him for a few days. How can I comlain about that when sometimes I hear from him two times a day? How did families ever get through wartime with out Skype?
