Plenty at Stake for Weprin, Democrats Today in NY-9
RealClearPolitics ^ | September 13, 2011 | Caitlin Huey-Burns

In a cramped office space that serves as Democrat David Weprin's congressional campaign headquarters -- nestled between a local grocery mart and a Sovereign Bank branch just off Queens Boulevard -- a handful of local politicians gathered for a press conference Monday before dispatching an "army" of volunteers into the field to convince voters that their absence at the polls in today's special election could cost Democrats a seat they have held for almost a century.

Seven-term Rep. Joe Crowley introduced Weprin (pictured at right) to the crowd, calling the state assemblyman from a prominent Queens political family a “vetted and proven” candidate to replace the disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned in mid June after sending lewd pictures of himself to women over the Internet. But it’s clear from this election eve push to get out the vote that Weprin, who is trailing his Republican rival, Bob Turner, in a pair of recent public opinion polls, has a lot to prove.

The special election in this state's 9th Congressional District, which comprises parts of Brooklyn and Queens, was supposed to be an easy win for Democrats. After all, prominent New York Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer and onetime vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro had held the seat long before Weiner took office in 1999. Democrats enjoy a near 3-to-1 registration advantage here and voters chose Barack Obama over John McCain in 2008 by 11 points.

If they lose this, be prepared for some NASTY desperation on the part of the left.

They saw their goals within reach with the election of 0bama, and accomplished quite a lot in establishing the end of capitalism and the beginning of communism,

but they woke up the sleeping giant of American individualism and desire for liberty, not servitude.

I am certain of one thing. If the GOP wins this, this election will characterized as a local fluke and not a national trend.

They keep saying that Ferraro used to hold this seat. At least when Eric Cantor claims that he holds the U.S. House seat once held by James Madison, he actually represents a substantial part of Madison’s old CD.

Listening to Levin on WABC last night, I was happy to hear on the local commercials that both Rudy Giuliani and Democrat Ed Koch strongly endorsed his Republican opponent. That’s a good sign.

I am praying that Mr. turner will win this race, but.....I do not trust the Democrat Party, and...believe they will do anything to win this race. This contest is critical path in nature for obvious reasons. POTUS Obama, who, for all his rants &raves is already a “lame duck” POTUS would immediately become a “permanent” lame duck POTUS for the remainder of his term!!! Below, some reasons for voters in NY-9 to vote against Obama and his Democrat Party!!
- Obama is anti-Israel.
- Obama has turned the entire Middle East & North Africa into a “Muslim Brotherhood” stronghold.
- Because of Obama, Egypt now sends terrorist Muslims into Israel to slaughter innocent Israeli settlers.
- African Muslim POTUS Obama remains silent as Black African Christians are jailed, tortured and murdered in Libya by “his” Muslim Brother hood brethren.
- There no “Arab Spring” just an Obama led campaign to bring down the state of Israel.
- Because of Obama actions, Israeli’s & Israel are in dangerous , harm’s way!!!
- Destroying the American economy.
- No job creation for three years.
- Worships at the altar of Rev. Jeremiah Wright & Louie Farrakhan, both avowed america haters.
- Insulted & demeaned the Prime Minister of Israel in the USA White House!!
- Set American Blacks into the worst economic stress possible.
- Obama is truly un-American and self-centered only on his personal survival.
- Iraq will fall into the hands of Iran very shortly.
- The uSa military will be weakened into a danger zone by Obama!!!

I could go on all day & night!!! Just some food for thought in case you have not pieced this Obama destruction of America at work!!! Vote to defeat Obama today in NY-9!!!

Who would vote for a guy named Weprin? That sounds like a third-rate headache medicine that would advertise on the NBC Nightly News.

I mentioned that Eric Cantor claims to represent James Madison’s old congressional district. When James Madison represented the VA-05 in the First Congress, it included the following counties:

* Culpepper (which back then included all of the current Culpepper, Madison and Rappahannock counties)

* Orange (which back then included all of the current Orange and Greene counties)

* Spotsylvania (which back then included the current Spotsylvania County plus the current city of Fredericksburg)

* Louisa

* Albemarle (which back then included the current Albemarle County plus the current city of Charlottesville)

* Fluvanna

* Goochland

* Amherst (which back then included all of the current Amherst and Nelson counties)

Cantor’s VA-07 includes all of the current Goochland, Louisa, Orange, Culpepper, Madison and Rappahannock counties, and like half of Spotsylvania County. It should be noted that James Madison’s Montpelier home was located in the current Orange County, which is in the VA-07. I think that Cantor has the best claim at representing James Madison’s old CD.

Robert Hurt of VA-05 has a lesser claim to being the descendant of Madison’s VA-05. Hurt’s VA-05 includes all of the current Greene, Albemarle and Nelson Counties, as well as the city of Charlottesville. Hurt’s VA-05 may actually have a bit more population within the confines of Madison’s VA-05 than does Cantor’s VA-07 (depending on how many people in the current Spotsylvania County live within VA-07), but the heart of Madison’s old CD lies within Cantor’s VA-07.

It would be quite a stretch, though, for Rob Wittman of VA-01 to claim that he represents Madison’s old CD, even though his Hampton Roads district does include half of Spotsylvania County and the entire city of Fredericksburg. And it would be risible for Bob Goodlatte of VA-06 to make such a claim, since the only part of Madison’s VA-05 that Goodlatte represents is the current Amherst County.

(See page 149 to see a map of Madison’s VA-05: http://books.google.com/books?id=JvmZbFMxCHsC&pg=PA146&lpg=PA146&dq=congressional+district+james+monroe+james+madison+first+congress&source=bl&ots=dIc2kuaBqW&sig=RJQNH96SNuZyGwEiuXJmEIktLgc&hl=en&ei=jMZRTc2LHIXGlQep64jiCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CCgQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=congressional%20district%20james%20monroe%20james%20madison%20first%20congress&f=false)

It sounds a bit like former Congressman Ray LaThug constantly claiming he represented "Abraham Lincoln's" seat in Congress.

I actually researched that one when LaThug was running for Governor and did an overlay of the 1840s district lines for IL-7 (Lincoln's district) with the 2000s district lines for IL-18 (LaThug's district)

What I was about 70-75% of the turf was indeed the same areas. Both districts were central Illinois based and made up of almost the same counties. Lincoln and LaThug would have represented many of the same towns.

But here was the kicker -- the one BIG difference between Lincoln and LaThug's district was the population center of the district. Lincoln's a Springfield-based seat and contained all of Springfield and the surrounding suburban towns in Sangamon county. Lincoln's home in the Petersburg (now New Salem?) area was located in this region. By contrast, the Peoria area was entirely outside the district.

LaThug's district is the opposite -- the population center was Peoria county and the Peoria-Pekin urban area where Peoria and Tazewell county meet. That's where LaThug is from and his political power base, he was a Peoria combiner who was once appointed state Rep. from there. The Springfield area, by contrast, where Lincoln hailed from, is almost entirely drawn out of the district. LaThug had a bit of Sangamon county by the modern district lines were drawn so the bulk of it is in John Shimkus' district. The urban part of Sangamon county where Springfield and the surrounding town are located is not a part of LaThug's district.

Thus, although Lincoln and LaThug shared mostly the same electorate, their power bases were entirely different and they never represented each other's communities. LaThug DID share much of former Senator Everett Dirksen's powerbase in Pekin and old congressional district, I'm sorry to say.
