Comcast, the largest cable operator in the Twin Cities and the nation, on Thursday will use St. Paul's Neighborhood House as the backdrop to unveil a program offering fast Internet access to low-income Twin Cities families for $10 a month. Comcast's program, called Internet Essentials, is a national effort to help bridge the "digital divide" for low-income families who cannot afford the high cost of Internet broadband. The program will enroll families for three years, but those families potentially could continue to use it until their children graduate high school, according to company officials. "We're transforming the way low-income households can adopt broadband," Comcast spokeswoman Mary Beth Schubert said. Officials from Comcast's Philadelphia headquarters will announce the program at Neighborhood House, a social service agency that has anchored St. Paul's West Side for decades. Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius and St. Paul Schools Superintendent Valeria Silva are scheduled to attend, Comcast said.

This is outright racist, socialist wealth redistribution.

sounds about right. and Comcast is free to charge what they want and I am free to decide to use them or not. I don’t see a probem
The “big players” around here still offer that speed at $29+ per month...
It’s called cost shifting.
You know what. I’m tire as hell of paying half my wages in taxes to give to people that sit on their butts, and then having to pay full price, while they get discounted rates (or free service) on everything.
To hell with this. I’m going to quit my job and live the high life.
as a former Comcast customer, I wouldn’t pay that much for it
“”We’re transforming the way low-income households can adopt broadband,”
I wonder how many of those same families are paying for premium channels?
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
How exactly is there a digital divide when we have flash mobs and constant Facebook/Twitter updates from the hood by way of cellphones?
Yet another reason to hate Comcast. And I do.
Take a look at your internet bill under universal service fee It used to be just for phones but now its everywhere. See my blog/article for more info. (http://www.examiner.com/political-buzz-in-new-york/anatomy-of-a-giveaway) Or dont if you think I am just pimping.
Captain Planet’s tie-breaking vote way back when.
And like the telephone tax implented to fund the Spanish-American War, it will never go away.
I’ve been trying to get Comcast to extend service in my rural area. Quite a few folks would be happy to pay full price for Internet. I’m a half a mile from where they stopped at a few years ago and service on my road will never happen.
Trust me on this, Comcast never does anything that doesn’t pay for itself 100x over. How much FREE publicity and advertising is Comcast getting on this issue?
For every $10 internet service Comcast gives to the poor, there’s another customer willing to fork over $189/mo for Xfinity Triple Play or Comcast Business Class 50/10 service.
Personally I think Comcast is making a pretty smart business decision....
Get ‘em hooked on you know what and you’ll have a new customer at regular prices after a few years. This is the pusher giving samples. Comcast ain’t dumb.
