When Carla graduated 10 years ago, she thought her law degree would be a permanent ticket to a high-paying job. But instead of selling her mind, Carla is selling her body. After student loans, debt, a layoff and unemployment battered her bank account, she now finds herself in an almost unbelievable position dancing in a topless bar.
"Did I ever think Id be taking my top off for rent money? No. I was in my mid-30s and had never danced before," said Carla, who asked that we use her stage name and withhold her identity and some personal details. "As a little girl, I never thought to myself, 'I just want to grow up and be a stripper, or, All I ever wanted to do in life is climb in the lap of sweaty stranger and take my top off.'
"But, with our economy the way it is, especially in smaller cities ... you strip or you starve," she said.
Last month, as part of our coverage of Americas economic malaise, we chronicled the story of a young father who took a job as a firefighter in Iraq after he couldnt find work in Miami. Then we asked msnbc.com readers: What crazy things are you doing to make ends meet? This is the second of three reader stories well share. Last week, we wrote about a man who has turned to dumpster diving to keep food on the table for his three children. Now, we tell Carla's story.
Carla couldn't find work in the legal profession, so she's dancing in a topless bar now.

I do, after people ask me to put it back on.
So we get to see her briefs every night?
topless huh ?
So she still works with legal briefs.
I have no college at all, and I make $120 an hour without taking anything off.
She sounds like a f*ckin moron. Pardon my french. But I get all bent out of shape by this. She’s shown exactly who she is. She’s no lawyer. She’s a stripper. End Discussion.
women strip for more than money.....they strip for the thrill of it.
Half naked lawyerasses!
Can she sue her law school?
$50/hour!!! Those broads make $100’s per hour. She must be a real loser! (If you touch me I’ll sue attitude.)
At least she found honest work.
Good for her. She is finally earning what she gets paid.
Oh, yeah? You oughta ask those standing behind you.
The joke around the office used to be that once you get man boobs, they never go away, no matter how much you diet or work out. My shirt's staying on!
if you were making a $100 an hour cash, would you broadcast it?
She reports $50 an hour. These women make 6 figures it’s all in cash. However, they usually have drug, alcohol and other problems. It’s very hard to be a stripper without developing some very serious issues.
oh, come on, either way she going to be a wh-re.
What does she do when she’s gyrating on some fat slob’s lap and an ambulance goes by?
Lawyer vs. Stripper....supply and demand
What do you do to make $120 an hour??
$50/hour!!! Those broads make $100s per hour.
Shoot, $50. an hour is chump change..My girlfriend makes anywhere from $1,200-$1,500 per night 5hr. shift. She only does it to keep me in the lifestyle I’ve become accustomed to.
My hair stylist makes $50 an hour and works from 0600 through 1900. Mostly cash of course and he’s about to buy his 3rd investment property.
I might leave the corporate world and cut hair!
Oh’ and he’s as straight and conservative as they come!
They have breast reduction surgery for men too. :)
Isn’t there a rule about pictures around here? I want to know if she is guilty or not...
In our circle, we have an entertainment attorney who practices in Beverly Hills. To avoid the trolls, let’s just say he is one of the most right-wing attorney’s who managed to keep his head down in ultra-blue Los Angeles. He charges $200/hr even in this Obama Depression.
Things like this are only supposed to happen to people when a Republican is president.
Must be nice to have versatile career options.
We need more evidence.
Welcome to FR.
She has a degree so she could become a teacher and do even less work for about the same money, PLUS retire at age 50!
All made possible by those schmucks in the private sector that must work until age 70 to pay for it.
Pictures at the link but only profile shots.
Thanks for the welcome! By the way, is that what is called “ bar hopping?”....
Only $20-$50 an hour?
Sweetheart, go East, to Providence, RI!!!
Man, that cartoon hits home.
“You strip or you starve.”
That’s what I always say!
I’d like to know what line of work her customers are in such that they can blow that kind of money on her ‘artistic performance.’
“It’s very hard to be a stripper without developing some very serious issues.” Like becoming a lawyer?
Talking about pictures. The last picture on your profile page is very touching. Never saw it before...
(Sorry for being OT)
I met and fell in love with a wonderful, beautiful, intelligent woman
named Carla. She has a law degree and was employed as a lawyer
with a top notch firm for 9 years. Some time ago she was laid off
due to the bad economy and she now makes her living working as a
topless pole dancer.
We plan on getting married soon so I am taking her home to meet
my family. As you might guess, I am apprehensive about explaining
her background to mom and dad. I want them to like and respect
her but don't know if honesty is the best policy in this situation.
My concern is this: Should I tell my parents that Carla is a lawyer?
Our lawyer in Century City is $500/hr.
Some can make that.
Many find themselves locked into virtual slavery. If no one comes into the “gentlemen’s” club, they still have to tip out to the bar (in many, not all, places), they may have to agree to work a certain number of nights a week, and pay even more if they don’t come in.
It is possible, if one does the math, and is not actually prostituting on the side, to find that a nine to five would provide more benefits and more money on average, over time.
Then you run up bills for self medicating - drugs or alcohol - and all the other stupid taxes people who make poor choices have to pay, and it can leave little for the three children to eat on, especially as the view of men that they often develop does not tend to lead them into choosing good “baby daddies” who will actually provide for them.
While I'm not quite thinking guilty, I'm not thinking $50 an hour, either.
I.T., Support, design, implementation. Systems Analysis. Networking, training. Self-employed.
No one would hire me, so I started my own business. Tough for a while, now things are pretty good. Keep in mind, I rarely work 8 billable hours in a single day. More like 4 or so. Anywhere from “1 hour phone call” to “14 hours in a server-based emergency on friday night with weekend hourly billing being applied”. That was a good month.
Comment Of The Day!
Your welcome. Well at least she isn’t hopping in one of the many bars on 8 mile or Van Dyke.
If true, its a sad story.
