AUSTIN, Texas – A Texas teenager was charged with assault after six students were hospitalized when they ate marijuana-laden brownies he served them at a school band practice, myFOXaustin.com reported Wednesday.

Kevin Coffey, a 17-year-old student at Austin's Lake Travis High School, told authorities he didn't know the brownies contained drugs when he handed them out -- but police said text messages he had sent to friends proved otherwise.

Police said many of the students were unaware of the brownies being laced with pot and six were transported to the hospital by their parents.

Hard to imagine that he wouldn't get caught, after the band segued from a Sousa March into "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".... /s

Seemed like a good idea at the time, perhaps?

Hospitalized for eating pot brownies??? Are they trying to tell us that none of those kids had ever been stoned before?

Then again, eating it in brownies can be quite intoxicating, or so I'm told.

We are officially a nation of pussies. Ok, the kid should be in trouble,,, fine, got it. But a charge of “assault”,, and parents speeding their little darlings to the EMERGENCY ROOM? LOL

They should have taken them to Burger King for the munchies, and had a talk with ‘em about how this is a little lesson to file away.

Eating the stuff, if made right, will hit you ten times as hard as smoking it...or so I'm told. Being that high can be unsettling even for someone who has been high before. If one has never been high before, it can be downright scary. You can't OD on pot, but you sure can think you will.

Is there a different standard way of treating crimes of poisoning than calling them assaults?

six students were hospitalized

They locked down the school, flew the injured to the hospital in medivac helicopters and hazmat teams secured the rest of the brownie material for testing.

"Hospitalized for eating pot brownies??? Are they trying to tell us that none of those kids had ever been stoned before?"

Neither the kids nor parents knew the cause of the symptoms the kids were experiencing. The kids might have been given LSD or another psychedelic hallucinogen with potentially very serious long term consequences. It could have been a poison. Some do have hallucinogenic side effects. Even if the boy admitted it was pot, why believe him?

The parents did the right thing by taking their children to the hospital.

Oh hell, the fact that the perp was a musician was the only thing that led me to believe he'd be that dumb.

I say that as a lifelong musician.

Yes, that was hilarious. I loved the part where he said to the 911 operator, something along the lines of: " I think we've had too much and we're going to die...by the way, do you know the score for the Redwings game?"

Overeating pot can be terrifying. Even for a chain pot-smoker. For those people that never smoke, it must have been excruciating.

While I support legalization of nearly everything, I believe there should be jail time for drugging someone without consent. Especially with something more serious like mushrooms or LSD, where unknowingly overdosing is extreme psychological torture that can last for days.

There was a 911 tape released a while ago where a cop made brownies. He and his wife ate too much and admitted they did on the 911 call. They were frantic and actually thought they were dying.

Doctors found high levels of THC the active chemical in cannabis in their system, but the seriousness of their sickness was not reported.

They probably forgot what their symptoms were.

Poisoning? You gotta be kidding. Thats the same mentality that calls one girl giving another girl a Midol “drug dealing”.
It was a silly prank and he should be in a little trouble. But assault is violence, this was attempted peace./
Besides,,if they ATE the brownie, shouldn’t it be Battery? After all, the “assault” was “completed”.

This seems more “naughty”, than evil.

As a parent, I'm inclined to agree... but as an observer in this case, I must say that those must have been some amazingly potent brownies to cause symptoms that intense. Caution is good, no argument. But hopefully a majority of those parents -- some of whom had undoubtedly eaten and enjoyed pot brownies in the past, this being Austin -- also felt a little silly afterwards.

Yes, that’s true, and if he made the brownies with kine bud, and then gave them to people who have no tolerance for THC, the effect can be sort of similar to LSD, although not quite as intense, and it can last a long time.

Don’t ask me how I know these things >_>

But also, remember that cop who made some weed brownies from some stolen weed or something, then called 911 to report that he was dying.

He was tripping is what he was.

I mean,, assault is if i swing my fist and miss. But if I connect, then it’s battery. So,,,, if he connected with the brownie,, isn’t that actually Battery? I think assault would fit if he said “say,, wanna groovy brownie?”. And the kid says,, no, thanks, im chewing gum right now.

THAT would be assault, (with a loaded brownie)

"As a parent, I'm inclined to agree... but as an observer in this case, I must say that those must have been some amazingly potent brownies to cause symptoms that intense."

Neither of us have any idea how much, or exactly what kind of 'pot' was in those brownies. Was it hashish? THC extract? Could they have been laced with something else like PCP?

They could well have been strong enough to set off unpleasant physical symptoms like vomiting and also paranoia. You and others are assuming the parents knew the cause. I don't see that in this story at all. Even if the kid admitted it, they would have only had his word as to what was in them. Would you trust that?

If he had given them tablets or capsules and said they were just THC - would that be OK with you, meaning you wouldn't bother taking them to a doctor? I don't see any difference at all. The only facts available to the parents were that their children had likely ingested some kind of drug against their will. Assault is the right charge in this case.

No, and I think perhaps you misunderstood me. As a parent myself, I was agreeing with you -- that the parental reaction was appropriate, and if you look at my other comments you see that I think the joker's stupid act deserves serious punishment. And with regard to your other comments, I grew up in the 60's and know better than to trust ANYTHING somebody tells you about a drug they have in their hand.

That said, once the parents DID know the cause, and it had been confirmed, it would have been happier all around to drop the panic level and chill out. Unfortunately that does not seem to have happened.
