Obama: 153 Bridges Will Collapse (Another Scare Tactic)
Rush Limbaugh.com ^ | September 2011 | Rush Limbaugh

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: So I'm walking through the library last night, the television set's on, I had it on for other people. I don't watch it. I had it on. One thing there's no football on, so why have it on? Anyway, Damages hadn't started yet, so no reason to have it on. And I walked by and I hear Obama, I'm not even looking at the screen, I hear Obama say this and I stopped dead in my tracks and I almost started trying to pull my hair out. I said, "Who in the world is gonna believe this?"

OBAMA: There are 153 structurally deficient bridges that need to be repaired. Four of them are near here on or around the Beltline. Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls? (applause)

RUSH: When did the last one fall? What was the first stimulus for? What was the first trillion dollars for to fix all these bridges, 153 structurally deficient bridges. He's admitting that during his reign, he hasn't done anything about any of these deficient bridges. You've got this little bill he's waving around. He hasn't filed a bill. There is no jobs bill of Obama's that has been filed in Congress. Louie Gohmert filed his own two-page job bill, and it's called the American Jobs Act. They stole little Barry's title, stole his name, stole the name of his bill. Little Barry's out there waving this thing around as though there are millions of jobs in that 155-page thing he's waving around. And Gallup, I just saw this, Gallup's got a poll result apparently out there that a majority of Americans want the jobs bill passed. Sorry, majority of Americans, it isn't gonna be passed. There's no intention for this thing to pass in all or in part, there's no way.

How many Democrat senators are up for reelection in 2012? That's the main reason it's not gonna be passed. Well, it's over with 20. There are a lot of Democrat senators up for reelection in 2012. There's no way this jobs bill is even gonna get a vote in the Senate. There's no way Dingy Harry is gonna subject his people, not after what happened in New York 9, not after what happened in New Jersey and what happened in Virginia and Scott Brown's election in Massachusetts.

Hi, folks. How are you? Rush Limbaugh. I think, therefore I am here, behind the Golden EIB Microphone. Our telephone number if you want to be on the program is 800-282-2882. The e-mail address, ElRushbo@eibnet.com.

Don't worry about looking up the exact number, Snerdley. It's not that big a deal. I just heard this, "Why wait 'til another bridge fails?" He's in Raleigh, North Carolina, yesterday with this, and Bite Me is in North Carolina today. So those people got two days of traffic tie-ups.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: So what we have here: Here we have a guy who said that we're gonna get rid of political as usual, gonna be unified -- all of the utopian stuff. And what do we get? Nothing but a continuing of the usual politics of fear, crisis, and panic. So now Obama says there are 153 bridges out there on the verge of collapse. Once again, grab audio sound bite number seven. Listen to this one more time, folks.

OBAMA: There are 153 structurally deficient bridges that need to be repaired. Four of them are near here on or around the Beltline. Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls? (applause)

RUSH: People are cheering this! Why would we have to wait for another bridge to fall? The question is: Why didn't you fix these bridges with the first trillion dollars that you spent? But more importantly than that -- more importantly than that -- if there are bridges about to fall down, shouldn't the Secretary of Transportation shut them down? If there are 153 bridges...? Did he say here on the verge of collapse? No. Hundred fifty-three "structurally deficient bridges" need to be repaired. Where? We need to be told where these 153 bridges are, because if he doesn't tell us, then the regime -- Obama -- is holding drivers hostage. He's letting us drive over 153 bridges that could apparently fail and people could plummet to their deaths at any moment.

Name the bridges! You remember how they demanded specifics from Bush and Tom Ridge on terror threats 'cause they accused those two guys of politicizing terror threats? Well, here. The Bamster says he knows of 153 bridges that could fall down at any moment, and four of them are "near the Beltline in North Carolina," four of them. name 'em so that people can avoid them. It is his job to shut them down, not hold their repairs hostage to passing his little tax bill. Do you understand? If he's serious, 153 bridges are structurally deficient, and rather than fix 'em, he's holding the repair hostage and endangering the lives of people that drive on these bridges just so he can get his nonexistent bill passed?

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: How do we think we can fix 153 bridges Obama says are at risk when after ten years we still haven't rebuilt the World Trade Center?

Maybe we could stop skimming 30 or 40% off highway funds and fix the bridges instead of paying for high speed rail and parking apps for phones.

You are correct. The funds for bridge repair have already been collected. The fuel tax at both state and federal levels in the states with bad bridges have been misspent

Let’s see, there are funds for abortions worldwide, guns to Mexico, $530 Million to defunct solar companies, studies of the brown marsh mouse, and to study male genital size’s relationship to passive gay role playing, but nothing for bridges unless they can raise your taxes.

the environmentalists would never allow them to be built.

It will take 6 years for the environmental impact reports to be prepared. Then Snail Darter Two or other "endangered species" will be discovered using all 153 bridges as habitat.

What's happened to our country?

A couple years ago Carl Levin was trying to get $2 million out of highway funds to save Tiger Stadium in Detroit. His justification was that a bus stop would be built in the place.

The people mover in Detroit is only taking in some 7% of its costs in rider fares, the other 93% are picked up by the taxpayers and Detroit wants to vastly expand the route to residential neighborhoods. 25% rider funding appears to be all that is required to consider public transportation a “success”.

America’s financial problems aren’t a lack of money. If anything, we “give” our government far more than they should have. Like spoiled rich children, its made them greedy and they’ve borrowed money from outside on the promise that mommy and daddy taxpayer will cover the debt.

A modern day Emporer with no clothes.

Obama is coming unglued.

He has definately jumped the shark.

He is a product of affirmative action and a person who has been able to cruise because of racial preferences. He has a thin skin and doesn’t seem well prepared to make serious compromise or to face the prospect of not getting what he wants.

And more than that - I don’t think Obama has ever had to cope with serious conflict or challenges before, and he probably has never had to deal with open ridicule and people laughing at him.

He had better get used to it.

A real press question would be: Mr Obama, these bridges didn’t just need repair overnight. Why wasn’t any of your FIRST TRILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT earmarked for these obviously known deficient structures?

It’s just total kabuki BS.

Kind of. They watermelon’s will wait until construction is “underway” (read the bridge is in an un-usable state), then they will launch the lawsuits. Old bridge gone, no new bridge to replace it. The American citizen screwed again!

Not too long ago he said there isn’t anyone around that does bridge building anymore it has been so long since we built a major bridge. His solution to this problem is to hire out of work home construction people to build bridges. He doesn’t seem to realize that building houses and bridges for the most part require different skills.

I am constantly astonished at his lack of knowledge of many things that you would think the average person would know. But the dims claim President Bush was an idiot...

The only bridge I’ve heard of recently that is in big trouble is the Sherman-Minton Bridge in Louisville. Back in Feb 2009, the bridge took a barge strike, and this apparently caused serious damage that is just now making itself known. The bridge has been shut down, causing severe traffic congestion, as this is the main route over the Ohio River for I-64.

In one of Obama’s first longwinded speeches pushing the “stimulus”, he called for the exorbitant sum in order in part to repair the “infrastructure”, roads, bridges, things like that for the “shovel ready” jobs it would provide. When he got what he wanted, the infrastructure along with the shovel ready jobs was ejected into the old memory hole. Now, he wants the same thing all over again. Huh?

He says so much, folks, that we’re just plain old exhausted and confused. I AM SO TIRED OF THIS SORT OF STUFF . . . .

153 less places where the feds can use our money to enable the locals to set up "Click It or Ticket" or those stupid "DWI" checkpoints in order to further suppress people's right to travel.

“the environmentalists would never allow them to be built.”

That is true...the Bonner bridge over Oregon Inlet, outer banks, NC is dangerously close to falling down. The Southern Environmental law Center (SELC) filed suit on 2JUL11 to stop construction of a new bridge.

When people die because of SELC actions, will they be charged with manslaughter?

The Mackinaw bridge in Michigan needs a new road deck at $300 million. Fortunately its run as a public private hybrid and much of the cost will be paid for by a fare increase.

Actually according to this site...., there are over 146,000 deficient bridges.

Then what has happened to the billions in fuel and road use taxes that have been collected over many past decades?

I am prepared to travel armed and on horseback rather than be hived-up in central cities dependent on public transportation like these people want.

The way I look at it is that this enemy will have to mount up some people with skill sets similar to mine in order to stop me. That won't happen.

I always thought that this would not probably not happen in my lifetime. It is a travesty that we may have arrived at the point where it will.

Thankfully, I am prepared.

Since the President never prevaricates, we need a FOIA request for the President to disclose, for the good, welfare, and safety of the public, where oh where these 153 bridges exist. If any of those 153 fall down, and he personally knew about it, he would be liable.

IIRC, at present, 18.4 cents of every dollar you pay for a gallon of gas goes to the Federal Highway Trust Fund, where a huge percentage of it is diverted from roads and bridges and wasted. From Heritage:

Federal Highway Transportation Program: Why States Should Opt Out:

Excerpt:

Dysfunctional Federal Program

Funded primarily by motorists and truckers who pay a series of user taxes, federal transportation policy has lost its focus over the past few decades. Spending has been diverted to a number of non-road purposes, earmarking has escalated, and pervasive regional inequities have created financial losers and winners.

As Heritage has noted elsewhere, less than two-thirds of federal surface transportation spending from the highway trust fund goes for general-purpose highways.[3] The other one-third funds costly and underutilized transit investments (transit receives 20 percent of federal funds but serves less than 2 percent of urban passengers); bike and hiking paths; metropolitan planning organizations; covered bridge restoration; historic train station conversions; cityscapes and flower planting; earmarks; U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) overhead; livability schemes; and low-valued university transportation research centers.

Added to these deficiencies is the imbalance between the donee and donor states—the latter being concentrated in the South[4]—and numerous counterproductive regulations that undermine safety (CAFE standards); raise costs (Davis–Bacon); and impose delays on projects (NEPA).

I was irritated when Jenny Granholm said she wanted to let some of our roads go back to dirt but after thinking on it for a while I decided I agree with her.

25 year ago they paved all the dirt roads around my hometown because the oil infrastructure was going in. All the heavy trucks trashed the roads. Now those trucks are mostly gone and we're still paying to maintain those paved roads that only have a couple of houses per mile and have very light traffic. There's no justification to pay for maintaining those roads that way.

I live on a dead end dirt street with one other house and it sees virtually no maintenance. They don't even plow snow but I still pay taxes as if it were any other street. I want them to abandon it altogether.

Is that your road? It’s mighty purdy!

Yes, there comes a time when the reason for having done something no longer justifies continuing to do it.

In this piece I posted elsewhere on this thread, the author talks about why a particular bridge is so tall — it was built to accommodate tall sailing ships, um, like maybe the ones that discovered America! So, yes, the replacement bridge doesn’t need to be sky-high. Here:
