Jew versus Jew
American Thinker ^ | 9/16/11 | Robin of Berkeley

A split is developing among Jewish Democrats. Could it lead to a divorce?

Years ago, there was a popular movie, Kramer vs. Kramer, starring Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. It was heartbreaking flick, as these two spouses, once so in love, duke it out in court.

I was thinking that there's a similar type experience happening today within the Democratic Party. Just like when lovers start sparring, there's a battle going on among American Jews.

The reason is that there are two distinct groups of Democratic Jews, with almost nothing in common. They have coexisted peacefully for many decades, staying together for the sake of their "child," the beloved Democratic Party. But with Obama in office, the differences are starting to become irreconcilable.

One notable example of the coming apart of the once reliable Jewish voting bloc is the recent election in New York. Strangely enough, a Republican won handily for the very first time in almost a century. But even more bizarre, the winner of the Jewish vote is a Catholic and the loser a Jew, in the most heavily Jewish congressional district in America.

To add to the strangeness, the previous occupant of the House seat

As a non-Jew, I witnessed this split become apparent right here on F.R.

Next thing you know, we Irish Catholics will become Republicans.

I have noticed that US Jews have always heavily supported the Blacks and civil rights causes, and been repeatedly stabbed in the back for it. Jews continue to support those common interest groups despite treachery amounting to antisemitism.

Will it be the same for the Rat party in the long run, or is this a new dynamic? Have the traditional Jews finally had enough?

I'll almost bet even money that the Democratic National Committee now realizes the stink coming out of the Chicago political machine (of which Obama is a product of that "machine") and could gang up to flatten it, especially with a LOT of very powerful New York-based and Boston-based Democrats more than happy to "do the dirty work."

‘Have the traditional Jews finally had enough?’

I think that this is as much a function of the birth rate of the Orthodox Jews in America than anything else. Older Jews who knew well how important Israel has been are frightened and the new swelling numbers of traditional Jews are asserting themselves.

Just my 2 cents.

My SIL is Jewish, and was raised in a very New York, liberal family. A few years ago she left the Dems and is now registered as an independent. She voted for McCain in 2008, because she perceived that Obama had ties to the Muslim world and was anti-Israel.

I hope more and more Americans who happen to be Jewish will make the same move.

Funny, but it’s almost true. Weekly mass attending Catholics (like me) are far more likely to vote GOP than “cultural catholics” who support abortion and homo “marriage”.

...would make a great Mad comic, if Antonio Prohias were still alive.

Most of my family were Reagan Democrats. About 70% voted Republican, and this is in a union family.

The question may arise: how on earth can Jews, even leftist ones, despise Israel, a Jewish state. The reason is that leftists sympathize with the Third World, not the First World. They view the US and Israel as the great oppressors of the world's noble peasants, with whom they identify.

Of course, progressives turn a blind’s eye to the fact that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. Hence, Israeli women are not enshrouded in a burqa, and gays are not stoned to death. But none of this is relevant to the leftists. If you're still scratching your heads to figure them out, don't bother. Progressivism is an inconsistent and illogical ideology.

Not everything Jewish is about Israel.

Trying to ‘figure out’ the way a Liberal Jew thinks is an exercise in futility. Liberalism is a mental disorder. Regardless of all the facts, there are at least some Jews who would vote for Hitler and Achmadinajad if they ran on the ‘Democrat’ ticket, in the name of reaching out of course. These people are (to quote a medical term) nutty as a fruit cake. They can't help it. It is just a compulsion. These are the Jews who are crazy about all the transgender/homosexual, pro-criminal, environmental, ban Christianity, etc. crap.

I think this started as an overwhelming fear of Christianity. The Liberals touted themselves as ‘secular’ (although they seem to love all things Islamic). Republicans represented strong American Christian values which, illogically, and unjustifiably, frightened even observant religious Jews.

Then you had the Communists/Socialist Jews who hate ALL religions and were attracted to the secular (like Peace out, man..) socialistic policies of the Democrats. These are the guys who, ironically, march in anti-Israel, pro radical Islam marchs, progressively names a “PEACE” rally (LOL) of course.

Obama has brought at least some of the people to their senses. For that, we should thank him and his beautiful, angelic, impeccably mannered wife. They have unintentionally exposed the true nature of how the far Left views Jews and Judaism, and always does. JMHO Like anything, Judaism is a mixed bag of nuts and none of this is new. The same dichotomous variance of opinions exists even in Israel itself, now, and historically. Look up the Maccabees for example.

The liberal Jewish voting monolith has cracked and split, irrevocably in my opinion. Jewish votes are up for grabs to whoever is the pro-Israel candidate, and all his/her campaign has to do is air that damning footage of Obama’s contemptuousness toward Bibi Netanyahu.

However, this is nothing less than the historic social divide between Reform and Orthodox Judaism finally rising to public view. I have had Reform Jews tell me (I’m Catholic) how much they loathe the Orthodox for their supposed rigidity about the Mosaic Law.

It’ll be interesting to watch.

BTW, your reference to Antonio Prohias brings back memories. I was ten years old when Castro took over and had started reading Mad magazine. The “Spy Vs Spy” cartoon appeared soon afterward and the byline stated that Prohias “refused to become a `Castro Convertible” and was forced to flee Cuba. Later I learned about the convertible sofa bed with the same name. Later still came “Spy Vs Spy Vs Spy” where `truth is neither black nor white but merely shades of gray’.

IIRC, someone wrote a book using the cartoon to suggest that espionage agents eventually come to place professional rivalry above national loyalty. Thus the man in black and the man in white and the woman in gray are never identified by ideology.

Didn’t know Mr. Prohias had passed on. Our loss.
