Plane Crashes Into Crowd at Nevada Air Race, Injuring More Than 75

DEVELOPING: RENO, Nev. -- An airplane crashed Friday into a crowd attending an air race here, injuring dozens in what one event official described as a "mass-casualty situation."

A medical official later said more than 75 people had been injured, including 25 critically. There was no official word on deaths, though one report put the toll as high as 12 and the crash near the grandstands left a horrific scene of bodies and wreckage.

It appears that one of the plane’s elevators broke off and it became uncontrollable. I saw some graphic footage, and there was nothing left of it. It just disintegrated.

A good friend of my wife had family at that race and we’re waiting to hear that they are OK.

This will be the end of the Reno Air Races. They can’t get insurance any longer and this will be the final accident for them.

It said the plane crashed into the first couple of rows, So as long as they were sitting further back in the stands, they should be fine, though shook up.

(NOT AN EXCERPT, MY SUMMARY - LR) The plane was a vintage WWII P-51 Mustang named "The Galloping Ghost". The pilot was 80-year-old Jimmy Leeward from Ocala, FL. Witnesses say the carnage was horrible with body parts all over - from those in the stands who had lost limbs. The plane appeared to have disintegrated on impact. Witness states she was about 30 yards away and a man in front of her started bleeding after being hit in the head with debris.

Prayers for the deceased and injured, and their families - also the witnesses... I can't imagine how horrible that would be to witness. Surely they will be haunted by this memory even if they are not among the injured physically.
