Last week Mr Berlusconi pushed through parliament a 54 billion euro austerity package which will hit pensions, public services and retirement ages, sparking violent clashes between riot police and demonstrators outside parliament in Rome.

I had the opportunity to go to Italy this last May, I was curious what people in Rome though about this guy. I did not meet one person who cared. The most common response was it was between him and his family, nobody else.

I think, at Berlusconi’s age, he is hoping that any “election” doesn’t last more than 4 hours. Otherwise, he would suffer from “election disfunction”. Might cause a droop in his support. He definitely would want everything on the “up and up”.

Maybe he did; who's to say some of them weren't 'working' their way through nursing or medical school?
Seems to me he could learn true austerity measures by attending an American college, where they don’t “pay” for that sort of thing at all. Unless you count tuition...
