N. Korean claims of famine don’t add up

2011/09/16

MD NASRUDIN MD AKHIR and LEE EE WERN ask if the country is really seeking help for its people or is there an agenda behind its food appeal

NORTH Korea appears to be heading towards the same condition in the 1990s that led to a famine and resultant five per cent loss in population. Although records may have indicated a resurgence in food levels since the last decade of the 20th century, international aid has provided a significant supplement to the continual shortfall.

Up to July, North Korea was suffering a flood disaster, which swept away tens of thousands of farmland hectares, leaving a quarter of the country’s 24 million population at risk of starvation.

On the surface, it looks like another hunger crisis is hitting North Korea since the last catastrophe which killed between 600,000 and three million in the mid-1990s.

North Korea could have been saving the food supplies for the regime and its military forces.

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late founder of the nation and the current leader’s 70th birthday.

Norkieland is very much an enigma to the west. This might be an outlet for the nomenklatura.

Thinking same. “Rare glimpse?” Doubtful. A living communist propaganda poster. Everybody nicely dressed. A well-fed child with a snack, and wearing the latest style in play clothes, and look at those new shoes! A shiny new bicycle for mom. A woman heavily laden with apples in a spotless new sack. The only thing missing is a prop rooster fresh the ministry of information.

It's hard to tell what is going on in NK from this not-so-well-written article, not that it's ever easy.

North Korea could have been saving the food supplies for the regime and its military forces.

In other words for the average person there is a famine.

Maybe the regime is playing games but this article does not do much to alter the impression I have from other sources that there are probably a lot of very hungry people in NK.

N. Korea set aside large chunk of grain harvest for reserve in order to release it next year. So-called 'year one of powerful and prosperous nation.'

Ordinary people who can forage can survive, but military and Pyongyang elites live on food distribution from state. They are the ones hard-hit these days. That is why NK suddenly pleads to international relief agencies.

There are enough grain in NK to prevent famine, but regime hoards food for their political purpose.

There's a lot of SE Asian Engrishu in that report ~ the writers probably have the standard language facility of at least FOUR languages, and there's probably even a question in their own minds about which one is their first language.

It is up to the reader to figure out what they really said in New Straits Times.

Up the Straits toward Penang, the local Chinese language has an over 30% DUTCH vocabulary. It's really something neat to listen to ~ because all those English sounding words MEAN something different in so many cases.

We don’t know where this is or who are those people. Some favored region or group of people may be so favored as to eat well while others starve.
