Obama to offer his own deficit reduction package

WASHINGTON (AP) — Even as President Barack Obama prepares his opening bid on long-term deficit reduction, the White House wants to keep the focus on jobs and is determined to avoid getting sucked into another budget fight with lawmakers.

Administration officials see the task of attending to deficits as necessary but not necessarily urgent, compared with the need to revive the economy and increase employment.

The White House also sees this as the time to draw sharp contrasts with congressional Republicans, whose public approval ratings are lower than Obama's.

As a result, when Obama announces at least $2 trillion in deficit reduction measures Monday, he is not expected to offer all the compromises he reached with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, in July before those talks broke off.

"I would view this as the president's vision for how we achieve deficit reduction, which makes it inherently different than the sorts of legislative negotiations we were undertaking with the speaker over the summer," said the White House communications director, Dan Pfeiffer.

The plan represents an economic bookend to the $447 billion in tax cuts and new public works spending that Obama has proposed to as a short-term measure to stimulate the economy and create jobs. He's submitting it to a special joint committee of Congress given the task of recommending how to reduce deficits by $1.2 trillion to $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

Let me guess. He is going to raise taxes and borrow more money to pay down the deficit. Of course, the borrowing won’t be called borrowing, because the bookkeeping will be creative, until reality hits.

President Barack Obama speaks during a visit to Raleigh, North Carolina on September 11. Leading Republicans on Sunday spurned as "class warfare" an administration proposal dubbed "the Buffet rule" that would ensure millionaires are taxed at the same rate as the middle class less

Wouldn’t it be nice if he focused on the problems facing this Republic rather than running around the country trying to get reelected to a job he is totally unfit to have.

US President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden make their way into the Rose Garden for a statement on the American Jobs Act. Obama signaled he would pay for his $447 billion dollar jobs plan by raising taxes on the rich and energy corporations and demanded that Congress pass it right away less

Is this before or after he ‘generously’ bails out the EU Banks?

This isn't a serious proposal.

It's all about campaigning...his favorables on the left are going up again because he's doing class warfare. It's all about raising money for his campaign.

Putting the kabosh on his and Moochelle’s “vacations” would probably make a dent in the deficit.

You're right. Yet, he wonders why nothing gets done. He's the first president I've known who spends most of his efforts campaigning or trying to pit one class against the other. The man's no good for this Republic.

This is not a bill, it's another campaign issue. Obama will use its non-passage to blame the Republicans in Congress for everything that's wrong with the economy.

If only those evil Republicans had cooperated, we'd all be rich, employed, and safe. The oceans would be healed by now...

Bush had the deficit down to $169 B. Barry bumped it up 10x. TEN TIMES! In two short years.

The only way to reduce the deficit is to stop spending, curtail entitlements, rid the country of the filthy entitlement disease, stop the government ponzi schemes, and (most important of all) grow the economy by getting the government OUT OF THE WAY.

His proposal will have none of this. It will be all about “social and environmental justice” which means screwing the middle class and the rich.

And watch — his bogus “savings” will be spread over 10 years. So you’ll see a big number like $2 Trillion, but that means only $200 Billion per year which is about 1/7 of this year’s deficit.

We need adults in Washington before the whole nation collapses. Unfortunately, the public has no ken for straight-talkers like Bachman, Ryan, Palin and Perry.

See? I said it was a bad idea for Boehner to engage Obama directly. Now look at the returns on that boneheaded play by Republicans.

This needs to be repeated more.

Even Freepers don't know this.

It's all about campaigning

They finally admitted that the speech to the congress was really just a "campaign speech". And they are already using sound bites.
