Wisconsin education officials have ordered a high school to change its sports nickname from the Indians.
An alumnus of Berlin High School north of Milwaukee complained to the state Department of Public Instruction about the use of the nickname. That opened the door to the state ordering the school to change it.

They should change it to ‘Pakistanis’.
Change the name to “Big Reds.”
That is stupid
Since people love their teams, obviously the “Indians” are loved not disrespected.
People always want something to complain about.
If I were an Indian, I would be pissed.
The PC apparatchiks are now saying that Indians are no longer admirable for their tenacity, fighting spirit, ingenuity - which is what one wants when one chooses a team name, isn’t it? (not counting the idiots at UC Santa Cruz....)
It takes only one whiner to overturn what thousands of fans want to keep?
Isn’t it Stanford that is named the Pine Trees or some PC thing like that
And the name Wisconsin comes from the Chippewa Indians.
How about “Savages”...
they could keep the same mascot outfit and everything!
I like “Crusaders” myself. With big red crosses on the uniforms.
How about the “Nice Humans” that ought to satisfy everybody
An ALUMNUS was bitching about the name but when that same alumnus was at the school, he/she did not throw a pc hissy fit...
Outstanding. One pc moron ruins tradition out of liberal guilt.
and from the AP, libtard bastion of Obama worship.
lol, my husband is a red head that is what I call him.
...because it’s a disgusting name and something to be ashamed of! /s
How about "Redskins"? Or maybe "In'juns"? :^)
I thought it was a very impressive school, but their mascot is hilarious. Being strongly influenced by Scottish heritage, their mascot is a piece of tartan fabric. They're the "Tartans."
Not with that defensive line of theirs
Kind of reminds me of the ‘idiotic’ PETA group demanding Fishkill NY change its name to anything other than a name that promotes the killing of fish.
Which may (or may not) be commendable, but for the Dutch that settled there, ‘Kill’ meant body of water, not slay, so, in essence, the PETA PFOOLS are against ‘honoring’ a place that keeps fish alive.
Vikings and Fighting Irish next!
Yeah, but only to midgets. Wait, should I have said Little People?
That is funny.
Since it’s Berlin City, it should be “Turks”
If all native American or Indian names are done away with, there will be a lot of blank spaces on American maps.
OK how about the “Berlin High School Asshole Politicians”
The crazy part of this is that the State of Wisconsin OWNS the tech schools and they OWN one named Indianhead Tech at Rice Lake, WI.
Change the name to the “Cowboys”...or better yet...the “Fighting 7th Calvary”
Change the name to the “Cowboys”...or better yet...the “Fighting 7th Calvary”
It just happened in my hometown of Menomonie, Wisconsin. We have been the Menomonie Indians mascot logo for the last 75-80 yrs or so. Then a couple of UW-Stout activists (commies) and a bunch of the libturd school teachers & administrators & liberal school board banned the use of “Indians”, and just within the last couple of weeks a new “mascot” logo (aka Mavericks or Mustangs -— Ooooo what daring ingenuity) has been chosen and the school is hyping this with Ohhhh so much enthusiasm & hype! Apparently the new logo & mascot will be unveiled in some garish, hyped display. Makes me wanna puke. Rat bastard liberals can never leave anything alone. I hate em with a passion.
“Wait, should I have said Little People?”
Screw the Indians already.
Rename the team the Berlin “Germans”.
In either this, or the OP’s complaint, were American Indians ever asked their view? In a country that proudly flaunts the likes of Fighting Irish and Minnesota Vikings, why not give our red skinned brethren a chance to weigh in on the matter? I understand that objections are far, far from unanimous among them. Some of them have even gotten savvy and licensed their own tribe name.
Berlin Jelly Doughnuts? (Ich bin ein Berliner)
>>> That is stupid. Since people love their teams, obviously the Indians are loved not disrespected. People always want something to complain about.>>>
Don’t go bringing logic into this. But to prove your point, a few years ago some of these same PC police were trying to get UMass to change their nickname FROM Minutemen - because the Minutemen were of course a bunch of white guys and we can’t be glorifying white guys.
With Indians, Redskins, Seminoles, Warriors, and all “native American’ related names, they say we must change it because we are degrading them.
So liberal idiots, please make up your mind: does an athletic nickname glorify and honor or demean the mascot? Of course any thinking person knows it honors - or actually - is really just a fun way to separate teams.
I live in Richmond, Va. We just changed the name of our ball team from the “Braves” to the “Flying Squirrels”. The ones in my backyard seem pissed about it.
Time for “The Fighting Aryans” of Berlin High to take the field!
Stupid! Also dumb.
This kind of crap is happening on a weekly basis and it’s ridiculous. I’m Belgian by decent and would be thrilled to have a high school have the “Fightin Belgians” as a nickname. Unfortunately us Belgies are second only to France in our propensity to aquiesce.
Perhaps folks from Florida can clarify this, but as I understand it, the Seminole tribes in Florida have been a key in fighting the political correct libs who want Florida State to drop Seminoles as their mascot.
They know that Florida State football is the main reason anyone ever utters the word “Seminole” anymore, and that the use of that name is meant to honor the bravery and fighting spirit of Seminole warriors. So they do like it.
Again, Florida folks may debunk this, but that has been my understanding....
Illinois is an offensive Indian-derived name. We need to change the name to either Madiganistan, or whatever the Algonquin Indian word is for “Corruption on the Prairie”.
Fine. They should change the name to “Siberian-Americans”.
First, all they need to do is convene a series of public meetings to decide on the new name or circulate petitions and qualify the name of their choice for the ballot.
Then (if the name finds consensus), they need to create funding for all of the legal work involved with changing incorporation documents and contracts that may include the offensive name. They should accept responsibility of paying for the changing of logos on the schools, the stadium, the basketball court, the scoreboards etc.
They will also have to pay for new uniforms and cheerleader outfits. Any schedules or posters already printed will need replacing, too.
It's all very simple, really. Those who are offended should bear all responsibility for making any changes needed. No expense or energy should be borne by anyone else.
How about the “Native Americans?”
Illinois is the way the early French explorers/missionaries wrote hilinawe, which simply means “man” in the applicable Indian tongue. I didn’t know there were any derogatory connotations there. “Corruption on the Prairie” might require about sixteen syllables in Algonquin — these supposedly benighted tribes apparently had very little problem with that and wouldn’t have a short word for it. (Now killing raids upon their Indian neighbors, that would be another story. But hey, all men have weaknesses.)
How novel... wait, _I’m_ a “Native American”.
I was born here.
How about “Fightin’ Whiteys”?
Right . . . perhaps Berlin High School Poodles, or perhaps Buttercups.
There’s a street in Virginia Beach, VA called Witch Duck. The name dates back to colonial times when women accused of witchcraft were ducked under water to determine whether or not they were witches. I assume if they drowned that proved they were not witches. Are witches offended by the name?
