Could world social unrest come to America's streets?
BBC News ^ | September 19, 2011 | Daniel Nasaw

The beginnings? Historian Rick Perlstein says union protests in Wisconsin show the birth of a movement

It was a long, hot spring and summer on the streets of Greece, England and Madrid, as protesters and rioters vented their fury at high unemployment, painful austerity measures and following a fatal police shooting in London.

The US, meanwhile, has been virtually free of rioting and even of widespread peaceful political protest.

This is despite some of the highest unemployment in decades, growing income inequality, dissatisfaction with the nation's direction, frustration with its dysfunctional government and the threat of drastic cuts to social programmes.

On Friday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg raised the spectre of social unrest amid high unemployment among young Americans.

Oh, and BTW, this “historian” Perlstein they quote is an ex-FReeper. I just can’t imagine why he isn’t still around.

On another thread earlier, someone here made the suggestion that next summer will be the time when things get ugly, when it becomes apparent that Obama cannot be reelected and the Democrats launch a scorched earth hate campaign against the Tea Party. I hate to think like that but look what is going on right now, and it isn’t hard to see that we are on the edge of riots once again. When the food stamp crowd finds out the money is really gone there’s no telling what they will pull.

FURTHER COMMENTS / CLARIFICATION TO MY POST #25 ABOVE....COPY & PASTE FROM MY POST ON THE SAME SUBJECT ON SUNDAY, JUNE 12, 2011 FOLLOWS. FIGURED IT WAS WORTH REPEATING.

Buy ammo. And, do it correctly.....I have a few friends who still don't get it, ie: when I ask, "how much ammo do you have on hand?" I get a few answers of : Got plenty, plus 14 guns in the closet. Have 3 or 4 boxes of 12 ga, a couple for my kids .410, couple of boxes each for my 6 rifles, and a bunch of partial boxes for all my hand guns. I tell them that's fine if they can stay in the house and shoot out the windows, B-U-T if they need to run outside and shoot from behind the car or garage, they may find themselves in the do-do. One can only carry a couple of long guns (of different calibers) and a couple of handguns while on the run, along with their ammo. You shoot up those 3 - 20 round boxes of .30/06, 4 boxes of 7mm, 3 boxes of .45 ACP and you no longer have 3 guns....just 3 clubs.

Designate one shotgun, one rifle and one handgun as your primary "social unrest" home defense weapons and load up on the ammo for them. Having 20 guns doesn't do you any good if all you have is a few rounds for each. Kinda hard to watch out the FRONT living room window where the armed looters are moving around and dig through the BACK bedroom closet for more ammo. ("I KNOW I have at least a half box of .270 somewhere from last deer season......where the hell is it ???").

If you can't afford lots of expensive high caliber ammo, get a few bricks of .22 ammo. 300 rounds flying out that window from your .22 rifle and pistol may not drop a 250 lb man, but a wound in the arm with a .22 will slow him down, take him off the attack and put HIM on defense. Plus, with a bucket of .22 ammo, your wife and kid can easily load one gun while you shot the other.

Don't forget magazines / clips. It's great that you have 1 EXTRA mag that came with your favorite deer rifle, B-U-T a total of 2 mags with only 5 rounds each isn't going to last long until you hear "click" and stop shooting to reload them. If you can't get oversize mags, get a sack full of the "regular" ones.

As I see it our problems are:

Corrupt politicians.
Too many regulations.
High gas prices.
High unemployment.

And a President that lies constantly and makes one mistake after another.

Yes, its time for change.....

The riots will come from the Leftists and anarchists. But here, we do have the second amendment and the castle doctrine in many states as indispensable supports. This has impeded the progress of the Left and their friends at the BBC.
We have always thought of the 2A as a bulwark against a tyrannical government. But, it is also a defense against a willfully negligent government that intentionally allows its favored malcontents to run wild. The flash mobs are a result of intentional Leftist permissiveness consistent with moral relativism.

Don't.

Stay entirely off the government radar, if you can.
If your state is open carry, carry openly, or not at all.
If your state requires a license to conceal carry, and does not allow open carry... determine your actual self-defence needs, and act according to your own best interests, following the law whenever possible.
ie... local law says you have to take three distinct steps to get to an unloaded, secured gun carried in your vehicle. Key your glove box, your gun box, and your ammo box to the same key, and have a plentiful supply of legal mace and/or stun guns that allow you time to get to them.

Few states require any permit for simply owning a weapon kept in your home. If your does...move.

I have held CCW permits in two states, and one USA territory. At one time, my personal weapon collection was listed on official military PCS orders, tied to my SSAN number, so I am permanently tagged by the feds as possibly “dangerous” and in potential need of a no knock raid, should SHTF.

Anyone who privately owns a gun can legally give/sell you one or two, without any additional paperwork filed, in most states. Check the laws in your state.
Gun dealers and Pawn shops are now required by law to keep complete records of all gun sales, in all states.

Hint...it isn't for potential manufacturer defect /warranty issues.

Everyone tell the spouse and kids that you don't want a new tie, pair of socks or new shirt for Christmas or your birthday. Instead, a couple of boxes of ammo every time that special occasion rolls around would be more than welcome.

HA! SOP for me!

Anyone else have this quandary about getting the permit to carry concealed?

That's precisely why I have not applied for one!

Problem might be in affording enough ammo. All I have is a .22 rifle. Ammo is cheap compared to the big stuff. Guess I’ll have to borrow something from my son, a combat vet.

He knows guns like Rosie O’Donnell knows twinkies..

I am sitting in a DC hotel bar right now, listening to a group of Holder's people discussing how much money they are getting for programs and how much more the gub'mint will give.

This is a professional group and an expensive hotel. The entire group appears to be quite well off and from the conversation, they are all (in some way) in the redistribution of wealth business. As I enjoy my beer, I wonder what will happen when they no longer have wealth to redistribute ...

Your comments make me happy to live where I do: here in Washington State, one of the most liberal states in the country in many ways, one in 15 adults carry concealed now.

Sorry so many live where the 2nd Amendment is held in such contempt.

Good post.

Before I lost all my guns in that boating incident :), I had one particular long gun in .223 with 2K+ plus rounds for SHTF days, plus a couple "sniper rifles" i used for deer hunting, a couple .22 "plinking guns" for Plinking, plus a couple "riot guns" i used for bird hunting, plus a couple of "Saturday night specials" for, uh, some reason, and plenty of ammo for each, but again, they were lost in that boat/fire/earthquake/tornado thing.

When the flash mob/rioters move from the 7-11's and wall-Marts and move into neighborhoods, thats when the perps will die in large numbers and the Feds will start house to house confiscation and the real war will start.

Totally mis-guessed where that was going.

IMHO, if he were not who he is, other people would have marched on him by now, but have held back out of fear of stirring up a bigger mess than we are in (so far).
If the other D candidate had gotten the ticket, she would not have had the protection of 12% of the population possibly feeling like she was attacked for being who she was, rather than for doing what she was (I know, she represents a 50% demographic, but...).
It seems that other presidents have done far less to harm certain interests before ending up burnt (or worse).
Just a thought.

Surplus ammo is becoming plentiful and approaching cheap again. :P Also, get a Saiga-12, 12ga shotshells are cheap at Walmart and it goes through them (and the targets) fast.
