US House speaker: giving government more tax money like 'giving a cocaine addict more cocaine'

CINCINNATI — U.S. House Speaker John Boehner said Monday he agrees with President Barack Obama that everyone should pay their fair share of taxes, but that "class warfare" and higher taxes won't solve the nation's economic problems.

The Ohio Republican spoke to a business group luncheon at the University of Cincinnati less than two hours after Obama detailed a deficit reduction plan that includes higher taxes for wealthy Americans.

"I understand that it's easy to go out there and talk about taxing billionaires," Boehner said, but he said "class warfare isn't leadership" and the big need is to get people back to work amid a 9.1 percent unemployment rate.

"At a time when spending is out of control, giving the federal government more money would be like giving a cocaine addict more cocaine," he said.

Boehner said he supports a "fairer and flatter" tax code that eliminates loopholes.

I think he did use cocaine. Now he uses everyone.

What conservatives need to keep in mind is what control of the house means. It means that any decision you make can probably be over-ridden by a president/senate with control of the media.

It also means that with only 25 seats separating you from a defeat in your own house that you must count how many on your side are willing to vote with democrats when push comes to shove.

I think there are at least 25 dem voters in republican ranks.

If I may, the GOP controls the house where spending bills originate. The GOP could stymie a lot if they the guts. In addition, have you seen any attempt made by the GOP to repeal baseline budgeting, or even make it an issue...?

Interesting analogy given the Larry Sinclair accusation.

Stop payroll tax deductions. Make everyone write a quarterly check to the IRS. Lots of people don’t even know how much they make before deductions. I asked a Lib friend, several years ago, how much he made each week. He said, “I take home,,,,” I finally got him to pay close attention to ALL the taxes he paid,, on EVERYTHING. He’s now a Conservative. Took a while, but becoming aware of his tax burden got the ball rolling.

When the cuts to pay for the spending are ten years in the future or are imaginary...

This is why I'm not going to lose sleep when the "super committee" fails and the "draconian cuts" to the military and medicare are enacted. These cuts will be for 1 year and then their budgets will be restored if the Pubs take over. Also, because of the scare there will be stronger support for cutting other areas of the govt and reforming entitlements.

I don’t mind the phrase “fair share”, but I think they are looking at the wrong people.

Those who are paying nothing are not paying their fair share. And giving money to a program that gives more back to you some day than you put in is not sharing in the “taxation.” It’s simply sharing in an income diversion program.

Fairness would be everyone paying exactly the same rate on CONSUMPTION....a sales tax.

As Obama likes to say, “LET ME BE VERY CLEAR...”

A Democrat without OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY (OPM) is powerless. They can’t spread the money around to buy favors and votes without OPM.

And like most addicts, they will scream bloody murder, call you every name in the book, and even accuse you of MURDER when you take away the drug-of-choice.

The Cocaine addict analogy is spot-on. (And likely a jab at Obama’s suspected habit, as well!)

Exactly. This is a good line from Boehner.

This is the tightrope the Speaker always walks. Not all Pubs are conservatives. Also, while conservatives want things fixed NOW and are willing to risk losing their majority for it the Rats are only looking to get a majority again. Our opponent is not driven by the same desires. The Rats religion is govt and they want it under their control. They will lie. They will destroy the free enterprise system if it means they are in control.

He’ll compromise and raise taxes, making a deal with the Rats and the media who’ll make it sound as if it’s not a tax increase. Closing loopholes? What are those loopholes? Write offs? If you have to pay more in taxes, taxes are increased.

The GOP could stymie a lot if they the guts.

The govt has been operating without a budget for 3 yrs. The Rats didn't want to get pinned down when they had complete control and now don't want a budget because the various appropriation bills would eliminate a lot of what they are doing. Every time the Pubs push to the edge of a shutdown the media machine kicks in, the propaganda of the Rats, and the public begins to start in with the "can't we all work together" refrain.

In addition, have you seen any attempt made by the GOP to repeal baseline budgeting, or even make it an issue...?

The House passed the Ryan Budget proposal which begins to address this issue. The House passed Cut, Cap and Balance which dealt with this. The Senate won't even discuss this and the media won't report on it. The Pubs can go to war on this right now when they don't have enough to win, or they can push to get enough votes to win and then do it.

What the heck is a loophole anyway? A deduction?

If their strategy is to hold on till we get a new pres, they could do absolutely nothing on this issue. But they won’t, they’ll offer up a lite version of Marxism. Like they always do.

He has not done this yet, why would he do it when he's in a stronger position.

What are those loopholes? Write offs? If you have to pay more in taxes, taxes are increased.

The devil is in the details.

Many of our conservatives are uneducated about the legislative process (or act that way), many are simply purist and argumentative, and many are fickle.

That’s why we’re busy knocking off conservative presidential candidates and giving Romney a free ride.

I wonder if that was a secret message to Obama - since the word cocaine was specifically used.

I always thought that during the 2008 campaign Obama used “doubling down” as some kind of secret message to McCain who was rumored to have gambling issues.
