Obama set to outpace Bush on deportations

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says he backs immigration reform, announcing last month an initiative to ease deportation policies, but he has sent home more than 1 million illegal immigrants in 2 1/2 years — on pace to deport more in one term than George W. Bush did in two.

The Obama administration had deported about 1.06 million as of Sept. 12, against 1.57 million in Bush's two full presidential terms.

This seeming contradiction between rhetoric and reality is a key element of debate over U.S. immigration policy, and stakes are high for 2012's presidential election as Obama faces criticism from both conservatives and liberals.

Who knew? Obama is tougher on illegals than Bush? Well, we knew that Bush was soft on immigration.

Next thing you know, the Party Propaganda Ministry will be trying to sell us that Obama is more in line with the TEA Party on immigration and border security than Rick Perry is. </sarcasm>

The headline could also be written as:

“FOURTEEN MONTHS LEFT IN HIS TERM AND obama LAGS BEHIND BUSH IN DEPORTATIONS”...

So, the crack 'journalists' at Reuters are only now discovering the contradictions between Obama's rhetoric and reality?

I guess that we can give Reuters one or two points for their belated discovery, but not more than that.

I just recall the pictures of Bush prancing down the street waving a miniature Mexican flag, and castigating anyone who stood up for national security on the border as a racist vigilante. Beating Bush on immigration is like beating Mike Tyson on gallantry toward women.

IF its true(and that is a big IF) what do you want to bet that its because Bush put in policies to encourage deportations. In all probability Obama wasn’t able to make the changes he would like....similar to GITMO

It's undoubtedly true.

Indeed, Bill Clinton deported way more illegals than GWB.

At one time, I remember seeing a comparison that, during the Clinton administration, there had been something like 700 raids on employers using illegal labor and, during the Bush administration, there had been 36.

When it came to the illegal alien problem, GWB was an embarrassment.

Good on the war, good on judges, an all-around good man...but bad on spending, worse on illegals.

Many of those deportations were already in the pipeline.

Obama Administration Deceives on Immigration -- July 2011

And what about the “record” deportation, which including many habitual criminals? Well, many indeed have been deported, but what the Obama Administration fails to point out is that it was the Bush Administration that put most of them in the pipeline for deportation. But under Obama, as noted by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), convictions of criminal aliens have declined 60 percent. Also, the fiscal 2010 deportations really didn’t break the previous record, as revealed by an article in The Washington Post (12/6/10), this was another example of the administration bending statistics for its purposes.

The most irritating thing about this version of "blame Bush" is that the media implies or assumes that we all supported GWB's position on illegals.

In fact, it was one of the two issues that he was most frequently and loudly criticised for from the right.

Maybe it’s because millions more poured in when hussein practically promised them a free ride during his campaign?

but he has sent home more than 1 million illegal immigrants

Anyone know what constitutes 'sending home' to the administration? Always reject a liberal's premise. They prolly consider a release with notice to appear as sent home.

As a resident of northern NJ, I’d say this must be happening in other states, not here. We’re swamped with South American illegals, and any retail job requires that you can speak to them in Spanish or Portuguese.

Even if it was true, the number of LEGAL immigrants taking jobs from Americans here is a national disaster; as a result of both issues, American birthrate has plummeted, while the newcomers are inheriting the Earth.

Obama is not tougher on illegals than Bush was, what has been happening was put in motion by President Bush- but ONLY after he was pushed into it by citizens. Obama actually stopped the fence, so why does it really matter how many we deport when they can and do simply return? For that matter under the new Obama guideline deportation is slowing rapidly right now.

I find it humorous that someone thinks it makes Obama look good to compare him to President Bush on illegal immigration/border issues. To those of us that care- Bush was certainly not a winner on those issues.
