Tony Bennett apologizes for 9/11 remark (He left his heart in New York City)
CBS News ^ | 09/20/2011

Tony Bennett has apologized for remarks he made during an interview with Howard Stern Monday.

Talking about 9/11, Bennett said the U.S. caused the attacks.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, according to Newsday.com, Bennett said, "There is simply no excuse for terrorism and the murder of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks on our country. My life experiences -- ranging from the Battle of the Bulge (in World War II) to marching with Martin Luther King -- made me a lifelong humanist and pacifist, and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is the lowest form of human behavior.

"I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world."

While promoting his new album of duets, "Duets II," on Stern's radio show, Bennett asserted that the U.S. was responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.

"They flew the plane in, but we caused it," Bennett told Stern, according to the New York Daily News. The "they" in his statement is presumably terrorists.

Bennett also says former president George W. Bush admitted to him that the war in Iraq was a mistake. At an event at the Kennedy Center to honor Bennett, the singer says Mr. Bush told him, "I think I made a mistake," according to the Daily News.

A spokesman for Mr. Bush denied that to the Daily News, telling the newspaper, calling the account "flatly wrong."

I am sure his sales took a dive in response to his idiotic assertions. Thus a little backtracking on his statement. But he said what he said because he believes it.

Tony, you’re old enough to know that some statements are irretrievable and unforgivable. Like saying that your country brought one of the most horrific attacks in history upon itself.

You can’t get the toothpaste back in the tube, Tony.

From now on, ‘promoting’ things may become a little more problematic for Tony.

Let him try his ‘grand old man of show biz’ routine on people who will remember this piece of gratuitous BS and unalloyed hostility to the US.

Americans do NOT need this crap from ‘more-money-than-brains’ actors and singers. We are sick of it by now. F&^% him!!

Another “artist” who assumes that his record sales means we all want to know his views about everything on earth.

Shut up and sing.

On second thought, just shut up.

That's an apology? Not only is that not an apology but he then proceeds to slander President Bush.

From Wikipedia:

Benedetto was drafted into the United States Army in November 1944, during the final stages of World War II.[2][10] He did basic training at Fort Dix and Fort Robinson as part of becoming an infantry rifleman.[11] Benedetto ran afoul of a sergeant from the South who disliked the Italian from New York City and heavy doses of KP duty or BAR cleaning resulted.[11] Processed through the huge Le Havre replacement depot, in January 1945, he was assigned as a replacement infantryman to 255th Infantry Regiment of the 63rd Infantry Division, a unit filling in for the heavy losses suffered in the Battle of the Bulge.[12] He moved across France, and later, into Germany.[2] As March 1945 began, he joined the front line and what he would later describe as a "front-row seat in hell."[12]

So he wasn't actually in the Battle of the Bulge, but a sergeant was mean to him and he had KP had to clean rifles at Fort Dix. Pretty much the same thing.

Tony can shove it. He has been a Demonrat for years, supporting liberal politicians big time. He got turned off years ago in our house, and while I still listen some to Frank and Dean and Sammy, this has-been Bennett will NOT be played.

I’d refuse to buy his crap if I weren’t already on the “no to Tony Bennett” bandwagon.

His fake apology is happening merely because he got a call from his PR people, telling him it was a bad move. He said what he meant. He is obviously a rich non-thinking moron entertainer who fancies himself a sophisticate.

How do we know Bush wasn't saying he made a mistake inviting Tony to the festivities?

That seems like a much more plausible explanation for Bush's alleged admission!

At minimum pacifists are misguided, particularly when one such as Benedetto says, "[W]ar is the lowest form of human behavior."

Wrong. There are many forms of human behavior that are lower: appeasement, cowardice, collaboration, torture, genocide. Just wars such as Americans have fought for centuries are not in that category.

Again, I maintain that the glue from Benedetto's hairpiece penetrated the blood-brain barrier long ago.

Why do so many people believe that if someone has talent in one area, they must have something of value to add in a complete unrelated field?

Sadly Tony Islam begets violence as much as many of us hoped and prayed otherwise. Islam is what caused 911. Islam is evil and its cancer is trying to kill all that is good, right, and beautiful.

I really like the implied racism and the doubly implied Civil War riff in this sentence: "...from the South who disliked the Italian from New York City..."!! The idiot who added this little nugget is a real leftist, libtard!
