San Antonio Express News editor Rivard quits with liberal bias legacy tones
San Antonio Headlines Examiner ^ | September 20, 2011 | Jack Dennis

Robert Rivard, who has received criticism by many as leading the San Antonio Express-News (EN) toward a liberal bias, resigned today as editor. According to sources inside the newspaper, Rivard’s resignation was announced to them at a surprise meeting this afternoon. Rumors ran rampant throughout the Alamo City while officially, publisher Tom Stephenson indicated Rivard was going to pursue other endeavors. Readership circulation for the EN has been declining for years during Rivard’s tenure. NEWSPAPER READERSHIP DECLINING Recent EN circulation counts for Monday-Thursday readership was 133,480. This is down from 225,233 in 2007 and 239,000 in 2000, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. “I don’t sit around sucking my thumb about why the public doesn’t like us more,” Rivard, a native of Petoskey, Mich. once told journalism watcher Ellen Hume. “We’re contrarians. That’s why we got into this business.” “Rivard seemed to be set on a liberal agenda at the Express and News right smack in the middle of the home of Ft. Sam Houston, Randolph, Lackland, and Brooks,” said observer Richard Jordan. “San Antonio is referred to by many as Military City, USA and is not really a hot-bed for the most liberal minded readers." “I got the feeling he was much better at trying to control the opinion of San Antonio readers than he was at just reporting news,” Scott Bedford commented. “It got to the point the talk at the water cooler was not about the news, but about what liberal slant they (EN) were going to slap us up the side the head with next.” Readers became accustomed to EN endorsements to more liberal political candidates and causes, some note, “but it seemed to be escalating,” noted Bedford.

Strongly suggest parents and potential students look up their potential university/college of choice and look to see what the incoming freshman college reading is:

It’s been a poorly written rag for years. We stopped taking it 15 years ago, even without another local option. Depending on who replaces him, maybe I’ll give it another shot.

Maybe.

Reminds me just a little (and I mean JUST a little) of the downward spiral of the LA Daily News, which for about 25 years has been the (only) “other paper” in LA other than the arch-leftist Times. (What is the point, even as a business matter, of having both of a city’s two major papers be lefty?)

What I mean is: in 2004, the Daily News endorsed KERRY / EDWARDS. I immediately canceled my subscription — and it was obvious from the reaction of the subscriptions phone jockey with whom I spoke that SCORES of folks already had done so that very morning.

In the mid-90’s it was gay news and gay headlines just about every day. When Bush said he supported the Defense of Marriage act, the main headline, in doomsday type, said BUSH ATTACKS GAY MARRAIGE!

Front-page news about Gay picnics and Gay pride day and on and on. Articles in defense of teenagers accessing pornography. Pornography is good for you, new study claims. It just never ended. That’s when the paper really started losing readership and never regained it.

Even so I am surprised it’s down to 133,000 or so. But glad.

The SA Express News has been a crap paper for a long time and the makeup of the city council reflects the liberal bias of the paper. SA used to be a nice city, but the liberals on the city council are turning it into a liberal-regulated nightmare that regulates when and wher you can take a breath!!

The more of these leftist goons we can unload, the sooner this city might return to a charming and leading vacation destination in Texas.

I canceled my subscription to the EN when it was bought out by the San Antonio Light. That’s when it really started tilting more and more.
Can’t remember how many years ago that was.

The EN is a toilet on paper. I tell the goons outside HEB that try to shill it that I will buy it when they start reporting news instead of an agenda-they don’t get it.

The Sh*tty Council is a collection of political pygmys and mental midgets engaging in a circle jerk of creating self licking ice cream cones instead of dealing with what they need to.

The expression “World Class City’ means Turd world roads while they try to attract an NFL team to the clusterf*** Alamodome, banning smoking in bars and harassing strip clubs.

Jeesus, banning smoking in bars is like banning farting in bathrooms.

Just my rant for the day

As a High School student at Alamo Heights back in mid 60s I got up at 4 AM to roll and throw Express and News papers to about 300 homes, and then again in the afternoon for about half as many. Was a great gig for a 15/16 year old and it paid for my Vespa motor scooter. Sold subscriptions and did collections on late accounts. Taught me to work hard and how to sell. Seriously doubt any young kid could have the same opportunity today....too many regulations and laws protecting (disabling)them.

Before the Civil War, journalism was fractiously independent newspapers: by the turn of the century that was no longer the case. The thing that changed that was the telegraph - the telegraph, and the Associated Press.

The AP and "the wire" constituted a font of news stories from which the newspapers could choose. To be commercial successes, the newspapers needed the AP. And so they paid for it and, having paid for it, had to make good use of it. How do you use reports which came to you from afar, over this wire thingy, from reporters whom the editor of the local newspaper doesn't even know? Obviously, you need journalism to be considered a priesthood of trustworthiness in order to promote as reliable the writings of strangers. Hence, the "objective journalism" schtick.

Which is supported only by propaganda. But what propaganda!

Soooooo . . . . . . how do you REALLY feel about them? LOL!

Actually, I can't disagree with you. That's why I live in Atascosa County.

Lytle is just down the road from me. Nice little town. You could actually live there and commute, if you wanted. I used to commute to I-10 and Days of Allah. That’s before zero’s jobs program hit and I got laid off.
