The execution of Troy Davis was delayed temporarily by the US supreme court on Wednesday night in a dramatic intervention just as he was due to be put to death by lethal injection.
The last-minute decision caused confusion outside the prison in Jackson, Georgia, where family, supporters and civil rights campaigners broke into celebration as they believed the court had granted Davis a stay of execution.
But it quickly emerged that the delay was only temporary, while the justices considered whether to issue a stay.
Until that moment it seemed almost certain that Davis would be executed, as the Georgia supreme court had rejected a last-ditch appeal by Davis's lawyers over the 1989 murder of off-duty policeman Mark MacPhail, for which Davis had been sentenced to death despite overwhelming evidence that the conviction is unreliable.
A Butts County superior court judge had also declined to stop the execution.

GA prison official on Troy Davis: ‘We are in a delay, waiting for a decision from the US Supreme Court. There has not been a reprieve’
It seems like the Supreme Court always waits until after it has had dinner before considering these last minute appeals.
With everything else that is going on, I don’t have all the facts in this case, but it seems to me that if the court jumped in at the last second after initially denying his appeal, then something must be up.
not too quick here....
I’ve taken note of the stature of some who’ve argued for review.....not your typical wimps.
I’m researching to remind myself of who and when.
DOUCHEBAGS! How much longer must this family be made to suffer!!!
Enough is enough. Put him to death no matter what Ruth Bader Ginsberg says from now on.
For anyone who wants to understand the facts of this case here is Judge Moore’s order in which he painstakingly lays out the evidence including the supposed “recantations” offered up by the anti-death penalty lawyers:
I read a blog report that said it was Clarence Thomas who was conducting the review...
Is he dead yet?
TWITTER Comments on Justice Thomas:
Justice for Officer McPhail! Let’s get this done!
Unbelievably, I think it was Justice Thomas who asked for the delay.
He is guilty as hell. Bloody clothes found at his house were deemed inadmissible because the cops had no warrant. They said his mom gave permission to search the house. She later lied and denied she had allowed the search. There were 34 witnesses. Media lies to the contrary, only two really recanted their testimony and the murderer refused to let them take the stand, lest their lawyer written recantations be subject to cross examination. If this guy lives, it is an appalling miscarriage of justice.
A Kardashian suddenly worried about “justice”...
If only the Supreme Court was this fast when it came to protecting us from government force.
I’m okay if one of the Kardashians wants to trade places with Davis...
What is a Kardashian? Huh???
