U.S. Charges Bass Pro Shops with Racial Bias (Owner is Republican)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 9/22/11 | A Zimmerman

Bass Pro Shops have developed a devoted following by packing cavernous stores full of rods and reels, camping and hunting gear, camouflageclothingandanimal trophy-heads.

Behind the scenes, the retailer discriminates in hiring, the government said in a lawsuit filed Wednesday.

Among the allegations: Bass Pro managers repeatedly refused to hire non-white workers as clerks, cashiers or managers, and used discriminatory language to explain their reasoning, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which filed its suit in federal district court in Houston.

For instance, the government alleged a Bass Pro human-resources executive told federal investigators that the assistant ...

Robert Morris, I believe, is the founder and owner of Bass Pro Shops. He is a good friend of the Bush family, and a strong Republican.

Any wonder why Hussein is going after him with the race card?

Desperation.

Quote from the article:

“...For instance, the government alleged a Bass Pro human-resources executive told federal investigators that the assistant manager of a store in Louisiana rejected a qualified black candidate, saying “he really didn’t fit the company profile.” *When pressed, the store manager used a racial slur to say that the stores don’t hire blacks*, according to the complaint. “

If that’s true, then I have no issue with the investigation. That kind of thing shouldn’t be going on no matter what kind of store it is.

How many black people are hunting and fishing aficionados? If some are, and they apply to Bass Pro Shops, they ought to be considered fairly. And if they did but were not, shame on Bass Pro. But I think they want people knowledgeable in hunting and fishing, not just any old person who walks in the door.

Agreed; but I can not believe a Human Resource Executive would make that kind of statement to an investigator.

The issue should be whether or not the person is qualified to do the job.

If I owned a fishin’ shop and a black person applied, the issue would be simply whether or not they knew and understood the sport.

The person who is alleged to have said that may have said it to somebody undercover as a fish enthusiast.

I'm a middle-aged white guy. I doubt that Victoria Secret's would hire me to work on their floor selling lingerie. If I applied to work at some mall-store selling trendy teen clothing, they'd probably laugh me out of there. Don't think I'd be successful getting on the Hooter's waitstaff either.

None of the above is discriminatory in my opinion. I just don't fit the profile. On the other hand, I'd probably feel right at home selling rods and reels at the Pro shop.

My family camped for over a decade, and we still go to our lake house for boating and skiing. I can honestly say in all this time, I have never seen a single black family.
I think it’s more a component of culture than race. Maybe there’s a lawsuit against BET for excluding whites from their tv broadcast. How about black colleges or beauty pageants. I guess we all know it is only possible to be a racist if you’re white.

Consider the source - these are the same people that claim that those "millionaires and billionaires" don't pay as high a tax rate as a secretary.

I am witholding judgement here. There has to be more to this story, just like the Gibson Guitars story. Bass Pro is considering building a new superstore in Peoria, which means they would be hiring people. Something doesn’t smell right here.

No question it was a setup.

Somebody was busy looking for a payday and they found it.

it is Johnny Morris, and he is a smart business man and not a PC bone in his body

I know him personally and we use to be in the same Bass Club together before BPS got big

>>> If I owned a fishin’ shop and a black person applied, the issue would be simply whether or not they knew and understood the sport. >>>

That’s proof you don’t own one, because if you did, your ONLY issue would be will my customer base like this guy/girl and feel comfortable with them. And if your customer base is 99% white and three quarters of those have confederate flags on their pick up trucks, you might have a notion on just who fits your profile.

Meanwhile, if you owned a furniture rental store or urban music store, you’d have a different profile.

How about this for a radical liberty idea: business owners can hire whoever they want for whatever reason they want - and for those who don’t like who they hire - they are free to open their own businesses and hire who THEY want.

Ah. So one idiot statement qualifies an investigation of the whole company, eh? The presence of a moron doesn’t indicate racism. Otherwise, Hussein and Biden would have been behind bars years ago.

Sorry, but context is everything....under what circumstances was the word used, was it in addition to qualifications, etc. Racism is despicable, but the indictment of an entire business is a big deal, and I do not believe Hussein and his cabal are good judges of such matters.

This reeks of politically motivated targeting.

If you really believe in that so-rad idea of hiring who I want, then you shouldn’t have a problem with me owning a bass shop, in the deep south, serving those with confederate flags on their trucks, hiring whom I think would be an asset to the business, regardless of his skin colour.

That is, if you really believe that, as opposed to other possibilities, eh?

I don’t think it’s the government’s job to tell anybody whom t hire.

I think the marketplace will eventually work itself out to everybody’s satisfaction.

From what I understand, Bass Pro is intending...or WAS intending, to build a mega attraction in Peoria that would have brought much economic development into the area. It seems as if this administration is hellbent on PREVENTING ANY economic growth if it doesn’t involve either the unions or government. THIS stinks to high, high heaven.
