Scientists said on Thursday they recorded particles travelling faster than light - a finding that could overturn one of Einstein's fundamental laws of the universe.
Antonio Ereditato, spokesman for the international group of researchers, said that measurements taken over three years showed neutrinos pumped from CERN near Geneva to Gran Sasso in Italy had arrived 60 nanoseconds quicker than light would have done.
"We have high confidence in our results. We have checked and rechecked for anything that could have distorted our measurements but we found nothing," he said. "We now want colleagues to check them independently."

One question comes to mind: why didn't the neutrinos travel backwards in time? Or did they, adding to their speed?
Interesting article. As it turns out, they ordered the particles from Dominos, they did actually arrive that fast, but a teenaged driver killed a family of 4 getting them there. Sort of a mixed bag of results.
OH SURE ... but how does that effect Man Made Global Warming?
We only want Important stuff not this nano second BS
Scientists should do “Stuff to Save the Planet”
“We have high confidence in our results. We have checked and rechecked for anything that could have distorted our measurements but we found nothing,”
This from the guys who recently came up with this:
“There is a new measurement of the size of the proton and it turns out that protons are smaller than we thought they were.”
“We now want colleagues to check them independently.”
How do they do that without the same equipment?
Pizza On Time!
I heard you get faster delivery now because they FAX you the pizza.
The funny part is that it still tastes the same.
OMG, I’ve got to post this to FreeRepublic! Oh, wait...
Lol, that’s literally what went through my mind when I saw your thread.
Nice find. Very interesting. Thanks for posting. :-)
Heck, all you need is a radar gun and a cop wearing a protective suit made of unobtanium.
Call me a luddite, but Albert's mathematics have stood the test of many times (no pun intended).
So now we are made up of even less stuff than we thought.
amazing and wow ...
What I want to know is how did they ‘tag’ the neutrinos so that they could differentiate them from all the other neutrinos that are running laps around CERN?
Maybe it’s not the neutrinos that are going faster, it’s just that light has slowed down.
Well, there are plenty of cases in which particles can go faster than light, in the sense that in certain mediums, neutrinos can pass through without interaction while photons do not. Take for instance a neutrino leaving the core of the Sun. The neutrino will leave the photosphere of the Sun before the light energy from the core will. Why? The neutrino will hardly interact, if at all, with any of the matter within the Sun’s interior, while the light will get absorbed and re-emitted. I will assume that this article is referring to the speed of light in a vacuum, however, and feel that that is probably an improvement. However, I would like to hear on the news if we can ever develop some way of moving matter through hyperspace, or something of the sort, so that we can go faster than light and visit other Stars. But then again, that’s my sci-fi/fantasy section of my brain running again!
Guess I can skip that diet I was on.
Looks like these Neutrinos traveled about 6,000 meters a second faster than light. I wonder if they could tell which direction time flows with these particles?
Heck, we Americans new way back in the early seventies that those new Torinos were fast.
I wish Ford hadn’t quit making them.
According to theory, those neutrinos should have had infinite mass at 100% of light speed. (Or, do neutrinos have mass? I dunno...) That they did not, obviously, means someone is going to have to do some hugh and series number crunching.
Something else to consider: If we can break light speed, that means that the stars, and all those fat juicy planets we can pillage, aren't as out of reach as we thought. I'm not saying to pack a bag, but...
How amateurish of them.
True professionals would say "the science is settled."
“protons are smaller than we thought they were”
I told my little brother for years that Roger Ramjet was a fraud, but he didn’t believe me.
I tend to believe that anything we can ‘imagine’ can become possible. It is what I believe God meant when he said we were created in his own ‘image’. That which he imagined, he made ‘real’. We have the same ‘power’. Most everything around you was a thought in someone’s mind, and eventually they made it ‘real’. Cars, plastic, your home, your glasses. All ‘created’ by man.
If our species exists long enough, I believe it is possible that we may find a way to travel distances now thought ‘impossible’. It may end up that our physical bodies cannot make the trip, but our ‘minds’ can.
Which would only indicate the human perception of the passage of time. I doubt the particles even notice.
Details, details. ;’)
Thanks for the ping. I would have posted on this development if someone else had not. Fascinating.
If they’d arrived *after* light, they’re called neutrinos — since they didn’t, they must be oldtrinos.
I had a friend whose family loved that model of Ford.
Nice segue’, maybe you don’t realize it yet, but your future self will.
I am willing to believe that yes, our souls are immortal and can reach places that even we cannot. But I believe that now, we’re simply in a setback from our true potential in terms of space travel. I think that it’s most certainly possible that we can build functioning stations on the moon, make trips to Mars, and so on, it’s all a matter of finding the right developments, which I don’t think are entirely impossible, I just feel that we are having setbacks right now, due to various issues on Earth that are holding us back. But I do feel, that there can be greater leaps made in the future to come.
A court even higher than the Supremes?
Thank you for the fond memories. Now that song will be reverberating through my head all night.
Isn’t human memory an amazing thing. I haven’t seen that cartoon since I was a kid, yet I know the song by heart.
All my science fiction story dreams come true.
Photons have no mass either, and are of course restrained by light speed.
If there are other 'similar' intelligent life forms on other 'habitable' planets, then maybe the setbacks are even part of God's plan.
Maybe we just aren't ready to encounter the other 'rooms' in God's house.
For the most part, the humans on this planet still act like spoiled children who hit other children for playing with their toys.
I’ve always wondered if that’s how angels traversed vast distances and time, i.e., by exploiting some quantum vector.
It’s either measurement error or we’ll need quantum correction to general relativity (but everyone was expecting to need quantum corrections to GR anyway).
And still no Higgs boson . . .
I knew those proton pills weren’t all that. ;^)
Roger the Pill-popper.
Only the ones you have seen.
Maybe angels have no mass.
Not so fast! Serendipity. A lot of stuff was invented purely by accident, while the creators were unsuccessfully trying to create the stuff of their dreams. Post-it notes, as I recall came about from failed attempts to market a strong reusable glue. Years later a colleague accidentally stumbled across a use while gluing a bookmark in his hymnbook. Things that make you go "hymn..."
Well, yeah, *rest* mass; on the other side, neutrinos aren’t either fully massless for every definition of mass - gotta check that, I don’t have the exact figures right here.
See “Cherenkov Radiation”. High speed particles regularly enter the earths atmosphere at superluminal speeds. That is, they exceed the speed of light in that particular medium. This experiment seems to show superluminal speeds in a vacuum. Bad boys, breaking the law.. Would be a huge finding if duplicated, although I suspect an explanation will be found that does not upset Einstein.
That's covered under the 'Sh*t Happens' clause. Still, without the 'mind' of man attempting to 'create', post-it notes would never have been a reality.
P.S. Mostly it is due to the fact that we are ‘imperfect’ creators, and only GOD is a PERFECT CREATOR.
