Republican Gay Rights Group Demands Apology from Santorum
CBS News ^ | September 23, 2011 | Lucy Madison

Posted on 09/23/2011 10:01:23 AM PDT by lbryce

Members of the conservative gay rights group GOProud are demanding an apology from Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum for what they call his disrespectful comments directed at a gay soldier in Thursday night's GOP presidential debate.

"Tonight, Rick Santorum disrespected our brave men and women in uniform, and he owes Stephen Hill, the gay soldier who asked him the question about Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal, an immediate apology," said GOProud's Christopher Barron and Jimmy LaSalvia in a Thursday night press release.

During the Fox News/Google-sponsored debate, which took place in Orlando, Florida, a gay soldier deployed in Iraq asked the candidates if they would take measures to "circumvent" the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," if elected president.

Some audience members audibly booed the soldier -- a moment the GOP candidates on stage chose to ignore.

GOProud also noted that Santorum, who answered the question, declined to thank the soldier for his service, and called the repeal of DADT "social experimentation" - and "tragic."

"I would say any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military," Santorum responded. "And the fact that they're making a point to include it as a provision within the military that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege to -- and removing 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' I think tries to inject social policy into the military. And the military's job is to do one thing, and that is to defend our country."

I never could understand the political concept of "gay republican" other than that of being an oxymoron. There have been those like Andrew Breibart, Ann Coulter who've come to look upon gay republicans no different than others who've taken up the banner in support of the Republican agenda, Republican values.

The fact is, there can be no accomodation with gays who profess the Republican agenda, because being gay, living the gay life, indulgent in the abomination, perversion, deviancy that is homosexuality, renders their political affiliation, affinity for the Republican agenda makes any reference to themselves as Republicans moot, makes a mockery of Republican life-style, values, as irreconcilable anathema to all things Republican. And now we witness the surreal, where Republican gay right groups demand an apology as if they would ever deserve one,as if they are true legitimate Republicans, which they definitely are not. I say to them, get your damn as*es right on outta here, do you hear??

The problem isn’t homosexual conservatives but homosexual “conservatives” that form a lobby group and infiltrate in order to push their agenda.

I didn’t have a problem with his answer, though I probably would have thanked the solider for his service.

Gay or not, the dude is putting his life on the line. He just needs to keep his sexuality to himself.

The horrendous CRISIS that we now find ourselves in is not merely economic. It has been growing for many years. Our present-day culture is the product of ignoring God and trampling morality.

Personally, I do not expect to see any real solution to the crisis until the root causes are addressed...by all of us.

This is why republicans shouldn't "reach out' to any particular group - once you start down that path you'll inevitably end up where the democrats are today.

The individual American is the only morally appropriate constituency.

It doesn’t appear to me that Santorum said anything impolite, personal, or defamatory. He simply stated his position on the political issue under discussion.

If he apologizes, he’ll be a useless, cringing ninny.

I gave blood the other day. The guy who asked Santorum that question the other day would not have been able to.

Hey...you don’t like what he said, don’t vote for him. Meanwhile, you’re in no position to “demand” anything.

Obama uses everything he can to “speak” to the voters; and minority special interest groups use a speech to scream their hysterical demands. Rick Santorum handled his question very well.n And he is right.

I guess that means that Santorum will not get the 900 gay votes the Republican candidate would normally get in the general election. (if that many)

Right on! I completely agree with this.

Govt. divides us by pitting us against each other and favoring one group over another, thereby leading to resentment and discord among "groups".

What is outrageous?

That a gay soldier was booed? Or that GOP Proud is making noise about it?

Look at this thread. Shoot. Look at the one we’re on now.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2782556/posts

Lots of FReepers support the gay soldier and are appalled at the booing. Lots of FReepers think the booing was justified.

So. What is outrageous???
