So then you’d have double or triple the amount of junk falling? Yeah good plan. :)

I'm reminded of one of my favorite shows ...

Northern Exposure

Summary: The infamous O'Connell curse seems to have claimed another victim when a falling satellite hits Rick. The funeral scene was hilarious with antenna sticking out all over the coffin.

This satellite will probably injure or kill more people when it crashes to Earth than the so called depletion of the Ozone layer it was launched to study.

Drag alone is not enough to determine impact speed. Weight is important, too.

Drag alone is enough to determine impact speed. Drag specifically counteracts the accelleration of gravity and in effect sets a limit on speed in a steady state environment. The atmosphere isn't really steady state as it gets more dense (more drag) closer to the surface.

Everything being equal though, aerodynamic drag is the limiting factor for an object falling freely, of which this event is a pretty good case of.

Weight as you note (more accurately density) does play a role as the more dense an object is the less surface area there likely is to create aerodynamic drag resulting in a higher velocity before drag = acceleration of gravity resulting in a higher terminal velocity.

So then you’d have double or triple the amount of junk falling?

In pieces so tiny they would not survive reentry intact. They would disperse so widely as to be inconsequential.

Yeah good plan. :)

I thought so. It beats letting big chunks fall where they will.

LOL. A specific whale or just any whale?

My wife was telling me about a conversation with one of her seventh graders about whale poop today (as in, how much is in the ocean). A direct hit would probably increase that amount for a short while.

I think the +4 after the GMT time is the time zone you have add to get local time. 4:49am GMT +4 hours is 8:49am local time.

Example of ORSAT used in predicting the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) spacecraft reentry breakup. Demise altitude vs. downrange evaluated for nearly all of the UARS components.

Let’s say you are flying arong the planet, in a decaying orbit. Further suppose thar your - um - appendage in hanging out the window.

Imagine the factors that affect when the thing burns off - is the window up or down? Which way is the wind blowing, relative to your velocity? What is the shrinkage factor?

You see, this really IS rocket science.

And it ain’t easy. No weather baloons up there.

Oh, oh, OK. Gotcha.

Local news here in Seattle is saying it might be visible about 9:30 PM local time, which, coincidentally sounds like about the time it’s expected to hit!

I guess that translates to 2 more orbits.

With billions of dollars invested in supercomputers and billions invested in every type of PHD, these overpaid clowns guess that it might possibly land SOMEWHERE. I would suspect, given the equipment and data from NASA, several high school geniuses could do a better and more exacting prediction. I predict NASA will alter their prediction, after the space craft crashes, to show that they predicted it.

To: Liberty Valance; All

One night I went outside to watch a meteor shower. I was seeing about 3-4 a minute.

Then, I saw a very, very bright light that appeared in the sky and faded away quickly.

I finally figured out it was indeed a meteor.

A meteor that was coming STRAIGHT AT ME!!!

So if you look up tonight and see a very bright light that has no apparent motion in the sky, it’s probably a good sized chunk of the satellite. And it’s coming directly towards you!

GET OUT OF THE WAY!!
It might be a good idea to like have your car keys close or something!!

;-)

Orbital Decay - Altitude Prediction Graph

The prediction graph is a plot of perigee & apogee over time (thus dual lines) actual altitude oscillates 16 times per day. There are three pairs of lines, the original prediction pair, the revised prediction (f=1.5) and the actual observed.
