Obama Administration to Ban Asthma Inhalers Over Environmental Concerns

Obama Administration to Ban Asthma Inhalers Over Environmental Concerns 3:00 PM, Sep 23, 2011 • By MARK HEMINGWAY Single Page Print Larger Text Smaller Text Alerts

Remember how Obama recently waived new ozone regulations at the EPA because they were too costly? Well, it seems that the Obama administration is would rather make people with Asthma cough up money than let them make a surely inconsequential contribution to depleting the ozone layer:

Asthma patients who rely on over-the-counter inhalers will need to switch to prescription-only alternatives as part of the federal government's latest attempt to protect the Earth's atmosphere.

The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday patients who use the epinephrine inhalers to treat mild asthma will need to switch by Dec. 31 to other types that do not contain chlorofluorocarbons, an aerosol substance once found in a variety of spray products.

The action is part of an agreement signed by the U.S. and other nations to stop using substances that deplete the ozone layer, a region in the atmosphere that helps block harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun.

But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, range from $30 to $60.

The Atlantic's Megan McArdle, an asthma sufferer, noted a while back that when consumers are forced to deal with environmentally friendly products they're are almost always worse:

Ok, I am out of town, forgot my inhalator, having a mild attack but have to find a doctor who does not know me or my history to get a scrip for an expensive inhalator rather than getting one at the drug store.
These people in the obama admin and crazy.

A black man, a communist, a Muslim, and an illegal alien walk into a bar.

The bartender says: "What can I get you Mr. President?"

I dunno, seems appropriate. Everything else is clearly going to Hell. Happy Friday!

You should see the price of Primatene mist inhalers on eBay and the like. For the past 6 months the prices have been skyrocketing...when you can find them. People with Asthma are panicking...and they are pissed.

I dont care for Primatene but when I forget my inhaler...? its a lifesaver. Now there is no rescue around the corner.

I would imagine we will begin hearing about the uptick in emergency room visits for folks who would have otherwise just gone to Walgreens and purchased a 20 Primatene.

And they cant imagine why healthcare costs keep going up.

Do you know who’s going to be hardest hit? Women and minorities:

In 2009, about 2,380,000 African Americans reported that they currently have asthma.
African American women were 30% more likely to have asthma than non-Hispanic White women, from 2001-2003.
In 2007, African Americans were three times more likely to die from asthma related causes than the White population.

Obama is an ignoramus, but even ignoramuses can pick sound advisers. This guy has ignoramuses for advisers too, and those ignoramus advisers consult with other ignoramuses who haven’t ever held a job in the private sector, and don’t have clue one to real world existence.

They live in a dream world, dreaming dreams embedded in dreams embedded in nightmares (for us).

I have asthma that has been brought completely under control by using Pulmicort. I haven’t needed my rescue inhaler in more than 3 years but my doctor still prescribes albuterol just in case. With health insurance it runs me about $18 per canister.

Only the dimmist of morons could possibly believe that little "pfffts" from inhalers could harm the environment. Who are they kidding?

But there's also this:

But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, range from $30 to $60.

A look at any money trails sourced from the maker of albutrol might be revealing.

I have asthma that has been brought completely under control by using Pulmicort.

My asthma at one time was completely under control, thanks to Serevent Inhaler. Then they took the inhaled version off the market (to save the ozone layer) and replaced it with a dry powder piece of crap that you literally have to suck into your lungs. It's only about half as effective as the inhaled version. I now rely much more frequently on my albuterol inhaler, but even that has been rendered less effective by the elimination of CFCs as a propellent.

When they take over the ‘drug making’ we’ll really have problems.

Look what they did to colchicine - Before Obama it was a 10 cent pill. Now it's >$5. It was a 100 year old drug from a plant that is a miracle for millions of gout sufferers.

For me and many others it will ward off a painful gout attack. Usually takes about three pills spaced a few hours apart at the first sign of an attack.

Unfortunately, this type of stupidity is nothing new. During the Clinton administration, the allergy nose spray I used was banned in the US. My allergist got a good laugh over the fact that the drug was still being manufactured, but it was now only possible to get it in developing nations. All the replacements gave me nose bleeds and I ended up, at the age of 10, needing to take steroids to clear up the sinus infection that resulted. I missed weeks of school and seriously doubt the ozone is any better for it. It would be nice if at some point the administration prioritized the health of its citizens over a useless international agreement, but that’s never going to happen under this administration.

LOL! I had forgotten that. That’s why Obama is going after them.

Actually, I didn’t know that there were inhalers that only contained epinephrine.

Adavair seems to be the new drug of choice for asthma sufferers, maybe the makers of Adavair made a deal with someone in the Obama administration.
