NASA satellite falls on Canada as space junk. No one hurt. (Near Calgary)

The 6-ton UARS satellite — the biggest piece of space debris to fall from the sky since Sky Lab in 1979 — fell back to Earth early Saturday morning. Debris is reported to have been found near Calgary, Canada.

The wait is over. NASA's bus-sized Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) has fallen, becoming the largest runaway chunk of space junk to drop back down to Earth since two satellites, including the behemoth Sky Lab, punched the atmosphere in 1979.

"We can now confirm that #UARS is down!" reported the official NASA Twitter account. "Debris fell to Earth between 11:23 p.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 23, and 1:09 a.m. EDT Sept. 24."

The satellite, broken up into 26 titanium and other hard alloy pieces expected to survive the fiery descent, reportedly fell at least partly on land. Twitter and YouTube reports pinpointed landfall in Okotoks, Canada, near Calgary.

You could play crash-derby ping-pong with many of the cars on road now in that thing. Probably wouldn't even feel the tin cans bouncing off. Knowing you already need a paint job helps with the unsticking later from what I understand. :)

That car is long gone. I ended up selling it for a hundred bucks!

Briefly had a puke-green, probably the same color, Dodge Dart. Ended up donating it.

Maggie and I were pretty close at one time, but I dumped her for that very reason.

Big rock is also a local beer here in Calgary, as you undoubtedly know.
And a fine one!

Cheers,

I was following the story because I want to see a damn satellite burn up over my head! I have been under two now, but didn’t see either. (Indoors both times, and I didn’t know about it beforehand.) Was asleep once, and awake for the other. I would have only had to step outside, dang it. But, this one went down far, far away.

Will Canada retaliate against the US for this ballistic missile attack?

Ah yes, why I remember back in the day when Ford & Chrysler were considering a joint venture for a new convertible. It was a combination of the Valiant and the Comet. It was called the Vomet. It had a throw up top and bucket seats.

Thanks for this post.

I was outside and a little North of you (San Juan Islands) enjoying the unusually warm evening about 9:40 and observed what I believed to be a satellite heading in a southerly direction. Viewing a satellite on a clear night is not unusual up here, but this one suddenly flared into a bright red color continuing its southernly orbit. I mentioned the viewing to my wife who immediately informed me that I was "seeing things". Good to get some verification, 'tho she still feels I am "certifiable".

It’s done because 90% of Americans are dimwits when it comes to Canada. It’s embarrassing.

LOL!

I understand the actress that played Maggie - Janine Turner http://www.janineturner.com/journey.html - is quite conservative.

She is a real patriot.
