Posted on 09/25/2011 2:22:17 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife
....What's going on?
"The desire to disbelieve deepens as the scale of the threat grows," concludes economist-ethicist Clive Hamilton.
He and others who track what they call "denialism" find that its nature is changing in America, last redoubt of climate naysayers. It has taken on a more partisan, ideological tone. Polls find a widening Republican-Democrat gap on climate. Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry even accuses climate scientists of lying for money. Global warming looms as a debatable question in yet another U.S. election campaign.
From his big-windowed office overlooking the wooded campus of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y., Broecker has observed this deepening of the desire to disbelieve.
"The opposition by the Republicans has gotten stronger and stronger," the 79-year-old "grandfather of climate science" said in an interview. "But, of course, the push by the Democrats has become stronger and stronger, and as it has become a more important issue, it has become more polarized."
The solution: "Eventually it'll become damned clear that the Earth is warming and the warming is beyond anything we have experienced in millions of years, and people will have to admit..." He stopped and laughed.
"Well, I suppose they could say God is burning us up."

Environmentalists have, are and will continue to lie for money -- for power and control. And they've been very successful. However their "brand" has been bruised so they've slowly begun transitioning to using the terms "conservation" and "conservationists" -- so don't be fooled (conservation has long been the CORRECT term to describe mankind's proper interface with our world -- so now the "greens" need to snatch it).
Even graduate students and post docs know to keep their opinions to themselves (a growing chorus of distinguished and renowned scientists are giving an informed rebuttal to the lies of global warming "science" in efforts to inform the world of this hoax). Companies and businesses bullied for years by "green" terrorists and the "green"education movement, pay "hostage" money to keep the environmentalist off their backs and fashion their advertising and products to draw in "brainwashed" green customers.
Solyndra "green" solar panel execs are in the headlines (well maybe in "Section B" of the news, because the SEJ -- Society of Environmental Journalists write the copy for so many news agencies) plead the 5th as they "loose" $500,000,000 of tax payer money -- handed to them by President Obama. Sixties radicals have churned out a marching army of "green"graduates ready to make free-market capitalism pay and reform.
There is a renewed push from the warmists on the Left, to alert listeners and viewers that "deniers" and "contraians" (Jim Hansen likes that term) must be refused a seat at the discussion table because their opinions are so wrong they are putting the world in irreversible danger by confusing the public. Many churches have adopted and incorporated "save Mother Earth" and "Creation Care" policies into their religious teachings. The EPA has been given the "green light" to overrule Congress on what and how environmental policy will be deemed lawful and unlawful -- who you can hire, where you can hire, what you can make and what you can sell. And you will pay dearly if you disobey.
The Left is using religion as their "understood" meme that people of faith don't believe in science and thus are dangerous.
This Left is formulating this distinction and divide to label conservatives as enemies of the state.

You want to be in harmony with nature. Go harmonize.-John Clark to the environazis in Rainbow Six
America, last redoubt of climate naysayers
Not long ago I had to do some research into captiol punishment (I'm against it, btw, so you know I'm not cooking the data), in response to the usual "civilized nations don't have it" crud from some Europeans. I presented them with the history of how Europe came to be 'against' executions, and how it was clear that in many cases if not most, executions were outlawed not in response to the people's wishes but in spite of them. (Now that this has been the law for the lifetimes of many voters, of course, it's a moot point.)
I think of this when I see how the MSM rush to defend the Global Warming position. One of their biggest tactics, of course, is to blend the idea of natural warming with the idea of man-made warming--thus, the 'deniers' are denying the sun is hot, for example.
I mention all of this to show that the MSM/leftists will always, always, always point to other GOVERNMENTS as proof of compliance with a certain point of view. Eleanor Clift and Chris Matthews not only don't know, they don't care what European CITIZENS think about this, or the lack of information in many countries, the lack of free expression, the very obvious bullying that goes on in the sciences, and many other factors. They Just Know, and look, these leftist GOVERNMENTS agree with them, so case closed.
The truth is a lot harder to uncover. I'm not saying the truth is that Europeans or others would agree with our point of view about this topic, only that we don't even know if they have the variety of information needed to come to their own conclusions. This doesn't even factor in the European history of not wanting to rock the government's boar--I'm often startled by how willing some Europeans are to simply believe the government all the time.
It's not about being anti-government or anti-science, it's about the truth of what people really think is very hard to find, and the newspapers seem to know this and bank on it when pushing their agendas.
Your post from the pulled thread:
You know, I think weve always been on the brink.
But the headline on the 1975 report was bold: "Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming?"
Time Magazine, 1974.
Rick Perry supports science-based health prevention, stem cell research, and environmental regulations by balancing one set of estimates with the impact they can have on human well-being. If that approach meshes with his "theological and ideological worldview," I'm all for repeating early and often.
South40-LOL! I KNEW I wasn't crazy recalling "global cooling" from the era of "Chariots of the Gods?" and "Charlie's Angels"!
I should have known. It was my fault it was pulled. I had it all edited and ready to go but the CBS link allowed the full piece (it was AP but still didn’t register as it is so blatantly a propaganda piece).
I put back all the posts I still had in another window. Hope I got them all.
I’m looking for an article that your comments reminded me of. If I find it I’ll post it to the thread.
In Donald Gibson, Battling Wall Street: The Kennedy Presidency (1994), it's revealed modern Malthusians and extreme conservationists opposed Kennedy's call for technology to improve the standard of living.
Do we not recall Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) thanks to which we now proudly kill a million children each year needlessly banning DDT.
Ice cores show us near the end of an inter-ice-age cycle, if anything, cooling back again.
When we ought to push for plentiful and cheap energy to provide clean water and sanitary living conditions for all, when our agricultural professionals (farmers and scientists together) can feed all of us better and better, why do the oppressors seek to demoralize us.
The drumbeat of climate change is nothing we didn't hear from Cotton Mather in Salem, Massachusetts in 1620, or in the star chamber of the Spanish Inquisition.
Climate propaganda coming from those who cannot reliably predict tomorrow's weather or next week's hurricane is nothing but a knife to our throat demanding our wallet and our watch.
We are ending the reign of the shrieking fairies and carping harpies of media and academe, of Hollywood and pop culture.
The Night of the Living Dead is ending.
When the sun comes up next November we'll all step over the striped leggings poking out from under the fallen house and move on down the road.
Seems like too many Americans have taken up with Chicken Little.
AGW is a golden goose for the left, which now consist of hard core Marxist, and or, touchy-feely morons, aka, leftist Democrats.
Their victims are naive kids under the age of 30, and other assorted individuals that have no clue about weather, much less climate.
When you are in a discussion about AGW, you can pretty well shut the neo-AGW believers up when you ask about the “MWP”, followed by the “little ice age”.
Most of them, of course, have no clue as to what you are talking about.
Try it sometime.
It is lots of fun to flummox the idiots.
Democrats Unveil the Weapon of the Future ".............This is an extraordinary series of events, of a type that we haven't witnessed before. Even more singular is the legacy media's insistence on covering the story (with the exception of the siege of Madison, which got the standard "unions unbound" treatment) as if it were commonplace to the point of boredom. It is no such thing; it is an ideological campaign of a magnitude and breadth that we have not seen in quite some time, if ever.
What all this amounts to is the baptism of fire of what I have taken to calling the "liberal superstructure." This superstructure is the vast constellation of advocacy groups, think tanks, single-issue outfits, unions, and various other flotsam constructed by the left over the past half-century or so. There are literally thousands of these groups, ranging from the ACLU and the Sierra Club with their hundreds of thousands of members to the local "Friends of the People's Venezuela" outfit which amounts to a retired feminism professor and her six cats. These organizations are ubiquitous, universal, and networked to a fare-thee- well. They are also liberalism's last great hope of controlling politics in the United States.
It's scarcely arguable that, in the political sense, liberalism is on the ropes. Obama spent their last nickel. They have lost the House and will lose the Senate, with little chance of regaining them in the near future. The same is true of the White House once the messiah gets the bum's rush come 2012. Liberalism is on the skids, its programs uniform failures, its ideology barren, its slogans worn out, its long hold on the independents being relentlessly pared down by the Tea Parties
Keep bringing it up! The Left demonizes the Tea Party/conservatives because they DON'T WANT people to listen, to consider their opinions and words (they make too much sense) -- You must be ignored and shunned because you're stupid, "religious," racist and greedy. [And anyone who takes up with "them" will be similarly labeled, so don't go there]
“Your post from the pulled thead:”
Mr. McKinnon was outraged. "No pretense of integrity, professionalism or of unbiased news gathering," he wrote in Investors' Business Daily.
But I doubt he was surprised. This is what the "mainstream" media did to Sarah Palin in 2008, and what likely is in store for anyone Republicans nominate.
But liberals will go after the Texas governor with special venom because he is anti- intellectual, prays in public, takes the Constitution seriously and sometimes carries a handgun, Walter Shapiro wrote in The New Republic.
"It's almost as if Perry's political persona was constructed by bundling together all the fears and phantoms in the left-wing anxiety closet." he said.
A Deep Faith in What's Been Proved (Obama by the numbers - Perry by faith) "............The divide between the empiricists and the believers is also the fault line between the highly educated, technologically adept super-elite and the squeezed and scared middle class. But those hoi polloi voters, who, in 2012, as they were in 2008, seem to be drawn to politicians with big ideas and strong beliefs, may also be responding to something even bigger than this cognitive divide.
We are today, as we were in 2008, living through an unprecedented crisis. The economies of the Western world are sick, and the international balance of power is shifting. To be driven by data is an admirable thing. But when you find yourself in dangerous and uncharted waters, there is no data to guide you.........."
“Keep bringing it up!”
Well, of course, but most idiot voters have no idea about climate, and listen only to the MSM telling them that we are all gonna die because of man’s evil lifestyles.
While I was in Slovakia, working as an English conversation tutor in businesses and banks, I had a lot of fun using the
“Gorebal” warming topic.
Cohen doesnt hold a very high opinion of the Texas governor, of anyone who doesnt buy into the notion of a looming global man-made global warming disaster, or of Republicans. Referring to Perry in an Aug. 22 Washington Post article, he opined Its not his thinking I fear, its the lack of any at all.
Cohen observed that [Perry] occupies the cultural and intellectually empty heartland of the Republican party. The article scorned Perry for publicly stating that he stood with an increasing number of scientists who have challenged the existence of man-made global warming threats, commenting whoever they (italics noted) might be. In Appleton, Wis., Sen. Joe McCarthys skeleton rattled a bit. His reference to McCarthy went on to elaborate that The late and hardly lamented demagogue pioneered the use of the concocted statistic in suggesting that communists were literally everywhere. He further amplified There were some, of course, just as there are some scientists who are global warming skeptics, but these few about 2% of climate researchers could hold their annual meeting in a phone booth, if there are any left. (Perhaps 2% of scientists think they are).
This would require a pretty big phone booth,.....
Since 2007 more than 31,000 American scientists from diverse climate-related disciplines, including more than 9,000 with Ph.D.s, have signed a public petition announcing their belief that
there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause...
Priceless! And so effective.
The heat is cutting into wheat yields,
BS. What messed up wheat farming this year, at least here, was the flooding. Not from rainfall, so much, but from last winter's record snowfall melting (Well, I guess that involves heat--we call it Spring).
An awful lot of farmland was flooded out from the Dakotas on down the Missouri and Mississippi, and in the Durum belt up by Minot, ND.
Some of that cropland stayed under water well into August. (Give the Corps of Engineers a hat tip, too, they 'managed' the rivers.
As for extra CO2 in the seas, plants use it to make extra phytoplankton, and critters will use it to create shells of CaCO3 (calcium carbonate).
As limestone layers full of shells around the world will attest, this probably isn't the first time, but we have yet to find a fossil SUV.
But the bottom line is one of whether mankind's future is scratching out a bare and sometimes failing existence among small clusters of mud huts, or whether we will continue to survive as a species by using the technical capabilities we have.
If and when God wants to step in and end the world as we know it, I have a distinct feeling that it will be done in a singularly unambiguous manner, one which will not rely on cooked data sets to try to prove minute incremental warming.
Are you familiar with Lysenko?
The current count is 31,487 American Scientists who are opposed to Kyoto-like treaties. Hardly "settled science", and a wee bit shy of an AGW consensus.
In Texas Schools, Perry Shuns Federal Influence "When Secretary of Education Arne Duncan jabbed Mr. Perry on public schools in mid-August, it was only the latest skirmish between the governor and the Obama administration since late 2009, when Mr. Perry announced that the state would not sign on to common core-curriculum standards."...
Rick Perry is fighting the EPA regulation overreach. Texas and was the only state to not accept terms.
Rick Perrys Air War (with the EPA)......."Texas alone opted for the unfriendly approach. Its the only state that did not issue a plan for complianceand Perry has made it clear that Texas has no intention of complying. The move was a blatant slap to the Obama administrationand once again gave Perry the national spotlight. Defying the climate rules offered him the perfect opportunity to loudly decry the science of global warmingwhich in his book Fed Up! he calls a contrived phony mess that is falling apart under its own weightand to slam EPA as a rogue agency with an activist mind-set that has targeted Texas. Such rhetoric is viral catnip to the tea party voters who could help catapult Perry to the 2012 presidential nomination."....
Trial lawyers have painted a target on Rick Perry's back (lawsuit abuse reforms and "loser pays" have become a hallmark of Texas economic success).
Trial lawyers prep for war on Perry Americas trial lawyers are getting ready to make the case against one of their biggest targets in years: Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Among litigators, there is no presidential candidate who inspires the same level of hatred and fear as Perry, an avowed opponent of the plaintiffs bar who has presided over several rounds of tort reform as governor.
And if Perry ends up as the Republican nominee for president, deep-pocketed trial lawyers intend to play a central role in the campaign to defeat him.
Thats a potential financial boon to a president who has unsettled trial lawyers with his own rhetorical gestures in the direction of tort reform. A general election pitting Barack Obama and Perry could turn otherwise apathetic trial lawyers into a phalanx of pro-Obama bundlers and super PAC donors.
We could have the same here, if we just burn enough ethanol...
The fraud is subtly different, but the results would be similar. Only here, if such happens, in the name of the holy grail of CO2 emission reduction, people will also freeze to death in their homes and die from the heat in summer, and that's just the beginning.
I have a Mexican (one who refuses to assimilate to American way of life nor speak our language even though they can) living next door. Yesterday, I noticed a clear bag of water hanging from her patio ceiling.
Curiosity got the best of me so I researched the internet for an answer and found that it was a Latino belief if you hung a bag of water with a penny inside, the flies and mosquitoes would go away. This woman has some really strange religious visions and sightings on a regular basis.
Why do I post this? She is the “poster child” for the Democrat voter. She can be fooled, or scared, into believing anything told to her without question. This is the type of mentality that is forcing the belief of Global Warming or any other conjured up “SCARE” or stupid belief that is foisted upon them.
Consequently, they vote Democrat to save their own skins from these horrible specters that confront them each time they watch ABC, NBC, CBS and other liberal “scare” channels.
“You’re just afraid I’m right.” It was a great argument in junior high.
Thank goodness some other people recognize this pattern.
Lysenko was given free reign of terror over “wrong science thinking” and imprisoned and executed scientists who stood in opposition to his crank agrarian theories. And millions died. And his theory was picked up by other countries and it took decades for this to be “discredited.”
Lefitists [now warmists] recognized it for the useful tool it was and adopted it [environmentalism-green-climate disruption] as their new “friendly face” after communism was “defeated.”
Recognizing the pattern is inescapable if you know history.
THE END OF THE WORLD IS UPON US!
If a fly cant relax, it goes elsewhere. Or something like that.
Ive seen a few flies, he said, standing outside the restaurant, but compared to last year its almost 100 percent effective.
Ahmad said he got the idea during a trip to New York some time back, when he encountered big, water-filled bag fly barriers over the doorways of a Chinese restaurant.
Doorways, for whatever reason, seem important to the fly-repellent principle. "..........
Vote Democrat! -- and save yourselves from right-wing religious nuts who are destroying the world. /sarcasm
It is an inescapable conclusion if not interrupted. I have much at stake. I am a signer of the petition. I am on 'the list', so to speak, and so many others, if it comes to that.
I come from a family of people who have been careful stewards of their land for 370 years, and are still farming part of that land grant.
Needless to say, the Federal (and other levels of) government have made it increasingly difficult for those members of my family still there to do so.
In the book, Dezinformatzia (search here for an inexpensive copy, if you don't have one), it was noted that some of the seed money for the budding environmental movement in the '60s and '70s came from KGB sources, with the express purpose of disrupting and damaging Western Industrial capability.
I have long thought the collapse of the USSR was a convenient rebranding of the system there, and Communism has never been so healthy as it has been after it was declared 'dead'.
The same jealous eyes hunger for paybacks and power.
Lysenko enough for you?
Speaking of history, I was thinking of the same thing when reading this article about global warming. The world has been heating up and cooling off for centuries. After all, if it wasn't for the earth heating up, wouldn't we still be in the ice age? And there was a period when the climate was so warm they were growing vineyards in England.
It is possible (but I doubt it) the world may be heating up. But this science is built upon bias, conjecture, and where the liberals have invested their money.
Obama's Science and Technology adviser, John P. Holdren, came out of the Sixties espousing this radical view.
Holdren's fingers are all over our economic decline. He advocates for the systematic dismantling of U.S. exceptionalism believing that the world will be better off with a weakened America.
One of the things I get from folks who only promote the ‘headline-verdict’ position on this is that seem to think the world has had a constant temperature outside of an ice age here and there. When I bring up your point, they start to stutter, and then the ‘anti-science’ insults come.
The LA Times editorial board takes Gov. Perry on for his stand on Social Security, National Defense and Global Warming.
Who would intentionally weaken their own nation--unless their true allegience lies elsewhere?
Unfortunately, little (and large) heads have been stuffed with pseudoscientific pap for two generations now, from "Weekly Reader" to National Geographic, to TV. Most are scientifically illiterate, and will buy what the official state-approved experts tell them--to a point. When your light bill says XX degrees colder than the same period last year--for a few years, people should get a clue.
In the meantime, the assassins of our economy continue to write new and more stringent regulations, moving the target, and shutting down more industry while our Government softens the blow of indigence by throwing bread and circuses for the masses--at our expense.
It is so blatantly unsustainable, it cannot be other than intentional.
Instead of directing their anger at those who have made them poor, the masses are deflected by the ringmasters on TV and in other media to hate those who strive to improve our lot.
As Charlton Hesston's character said in Planet of the Apes:"It's a madhouse!"
Yes, the manner in which scientists and others are being “influenced” into accepting the AGW position is a perfect example of Lysenkoism.
If you get a chance, take a look at Richard Feynmann’s commencement address at CalTech: Cargo Cult Science
It’s a great read and gives another perspective on science vs. propoganda.
I will apologize for going off on a slight tangent, but the latest trend in Education has been ‘research’. Funding, Grants, teaching methods and so on are all suppose to be based on ‘research’. Sounds scientific, except no one actually has come out and defined just what the standards for accepting or rejecting the results of the ‘research’ are. Basically, teachers, administrators, school districts and so on must comply with the policies and procedures that are based on so called ‘research’. Again, Lysenko’s policies were based on his own ‘research’.
U.N. official deplores Texas execution (story is accompanied with Ft. Hood shooting memorial picture)UNITED NATIONS, July 8 (UPI) -- "The Texas execution of a Mexican national puts the United States in violation of international law, the U.N. human rights chief said Friday.
High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said federations like the United States have a responsibility to ensure that individual states "respect the international responsibilities assumed by the country as a whole."
...."I am very disappointed that neither the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles nor the governor took steps open to them to prevent this breach of the U.S. obligations under international law from occurring," Pillay said."
Actually it's, 'Never go anywhere without a knife'. But 'Clive' will work here as well.
[It's really, 'Never have sex with a coworker', but this is my comment so I can revise as I feel :-)]
Thank you for the link.
Check out Post #29 regarding research departments (Perry wants to break them away from education).
Science Journals and their review mechanism have been taken over by global warming promoters. They freeze out dissenting scientific facts, research and articles. They promote consensus and libel opposition as "contrarian" denier science. They're making up facts to fit the warming narrative to give the EPA, IPCC and other Leftist organizations power and control. And their research is lauded and referred to as the latest understanding of science. It's being manufactured in university research think tanks and it's funded with our own tax dollars.
Dear Comrades’ Broadcasting System: Why don’t you just admit that anthropogenic global warming is a substitute for war, to enable the politicians to scare the people into running to the government for cover?
Too many people have forgotten how to THINK critically - how to get information and look at it logically. It’s as if they’ve been programmed to just accept authority and defend it for the good of the world.
I’m sick about the Weekly Reader and after 40 years canceled my subscription to National Geo. It’s “green” everywhere you look, every day, the drumbeat of guilt, the fear — the need to instinctively *think* — Will this product or my behavior HURT the environment and destroy the world?
Perhaps the need for “green” push back, like this article, signals that we have slowed their advance. So they must say louder that conservativs are the “hate science” enemy who must be silenced.
This is very scary and people better wake up.
“The Left always shows us who they fear.” — Rush Limbaugh. I hope the examples I’ve linked in this thread show how much the Left fears Rick Perry as president.
Without firing a shot.
