Former pizza executive Herman Cain surprised rival Rick Perry with an upset victory on Saturday in a Republican presidential straw poll in Florida, dealing a disappointing loss to the Texas governor two days after a shaky debate performance.

Perry, leading in the polls for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination to run against Democratic President Barack Obama, had needed a victory in what was an early test of strength to salve the wounds left over from a debate with his rivals on Thursday in which he struggled.

I agree that there was less bad-mouthing of Perry than there was failure to give Cain any credit. Here, I will paraphrase the article for you:

Can beat Perry. Perry Perry Perry, Perry Perry. Cain. Perry Romney. Romney Perry.

Well, certainly they used facts, but adjectives like "shaky", "disappointing" and "struggling" are used to describe Perry, while Cain is referred to as a "pizza executive." Let me rewrite the sentence to illustrate my point.

Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Herman Cain surprised rival Rick Perry with an upset victory on Saturday in a Republican presidential straw poll in Florida, more than doubling the tally earned by the Texas governor two days after outshining him in the debate.

Perry, leading in the polls for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination to run against Democratic President Barack Obama, was hoping for a victory in what was an early test of strength to solidify his lead among Republican voters, but was surprised by Mr. Cain's hard work amongst the actual straw poll voters.

Like that...

The good news is that Cain has enough money to buy the votes in the Florida Straw Poll.

Funny, long-time FReeper Nauti Nurse was in Florida and she says the exact opposite - that Cain did not have free food or free trinkets. And that it was Cain's own strong showing in the leadups to the vote that won it for him.

So unless you can link to some kind of proof that Cain bought this straw poll in a Romney-eque manner, I'd say you pulled that opinion out of a place normally visited by doctors with flashlights.

I was at the P5. Cain was on fire! Perry was toast after the debate you could feel it in the room.

A lot of posters on this forum have the staying power of a dandelion, shifting with each change in the political breezes.

Perry didn’t get to be a 10 year governor in Texas by giving up at the first sign of adversity or quitting after making a mistake.

IMO, the worst thing one can say about Cain is that he may have some serious adjustments going to DC and trying to make a difference there quickly.

That’s why he would rely on someone like Newt Gingrich, a fellow Georgian, to lead his transition team.

The good news is that Cain has enough money to buy the votes in the Florida Straw Poll.

Please get your facts in order before posting false information. The only candidate at the Florida Presidency V who sought to influence delegate votes by purchase was Rick Perry. Perry invited every delegate to a breakfast Saturday morning. We didn't attend.

Herman Cain's meet and greet Friday night did not provide food or beverages. There was a water cooler in the back of the room. No free trinkets. Buttons, signs and t-shirts were for sale outside the room. Every last item was purchased by the large number of attendees.

Hi there--I've been following your posts about the events in Orlando. Chances are we brushed past each other somewhere along the way.

Herman Cain earned every straw poll vote he received yesterday. He campaigned relentlessly, earnestly and smartly. He is the Great Communicator. Ronald Reagan would be proud.
