IMF, World Bank eye carbon tax on fuels

THE World Bank and IMF are proposing global carbon taxes on aviation and ship fuels in developed economies to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, according to a draft proposal seen by AFP today.

The proposal suggests an international charge on aviation and maritime bunker fuels of $US25 per ton of CO2, which it said would "reduce CO2 emissions from each sector by around five to 10 per cent".

Such a charge, if implemented well, could also bring in $US250 billion ($256.86 billion) in taxes in 2020, according to the report, which focuses on how funds to fight climate change can be mobilised.

The report recommends the plan for the "Annex II Countries" of the UN Climate Change Convention, including most developed economies.

To the enlightened liberals who are so much smarter than me... /sarc

I am sooooooo tired of this climate change, save the erf, it’s for the children (those we don’t murder before they are born), “green” garbage.

Carbon dioxide is plant food. It is essential for all life on the planet. Carbon dioxide is a trace gas. It always has been, it is now, and it will be in the future.

If you burn petroleum products thoroughly, you get carbon dioxide and water vapor, i.e., moist plant food.

Taxation without representation? Sounds like a TEA Party issue (Taxed Enough Already). Where does the IMF derive their power of taxation?

More importantly, we had to cut down a lot of trees, burn a lot of coal, and dig tons iron ore to find, collect, and make the most use of oil.

Whether they want to admit it or not, we're going to need a lot of petroleum to make the next breakthrough in energy.

Carbon dioxide is plant food. It is essential for all life on the planet. Carbon dioxide is a trace gas. It always has been, it is now, and it will be in the future.

And the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere has been steadily decreasing over the history of the earth, such that it has been estimated that life will exist only for another 100 million to 1 billion years. (Link on my home page.)

These loons would hasten the end of life on earth just to increase their power to control other people.

“THE World Bank and IMF are proposing global carbon taxes on aviation and ship fuels in developed economies to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, according to a draft proposal seen by AFP today.”

What a coincidence, the IMF is looking for a bailout.

Question to the left, how will a ship going from point A to point B reduce emissions if they pay money? Who are they paying the money?

A reduction in commerce, that's what we need to pull the world out of it's economic doldrums. /s

If you want to see who will pay this tax “LOOK IN THE MIRROR”.

Sure the airlines and shipping industry will pay the tax, and then PASS IT ON to the consumer.

YOU Mr. and Mrs. America, Europe and Asia.

It is the consumer who will have to come up with the tax money, but they arent really taxing you, they make it look like they are taxing the shipper.

WTF up . This is just another tax, another way to steal from the consumer and you are supposed to be stupid enough to think they are getting that money from airlines and the shipping industry.

It will not hurt the Shipping industry or the airlines, products will still be shipped, the planes will still fly, but YOU my friend will be paying more for your products and your flight.

The only life they are concerned about is their own life of luxury and privelege at other people's expense.

Imported products, imported oil, and vacation travel by air are all highly overrated anyway. Who really wants a car made in Europe or Asia? Who really needs a plasma TV anyway?

Us common people can learn to do without these things. Soon they will affordable only to government bureaucrats.
