APNewsBreak: Perry urges Obama to halt air rules

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Monday asked President Barack Obama to use his executive authority to prevent or delay implementation of stricter pollution standards, saying they will have an "immediate and devastating" effect on the state.

The standards have stirred up Texas' largest energy companies, which say they don't have adequate time to meet the deadlines without shutting down plants and jeopardizing the reliability of Texas' electric grid. Implementation of the rules starts Jan. 1.

In the letter, obtained by The Associated Press, Perry said the implementation of the Cross State Air Pollution Rules will have an "immediate and devastating effect on Texas jobs, our economy and our ability to supply the electricity our citizens, schools and employers need."

Perry released the letter as he tries to shore up support among conservatives in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

The White House said the new standards will save lives.

"We stand behind common sense, vital Clean Air Act protections for public health and clean air," White House spokesman Clark Stevens said. "This rule will prevent over 34,000 premature deaths each year and ensure that American families aren't suffering the consequences of harmful air pollution generated far from home."

Turning the power off in Texas, that will help Obama’s numbers. What a d#ck. I have had just about enough of him punishing Texas.

Well, he can’t have Texas being a success, he’s trying to destroy the country so he has to destroy Texas. Fortunately, he won’t succeed.

Texas can invoke Force Majeure and halt the EPA actions, no? Why not?

Perry can order Texas Rangers to arrest and deport EPA officials and agents provocateurs back to the beltway.

Just say no. Obama cuts off the money, that’s a 2-way street.

The plan is no air-conditioning for a long hot summer next year.

Use the civil unrest to impose martial law, and “temporarily” delay the elections for a generation or two.

The article states, this will "prevent over 34,000 premature deaths each year."

This is ridiculous. Unemployment and deterioration in the community will help to prolong lives? Crime, violence, and health suffers as a result.

Reading these idiotic, stressful fairy tales cause premature deaths.

Lack of air-conditioning always helps to keep the sick and elderly live longer. /sarcasm

Hell yes!!!!

I think Perry is too wimpy to do it, though.

Like him or hate him.... I guarantee the last man in the White House the EPA wants is Rick Perry.

Yeah, at best this is a one sided story. As with any public work there are benefits and risks, and I smell junk science even yet. I daresay an order (or two) of magnitude more than that many lives would be put in danger by the artificial scarcity of electric power this would create.

I don’t think they’d be too happy about Bachmann, Palin, or Cain either.

Texans are now being served up horse manure with their side of peas.

Perry said that he would NEVER sign an EO as President, but yet he is insisting Obama do it. I am all for dumping the EPA but how can you demand some to sign an EO but yet promised never to do so themselves.

Note that in this case, “using his executive power” would be appropriate, since he is already using his “executive power” to implement the regulations that have no basis in current law.

I know you hate Perry (so much so that you believe it is right to call down God’s wrath on his candidacy), but still....

The EPA is an executive branch agency. It is making executive regulations. The President is an executive; he can sign an executive order stopping his own executive branch from issuing what amounts to an executive order through regulation that doesn’t match current law.

Anyway, when do you think Perry said he would never sign an EO? He is on record saying that on day one, he would sign an EO eliminating as much of Obamacare through waivers as he could.

When he was saying what a mistake it was to sign the EO over the vaccine, he was asked if he would sign an EO as President and he said No he never will. Some of the others said no to signing EO’s too. I don’t hate Perry.....I just think he should stay in Texas and finish his job for the state. He needs to think about his policies and perhaps come back in 2020 after 8 years of the Republican candidate....hopefully with proving that he is against illegal aliens like taking back the illegal bennies that he is giving. That would be a start.

Nationwide, the rule will cut delirability of electric by 20% and rates will skyrocket as plants implement these costly measures, as well, many plants uurrently being built

Perry said that he would NEVER sign an EO as President...

Do you have a source for that?

Not saying he didn't say it, but I haven't heard anything about that.
