How badly has MSNBC been hurt by the loss of Keith Olbermann? Enough, apparently, to be on the verge of falling back into third place among the cable news networks.
The ratings results for the month of September show that CNN, long relegated to third place in the prime-time cable news competition, is edging its way back up, while MSNBC is moving in the other direction.
For the month, CNN averaged 257,000 viewers in prime time in the category that counts most to the networks viewers between the ages of 25 and 54 because that is where the advertising money goes for news programming. MSNBC was just barely ahead with 269,000 viewers. (Neither approached the leader, Fox News, with 526,000).
Both CNN and MSNBC had one especially strong night because of the Republican presidential debates. With those excluded, however, CNN beat MSNBC, 219,000 to 207,000. A year ago, when Mr. Olbermann still occupied the 8 p.m. hour, MSNBC edged CNN by 83,000 viewers, with 256,000 viewers for MSNBC to 173,000 for CNN.
The change in the September ratings was most noticeable at 8 p.m., where CNN has moved its best-known host, Anderson Cooper. The networks performance during that hour has improved by 38 percent over last year, growing to 215,000 viewers from 156,000.
On MSNBC, meanwhile, Lawrence ODonnell has lost 100,000 viewers from the numbers Mr. Olbermann posted last September, with 185,000 viewers in the 25-to-54 age group, a drop of 35 percent. (Bill OReilly on Fox, as always, dwarfs his competitors with about three times as many viewers, 611,000.)

MSNBCs biggest name, Rachel Maddow's (Mark Levin calls her Rachel Madcow) audience dropped 15 percent this year, to 245,000 from 289,000.
She still beats Piers Morgan on CNN in the 9 p.m. hour, but his show has improved 18 percent over Larry Kings ratings last year, with 193,000 viewers to Mr. Kings 164,000.
And Cartoon Network outdoes them both. COMBINED.
“And Cartoon Network outdoes them both. COMBINED.”
Most of those viewers are adults, who will likely vote Obama.
“It’s an ill-concieved poor product ... “
Agreed, but there are some things they almost did right. The format of Morning Joe is far superior to any other morning show. The problem is Joe and Mika just ruin the show.
They were in second place???
Considering how they undermined our troops and war effort in the GWOT by slandering the CinC as a 'war criminal' and exposing top-secret national security info, Ft. Leavenworth would be more appropriate.
Notice how carefully the Slimes avoids mentioning Fox, the number one cable news outlet.
Anybody else remember the old days when businesses had to make money?
That collection O’Clowns was at number 2?????
Gadzooks, our education system is much sicker than I ever imagined.
What's the deal with women like Mika and their "Callista Gingrich eyes"?
MSNBC has simply become unwatchable. Sharpton is painful to watch, and listen to. They're all buffoons.
MSNBC's shelf life expires on election day 2012.
In the real business world, CNN, MSNBC, would merge to save themselves.
Interesting. Only parenthetical references to Fox News, the overwhelming leader.
Other than the mention of O’Reilly, you are correct. The article is based on a race to the bottom! IMHO...
*** What’s the deal with women like Mika and their “Callista Gingrich eyes”? ***
It’s beyond that with Mika. Her histrionics give her the appearance of someone with serious mental issues and a strong urge to use the restroom.
Mika is so in the tank for Obama it’s hilarious. I’m so looking forward to next November’s elections.
Spitting Chrissy Matthews has stepped up to challenge!
Chrissy has seized the opportunity and will not be out liberaled ever again.
You can’t watch that pure liberal bs for too long. They show a conservative say something non controversial, then they spin convoluted leftist stuff for the next 15 minutes.
Did you know Scott Walker cut a measly 1.6 million from the education budget - over two years! They spun it like he marched kids off to a gas chamber.
Did you know when Walker says he wants to give kids the “tools” needed to learn, that is his code word for destroying education?
The real problem is liberals don’t make any sense that’s why nobody watches. How long can you watch Maddow in front of the Hoover Dam as “proof” we need a huge federal welfare system. And btw, liberals oppose dams that’s why no more are built!
I on the other hand eagerly look forward to when they have to cancel Al Sharpton’s show because of abysmal ratings, and the loud cries of racism.
