Ford Motor Company has shelved a television commercial indirectly criticizing its competitors for accepting government bailouts to avoid bankruptcy in the wake of media criticism and, reportedly, a call from the White House.
The ad, first uploaded to YouTube months ago, was part of a series featuring real-life customers who were thrust into press conferences where actor/reporters asked them to explain their decisions to buy a Ford.
"I wasn't going to buy another car that was bailed out by our government," the customer, Chris, said in the ad. "I was going to buy from a manufacturer that's standing on their own: win, lose, or draw. That's what America is about is taking the chance to succeed and understanding when you fail that you gotta' pick yourself up and go back to work. Ford is that company for me."
The ad came under fire earlier this month when various media outlets began to point out Ford's apparent hypocricy, noting that while the automaker did not receive a government bailout, CEO Alan Mulally urged Congress to aid the industry and accepted various federal loans.

Thought police strike again
Ford undoubtedly also got a little call from some UAW leadership... “Nice little company ya got there... hate to see anything bad happen to it...”
did Mulally get threatened with a kneecapping?
This is creepy if true — that the White House is pestering Ford(*) for daring to try to make hay out of the FACT that Ford didn’t need or accept a bailout.
(*— And Ford not only is a huge company that, one would hope, would not easily be intimidated, but ALSO is full of UAW workers.)
Truth hurts. Disappointed in Ford for caving to whiny liberals with their hands out.
questions or death threats from the white house thug patrol?
The Goosesteppers have spoken!
Ford still has union thugs working for them, and union thugs who aren’t working form them, still receiving paychecks, do they no? If so, the time will come when they need a bailout, so they better be nice.
Pricktator Obama strikes again.
I’d pull it too. Then run it during the Superbowl.
Too good to leave it on the shelf.
Yes, which is part (and only part) of what was so monstrous about the GM bailout giving majority ownership to the UAW. Ford is now competing against its own workers.
Questions from White House = Threats
A great ad!
The Minister of Propaganda
in the White House pulled
the FORD ad.
Won’t be long we’re going to need to purchase two vehicles, and Ford is at the top of the list. Edge, and Flex. Already have an old F-150 I’ll run ‘til it dies, but have to replace the other two.
Yet Ford is taking gauranteed gov loans at 2%
And Ford is the next target in the UAW's contract negotiations. No doubt the union wants the same deal as Government Motors gave them when they settled a few weeks ago. After all, GM is nothing more than a government employer not unlike schools, cities and states that have employee unions.
There, fixed it for you.
Looks like I was right anyway.
Note that those are DOE/ADV Tech loans (at 2% higher than Solyndra got). Ford is in a tough spot. In order to sell trucks (which they are very good at), in order to comply with Federal CAFE (fleet average mileage) standards, they have to sell a bunch of small/fuel efficient cars (which they’re not very good at.
Get rid of CAFE altogether and set mileage standards based on gross vehicle weight. That would allow Ford and GM to sell trucks (which they are good at) and let Honda and Toyota sell small cars (why THEY’RE good at). The whole industry would be better off.
I seem to recall ads from GM stating that they had paid back all the government loans only to learn that, oops, they lied. They still owe.
Just a different name, my FRiend.
Well, so much for our first Amendment rights.
How much more of this before we start to take our country back?
When are people going to wake up? Why is the left ok with this behavior? Their boy is setting all sorts of precedents.
My ‘01 GMC Sierra was due for replacement but in a trade, it was worth $3,000 less to the Ford guy than the GMC dealer. I had planned to buy a Ford, having purchased four Explorers and a couple of Tauruses. The 3 thou and the 100,000 mile warranty put an ‘11 GMC Sierra in my garage.
GM? - Hell no!
Chrysler? - Hell no!
Ford? - Not if you are going to fold to intimidation.
Toyota? - ?????
What is a truck buyer to do?
But this is beautiful.
More reporting of this kind of threads, please! - “criticism from the media and questions from WH”
WHY on earth is the media critizing Ford’s ad?
Which makes the poor guy and his family an Obama target.
You can hear the interview here:
“questions or death threats from the white house thug patrol?”
That my friend, is what white guilt put in the White House - “community organizer”.
Ford and GM have the best small cars out there now. The Chevy Cruze and the Ford Fiesta and the Ford Focus.
Ford will soon have the best all electric car out there too.
The Electric Focus.
It no longer makes economic sense for companies to try to manufacture anything in the U.S. due to the Marxist anti-business regime in Washington. The next election holds the key. But if I was on the board of Ford or Boeing I’d be actively exploring manufacturing options in Canada and other receptive countries.
I’ll take your word for that, but my friend who is chief mechanic for the largest Ford dealership in Arizona always refers to the Ford Focus as the Ford F**kus (for what that’s worth). Maybe things have gotten better in the last couple of years.
Rhetorical, right ?
Customer Chris will now get the free, gubmint Joe the Plumber background check.
That was the previous gen Focus.
The one out now is completely new and the class of the field.
VW- make unions prosper and flourish in countries I DON’T live in.
Like I said, I’ll take your word for it.
When the Gov’t controls everything, everything becomes political.
The Chicago Way... again.
That is exactly why I now have my first Ford.
Nissan (Titan) - made in Mississippi by NON-union workers
Well, this white guy don’t feel no guilt. I voted for the chick and the old guy
I'm not holding this against Ford, given the current environment. The only way we can beat this is to refuse to support their government/UAW owned competitors and vote the Dems out in 2012.
