Iran says could deploy navy near U.S. coast: report (RED on Drudge!)

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran raised the prospect on Tuesday of sending military ships close to the United States' Atlantic coast, in what would be a major escalation of tensions between the long-standing adversaries.

"Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders," the head of the Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, according to the official IRNA news agency.

powerful presence close to American marine borders

Let's see. the US Navy can routinely deploy the following in the vicinity of Iran:

While the Iranians, if they are lucky, might be able to get the following somewhere in the vicinity of the US, tailed by as many nuclear subs, patrol aircraft, shadowed by as many US Navy vessels (shal we say "escorted") as necessary to assure complete and total overkill.

That is their single largest and most modern combatant, and would have to be accompanied by their single, old replensihment ship. Any single US Arliegh Burke Destroyer or US Nuclear Submarine would utterly destroy both vessels before the Iranians even knew they were there, from well beyond their sensor range, if it came to it.

The three US Nsvy Carriers above (with their three escorting Ticonderoga AEGIS Cruisers, their six Arleigh Burke AEGIS Destroyers and replensihment ship and escort...not to mention three nuclear attack submarines also escorting them) could literally engage and destroy the entire Iranian Air force and NAvy, and take out most of their infrastructure if we felt we had a reason to do so...and still have eight more carriers and thousands of US Airforce aircraft in reserve for any other contingency.

most of the bums posting on this thread don’t know what an EMP attack is...

Isn't that what you end up with after a Big Mac attack?? You know, Extra Mustard and Pickles? (FYI, I used to maintain SLFCS radios for SAC)

All you have to do is look what happend to the Miami Area in 2005 after Hurrican Wilma hit........ NO power.

EVERYTHING came to a grinding halt. the only saving grace were backup generators - and those would be slag in an EMP strike.

No power, no electronics- which means cars, appliances, computers, Cellphones, IPODS, IPADS..........

NOT a happy prospect.

I know, lots of intelligent people here. I believe Imadinnerjacket is attempting to provoke the US much like the Chia Pet in N. Korea. They may find that when words turn to action their fates will be similar to Saddams. This, of course, depends greatly on who is in the White House at the time.

...Buy this book bookmark...

Scariest book I've ever read. Another poster says that an EMP attack is too complex for Iran. I hope to God he's correct. I hope it's too complex for anybody.

What’s to prevent our CINC from establishing ROE where our forces have to wait until they are hit before they fire back? Perhaps even then to wait for presidential approval to return fire.

All this talk of how we would handily deal with the Iranian Navy neglects to take into account who we have in charge.

“Most of us will get knocked down to the 60’s after the power is restored 2-3 weeks after the initial attack.”

Sorry, but it would be far worse. The pulse would take out the circuitry in most modern vehicles; any vehicle made after 1985 or so would be in danger of never running again. This would completely halt all food transportation and refrigeration, without which we cannot re-supply store shelves.

The government commission on this danger released a statement predicting that we could see up to 90% casualties in the first year after a major pulse event, most deaths due to starvation or the inevitable violence that would happen.

There is also an issue with the transformers. People in the business have said that it would take months to years to manufacture and transport the number of transformers needed to completely restore power. Most of the equipment isn’t even made in the US, and we would be dependent on China to supply them... fat chance.

This is a very great danger.

Don’t they have to build a working bomb first?

As long as they stay out of the twelve-mile limit, they are fine. However, if they cross that line, I can think of a few fighter wings from Maine to Florida that would greet them warmly.

“If recent history is any indication, we will respond with a couple of small frigates, full of gay sailors...”

And yellow submarines.

Exactly. Ahmadinejad wants panic-stricken reactions from Americans. Well, my great-grandfather shot at invaders on his land, and my uncles shot or bombed Nazis, and my brother shot VC and NVA... I'll just keep calm, man the binox and the radio, and call in gunfire.

It’s not too complex. The latest rocket tests that have been reported show they have achieved some low-orbit launches.

It won’t be long before they can pull this off.

“No power, no electronics- which means cars, appliances, computers...”

Few vehicles + no truck transportation + no refrigeration = no food.

Mass starvation would be the result. We cannot feed our current population with 1850s technology.

They don’t need a fleet. They only need one boat and the capability to make a low-orbit launch, and we’re toast.

And they don’t care about surviving the encounter.

Who is going to tow them here?

Do they even have a ship over 1,500 tons?

No need to apologize...You were just poking some fun...read several of the threads posted down the line....Mea Culpa is fine...

We would be able to track and identify who triggered the EMP and our military would respond in kind. Utter destruction for the country that did it....

Iran doesn’t yet have the capability nor the will to carry it out. BTW, most of our military assests are EMP hardened.

As a EE, the single high altitude nuke scenario taking down the entire country is farfetched, it would take multiple nukes strategically located and at the correct altitude to take down the entire nation. Again, beyond Iran’s capability.

The only thing we have to fear from the Iranian Navy is that there ships leave an oil slick just outside our teritorial waters that eventually washes up on shore.
