Why young Christians aren't waiting anymore
CNN ^ | September 27th, 2011 | John Blake

Posted on 09/27/2011 7:15:57 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

A young Christian at an purity rally spreads the word.

True love doesn’t wait after all.

That’s the implication in the upcoming October issue of an evangelical magazine that claims that young, unmarried Christians are having premarital sex almost as much as their non-Christian peers.

The article in Relevant magazine, entitled “(Almost) Everyone’s Doing It,” cited several studies examining the sexual activity of single Christians. One of the biggest surprises was a December 2009 study, conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, which included information on sexual activity.

While the study’s primary report did not explore religion, some additional analysis focusing on sexual activity and religious identification yielded this result: 80 percent of unmarried evangelical young adults (18 to 29) said that they have had sex - slightly less than 88 percent of unmarried adults, according to the teen pregnancy prevention organization.

The article highlights what challenges abstinence movements face. Movements such as “True Love Waits,” encourage teens to wear purity rings, sign virginity pledges and pledge chastity during public ceremonies.

Yet many of these Christian youths eventually abandon their purity pledges, Relevant’s Tyler Charles concludes in the article. Tyler talked to people like “Maria,” an evangelical woman who said she wanted to wait until marriage to have sex.

But she said she started having sex with her college boyfriend when she turned 20 because nearly everyone, even most of her Christian friends, were having sex.

Once they are convinced that “everyone’s doing it”, they don’t see a reason to wait. As I have always said, no one is sorry they waited but plenty are sorry they didn’t.

The pop culture gets to them too, they go to publik skoolz and they watch prime time TV.

It is time we conservatives get actively involved in taking them down for real.

The oldest lie in the book “well, everyone else is doing it”

My husband and I both waited and we enjoyed our wedding night and lots of great nights (and days) in our 26 years of marriage. Plus, we raised our kids to also wait and as of this writing my daughter (24) and my son (22) have also waited and both feel that their love for the Lord allows them to wait upon HIS provision of a mate.

Of course I don’t believe this is true for a second coming from CNN. Their agenda is to normalize child sex in any and every way possible and to make parents give up.

If the kid is old enough to have sex, he/she is old enough to move out and live on their own.

I always find it weird when the media refers to Christians as a third party. Aren’t we a Christian majority nation still (even if it’s only on paper)? You’d never hear people talk like this decades ago.

Nice for their claims that they found a Christian (? — not familiar with Relevant) magazine to apparently back them up. I wonder if the MSM was involved with the studies. Though even better-respected firms like Barna (of Frog In The Kettle fame) have long born the sad witness that other marital dysfunction such as divorce is virtually as common in the USA among people calling themselves Christian as among the unchurched.

The MSM and schoolz are doing everything they can to give kids the impression that everyone else is doing it.

What did the teacher on GLEE called girls who didn’t want sex on Valentines, oh thats right “cold fish”.

Worst show on TV, or one of them. Don’t let your kids watch TV.

Presumably that means from birth, or maybe from conception... as if for most of a childhood the child would normally care. Still, being a virgin that late isn’t common. Even if autoeroticism isn’t counted, it’s also uncommon for men to be virgins that late.

Cold fish? If it’s gefilte, I think it’s yummy. In a properly sealed jar it keeps a long time, and it can also be served warm or hot when ready.

This is a fallacy. A have heard this falsehood repeated over and over again, and as we know-if a falsehood is stated often enough- people will accept it as fact.

There was a book recently published which addresses this fallacy. I’ll try to search for the title and author for you.

My son goes to a Christian high school, and he was telling me that he has heard that his high school has one of the higher abortion rates around. He said at the public schools they go ahead and have the babies, but at his school they secrety get abortions.

His school is very, very conservative and very anti-abortion.

Part of the problem is the presure from the media and school. The bigger problem is the presure from the church to date through high school and college before getting married.

For a while I had been hearing about a “second virginity” movement for those who had sexually erred when younger but now embraced the wisdom of saving “it” for marriage. I don’t know if I lost connection with those circles or if the movement itself fell flat.

"Young Christians . . . "

Who says they are Christians? How do we know the young people referred to are Christians?

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that they are "religious" and involved in 'this or that church." Of course, this would not at all mean that they are "Christians."

Peer pressure can be overwhelming but I have heard of examples like this-- and becoming sexually active at twenty is one helluva lot safer all the way around than starting at thirteen or whatever. If her intentions of abstinence helped her wait till 20 then it was a relative success.

The research on abstinence supports this hypothetical--that it helps delay sexual activity sometimes for several years until the girl or boy is more mature and at least better able to handle it. Of course the pervs at CNN won't tell you that part.

I spend quite a bit of time on a high school campus and also a college campus.

On the high school campus I see pregnant girls almost every time. On the college campus, I almost never see pregnant students.

They are either all on birth control or have abortions.

If committed evangelicals are really showing it in their conduct, I’d love to hear that. Barna might be casting his net a bit wide, as he reports coming across a lot of nominal Christians who say they don’t believe in the deity of Jesus Christ or some other deeply foundational tenet of the church universal that cuts across all recognized branches and denominations.

Anyhow, what nominal Christians do at a particular time and place doesn’t change what’s right and what’s not.

There is not a sitcom or anything else on prime time TV these days that isn’t one long line of sex jokes. None.

This is what kids are seeing and then the schoolz are telling them to go ahead and do it and handing out condoms.

Christianity and virginity are unrelated. I was a virgin in college when I was an atheist.

A Christian is Saved by faith in Jesus Christ, not saved by their virginity. It’s the right thing to do regardless of religion.

Parents let young people go off together in cars, when this, though common, is not normal.

Parents allow teenagers to "date," which is absolutely unnecessary, and is abnormal.

Professing Christian parents are wholly ignorant of Biblical courtship, which if taught by parents to children from a young age would embolden young people to resist modern American (post-Christian) culture.

“80 percent of unmarried evangelical young adults (18 to 29) said that they have had sex”

What the article doesn’t seem to go into is wether or not these kids were raised in Christian households and brought up in church or if they came to Christ AFTER making some mistakes in life.

It never fails to amuse me how some Christians forget that not everyone was raised in a Christian home.

I didn’t come to Jesus until 6 years ago (I’m 42) after a divorce and living a lifestyle that might make Jerry Springer blush. I came to Him with debt up to my eyeballs. Still haven’t gotten out from under enough of it to tithe properly but....He understands that I do what I can.

I don’t condemn these kids until I know more about their background. Even then? Love on ‘em, don’t condemn.

Yes.

And you will see many more pregnant students at lower socioeconomic high schools than high income schools.

And it is not because they have less sex at the rich schools.
