Why young Christians aren't waiting anymore
CNN ^ | September 27th, 2011 | John Blake

A young Christian at an purity rally spreads the word.

True love doesn’t wait after all.

That’s the implication in the upcoming October issue of an evangelical magazine that claims that young, unmarried Christians are having premarital sex almost as much as their non-Christian peers.

The article in Relevant magazine, entitled “(Almost) Everyone’s Doing It,” cited several studies examining the sexual activity of single Christians. One of the biggest surprises was a December 2009 study, conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, which included information on sexual activity.

While the study’s primary report did not explore religion, some additional analysis focusing on sexual activity and religious identification yielded this result: 80 percent of unmarried evangelical young adults (18 to 29) said that they have had sex - slightly less than 88 percent of unmarried adults, according to the teen pregnancy prevention organization.

The article highlights what challenges abstinence movements face. Movements such as “True Love Waits,” encourage teens to wear purity rings, sign virginity pledges and pledge chastity during public ceremonies.

Yet many of these Christian youths eventually abandon their purity pledges, Relevant’s Tyler Charles concludes in the article. Tyler talked to people like “Maria,” an evangelical woman who said she wanted to wait until marriage to have sex.

But she said she started having sex with her college boyfriend when she turned 20 because nearly everyone, even most of her Christian friends, were having sex.

Once they are convinced that “everyone’s doing it”, they don’t see a reason to wait. As I have always said, no one is sorry they waited but plenty are sorry they didn’t.

The pop culture gets to them too, they go to publik skoolz and they watch prime time TV.

It is time we conservatives get actively involved in taking them down for real.

The oldest lie in the book “well, everyone else is doing it”

My husband and I both waited and we enjoyed our wedding night and lots of great nights (and days) in our 26 years of marriage. Plus, we raised our kids to also wait and as of this writing my daughter (24) and my son (22) have also waited and both feel that their love for the Lord allows them to wait upon HIS provision of a mate.

Of course I don’t believe this is true for a second coming from CNN. Their agenda is to normalize child sex in any and every way possible and to make parents give up.

If the kid is old enough to have sex, he/she is old enough to move out and live on their own.

I always find it weird when the media refers to Christians as a third party. Aren’t we a Christian majority nation still (even if it’s only on paper)? You’d never hear people talk like this decades ago.

Nice for their claims that they found a Christian (? — not familiar with Relevant) magazine to apparently back them up. I wonder if the MSM was involved with the studies. Though even better-respected firms like Barna (of Frog In The Kettle fame) have long born the sad witness that other marital dysfunction such as divorce is virtually as common in the USA among people calling themselves Christian as among the unchurched.

The MSM and schoolz are doing everything they can to give kids the impression that everyone else is doing it.

What did the teacher on GLEE called girls who didn’t want sex on Valentines, oh thats right “cold fish”.

Worst show on TV, or one of them. Don’t let your kids watch TV.

It’s not that they are waiting, but rather they can’t.

Presumably that means from birth, or maybe from conception... as if for most of a childhood the child would normally care. Still, being a virgin that late isn’t common. Even if autoeroticism isn’t counted, it’s also uncommon for men to be virgins that late.

RELEVANT was first published in 2003. The magazine explores the intersection of faith and pop culture with the tagline "God. Life. Progressive Culture."
