A Florida man convicted of killing a police officer during a traffic stop 33 years ago has been executed at the Florida State Prison. The governor's office said Manuel Valle was pronounced dead at 7:14 p.m. Wednesday. He was the first Florida prisoner to be executed with a new mix of lethal drugs.

Valle fatally shot Coral Gables officer Louis Pena in 1978. He also shot fellow officer Gary Spell, who was saved by his bulletproof vest.

The constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. It does not guarantee a painless execution.

They should just OD them on heroin. People PAY to do that frequently. Sometimes they almost succeed, and PAY to do it again. It cannot therefore be construed as either cruel or unusual.

“The Danish manufacturer of pentobarbital, Lundbeck, has also asked Florida to refrain from using its product in lethal injections.”

Gotta love the Europeans with their morals. They are fine with people, who are no longer of any value to society over there, being put to death (as in euthanasia), but not the same here.

Huh? Thirty-three (some) years??

Without getting into the DP itself as an “issue”, the gold standard was prior to FDR taking office. He was in Florida, and some nut job tried to shoot him - while Roosevelt wasn’t injured, the mayor of Chicago, Tony Cermak was severely injured.

Halfway through the trial, Mr. Cermak died. So, in midstream the defendant was charged with murder.

He was captured, arraigned, charged, tried, convicted, and executed.

In Thirty-three DAYS.

It does not guarantee a painless execution.

And for all that, they get a painless execution anyway.

I personally dspise lethal injection as a form of execution. Bring back Sparky, hanging, or a firing squad.

The reason I say that is that I believe that an execution should always be recognized as the violent act that it is.

Execution is the State taking a life. I abhor the clinical, medical veneer of a lethal injection...

I was born and raised in Coral Gables. Graduated from Gables High as did both my sisters, my wife and our daughter. It's still my home. I have known many many Gables cops over the years. I remember when this happened. I was away at school, but heard all about it very quickly for the pre computer/pre- cell phone era. I didn't know either of the officers involved. I'm sorry it took 33 years to execute this scum bag. But at last a painful episode in the history of the City of Coral Gables and it's excellent PD has been (very) finally closed.

Good riddance, you POS. May you rot in hell, along with the taxpayer-paid do-gooder lawyers that delayed this for 33 years.

With a .45 you are not 100% sure of no suffering. Plus there is the blood splatter from potentially HIV contaminated blood.

Murderers on death row need to Man Up and stop all of their crying and whining about the sting they feel from the needle during their execution.
