Gail Collins: David, are you reconciled to the fact that Mitt Romney is going to be the Republican presidential nominee?
David Brooks: Oh, I went through that phase a few weeks ago after the debate at the Reagan library. Thats the night I noticed Romney was the best candidate in the field. Since then Ive noticed that he has given three debate performances that are better than any Barack Obama has given in his life. (Obamas a better speechmaker, but Romneys a better debater.) So now Im settling into the idea that Romney might well be president. This will be interesting because he has a tendency to hire people who look vaguely like him, so Im picturing a White House filled with tall, well-groomed brunettes.
Gail Collins: Romney is both intelligent and sane, which I guess is saying quite a lot this year. But the man would change his position on the rotation of the earth around the sun if he thought it would get him a win in South Carolina.
David Brooks: Thats why you should love the guy. Let me put it this way: Would you rather have someone who authentically agrees with Michele Bachmann or someone who is just faking it? It seems to me that from your point of view you should be praying for inauthenticity. The more, the better.
I spend a lot of time looking at whom the candidates are choosing as their advisers. Romney clearly has the best group. Hes harvested some of the best brains in the G.O.P. He released an economic plan the other week that was a pretty serious document, at least by the standards of politics these days.

Brooks is the bloody poodle of the NY TIMES. They wouldn’t hire anyone who was a real conservative.
“David Brooks pretty sold on Romney”
This is about the least surprising development of this young election season.
He likes the crease in Romney’s pants.
The ESTABLISHMENT has spoken.
People! Please don’t question the loyalty of David Brooks!
He’ll still support Obama in the general election.
The establishment Republicans are outnumbered in the GOP but they have so far seceded in dividing the TP conservatives. We need to rally behind one of the remaining conservatives in the races before romney’s momentum cannot be stopped.
He's supporting 0bama in the general election by supporting Romney for the nomination.
Perry is flaming out, and rest of the field are Tea Party amateurs. As it stands today, we're going to get stuck with Romney, because the Tea Party candidates will not prevail.
Romney’s “momentum” will be stopped by Sarah Palin at the appropriate time and place.
Brooks is probably at Romney’s house ironing his pants for him every morning.
A Palin would say about Romney: “Bless his heart” LOL!
Mitt Romney could beat Obama. If Mitt Romney is the nominee I’ll vote for him. But a Mitt Romney presidency would set the conservative side of the GOP back farther than either Bush I or II.

Spot on Hunton.
Marxism is all about lies told to a mass of ignorant thugs.
William Safire was a fairly good token conservative at the NY Times. He had to watch what he said (never speak out against abortion, for instance), but he wrote very well and sometimes came out with a good column.
In contrast, David Brooks is eminently ignorable. He is a clueless jerk, a sock puppet for Pinch Sulzberger. A mediocre stylist, and never even good for a laugh.
Well said.
Individual mandate supporters are disqualfied, period.
Remember his “I Am A Sap” column a week or so ago? I was the first commenter to that column and said that yes, you are a sap, if you hadn’t been so busy drooling over Obama maybe you would have done your job and we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in. Well, surprise surprise. That comment disappeared. What was left up there were all these oh so intellectual pro and con analyses of Obama ...and so on and so forth.
Poor wittle David Brooks...perpetually in search of balls.
You know, if I were David Brooks, I’d get together some buds and do a long sail, a la William F. Buckley, do a walk across Europe, do anything, just get as far away as I could from writing anything political for a long, long while.
“The establishment Republicans are outnumbered in the GOP but they have so far seceded in dividing the TP conservatives. We need to rally behind one of the remaining conservatives in the races before romneys momentum cannot be stopped.”
Almost there. We finally have a CONSERVATIVE who’s in the top tier (rather than people claiming to be so), so I think we’ll wind up ok.
Talk about the kiss of death.
This is the guy that told us Obama wouldn’t be a problem.
Well, now that “Step’N’Fetchit” Brooks has gone all in for Romney, I guess we all ought to line up.
Brooks reminds me of a physician who moved to Arkansas from NYC. He was nice but, he did not know the butt end from the barrell end of a shotgun and would pee his pants if I really looked at him mean. And ,I am a little blonde blue eyed southern woman. He just seems nervous all the time and a little out of place. Like this Brooks guy.
David Brooks?
Talk about an unselling point...
Palin is not running. At all. Stop the fairy tales and return to what the rest of us call “reality.”
Romney’s momentum is only gaining as opposing darlings of the moment flame out....Perry, Bachmann, etc. Cain is great but he won’t get the nomination.
It’s not the “media” or the “GOP establishment” that’s favoring Romney right now. I love Rush, but he’s off point here. It’s the average GOP voter, right of center, who want’s to find someone (ANYONE!) who can remove Barry from office.
Right now (and conceivably going forward) Romney is the candidate with the money, experience, history, recognition, and articulateness to do that job. Perry had a golden opportunity fall in his lap and he blew it epically. Say-Rah has played out her string, ran out of time, and will unfortunately end with an echoing fizzle.
That’s just the way it is....
Would anyone not think David Brooks pretty sold on Romney
that would anything new. It would also be like FNC pretty sold on Romney.
Am amazed they let it out.
Tokyo Rove, is that you?
Hey, it worked for mclame.....
Who cares about his latest mancrush!
If Romney is the nominee, I'm sitting this one out. A RINO is worse than the TOFUS. Because if we have a RINO, then everything coming out of the DC septic tank is "bipartisan" doncha know.... and that's what this country is about.
This is all you need to know when you think of Romney.
Isn't he just having a grand old time... the putz.
It tells u how smart I am..
Most conservatives will never go for Willard.
Only if enough of us work our butts off.
Actually u shouldn't say that...but the truth be know....
Anyone with a pair...would only have to look at his picture to know what u say is true..
He is the crease in Romneys pants.
I remember hearing the same thing about Giuliani.
Is that you Rudy?
No, G.I.
Rest assured that the Allied landing forces at Guadalcanal have done so with success and that the Japanese are now on the run. The beaches and lowlands are ours and we’ve made the airfields an issue in doubt. We will call the airport “Cactus Airfield” once we’ve secured it. Please let the Marines know that they can land here before long.
Signing off, remaining NCO of the Guadalcanal brigade, in the service of the great United States of America.
No Rudy here...........but there is a Mitt.
Just because you effed-up the last national election gives you no reason or right to eff up the latest one.
If you want to be stupid, there’s an entire Crat Party to help you with that.
Don't know about you....
But I'm shocked.......... and this is “unexpected"......
Didn’t David Brooks write that John McCain was the GOP’s best bet in 2008?
I know it’s hard...but hold your fire till we see the whites of “her” eyes....*W*
LMAO...after reading your past posts son...”reality” is the least of your concerns...professional help?..You Make the Call!
Romney or Obama?
Why bother to vote!!!
If Romney is the GOP candidate they FAIL!
If you want to be stupid, theres an entire Crat Party to help you with that.
Wow, I didn't know I was personally responsible. I thought it was "effed up" by the weak, effete, Republican elite who wanted McCain and who now want Romney. You know, the type of Republican that thinks Crybaby Boehner is effective. I know there are Republicans like this, but what are you doing on FR, a conservative site?
“Only if enough of us work our butts off. “
Agree (and thanks, there are still tons of Perrybots to deal with out there).
