Los Angeles (CNN) -- For the first time in U.S. history, the largest single group of poor children in any racial or ethnic category is Hispanic, according to a new survey.
Calling it "a negative milestone" in Hispanics' explosive growth in the United States, the Pew Hispanic Center study said in 2010, 37.3% of poor children in the U.S. were Hispanic, compared with 30.5% white and 26.6% black.
The Pew analysis of new census data put the number of Hispanic children in poverty at 6.1 million in 2010.
This negative trend has emerged as the 2010 census confirmed for the first time that Hispanics are the nation's No. 2 group, surpassing African-Americans.
Hispanics now make up 16.3% of the total American population -- but in the youth demographic, Hispanic kids comprise an even bigger share -- 23.1% of U.S. children are Latino, the study said.
The study found there are 6.1 million Latino children living in poverty, and more than two-thirds of them -- 4.1 million -- are children of immigrant parents. Of those 4.1 million, 86% were born in America, the study said.
The remaining 2 million poor Latino children have U.S.-born parents, the study said.

I’m willing to bet they count individual Latinos with multiple identities collecting multiple benefits as multiple individuals.
This stat will be very disturbing to the Congressional Black Caucus - now they’ll have to change their marketing.....
Whites are still number 1 !!!!!
Most of these "impoverished immigrants" pay several thousand dollars to establish multiple identities. They also get SS no's for anchor babies and use the no's themselves to suckup numerous US govt freebies. (more below)
RIDING THE US GRAVY TRAIN An illegal alien w/ wife and five children violates our borders. He gets a job mowing lawns for $5.00 or 6.00/hour. At that low wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax, so each year, he files an Income Tax Return to get "EITC---earned income credit" of up to $3,200 scot-free. He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent. He qualifies for food stamps and no deductible, no co-pay free health care. His children get free school breakfasts and lunches. The kids qualify for monthly SSI checks, faking ADD; the illegal and his wife get SSI if they fake being aged, blind or disabled; SSI qualifies them for Medicare. Plus illegals don't worry about pricey items like car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance, and qualifies for relief from high energy bills.
NOTE WELL: Earned Income Tax Credit is available only to immigrant workers who obtain legal work status. But the law allows immigrants to claim EITC for up to three years prior to obtaining that status. Workers simply file a tax return for the years in which they were not legally eligible to work in the US. The most widespread abuse stems from the requirement that children live with the worker for more than six months of the year. IRS does little to verify the claim. Many immigrants claim non-existent children, or claim children who theyve left behind with relatives. Those with two or more children and income below $32,121 could get as much as $4,008. It is estimated that illegals got $22 billion.
THE LUCRATIVE PHONY ID BUSINESS---DOCUMENTS FOR A PRICE July 21, 2006 -- Pelcastre brothers, Angel and Jorge, Dallas, Texas, were a walking threat to US national security, expert document forgers who, for a few thousand dollars, could give anyone a new identity.
The Texas brothers turned a NJ hotel room into a business office and were readying a massive cache of fake Social Security cards for delivery to a local NJ identity broker. The Texas brothers were a "one-stop shop" for a myriad of fake US documents, including birth certificates, Social Security cards, driver's licenses for any state in the US, passports and resident alien cards, said state police.
Officers happened upon two cars bearing Texas plates in a NJ hotel parking lot. Authorities wouldn't identify the NJ hotel by name for fear it would spark retribution from savage drug cartels operating in the US.
The Texas brothers were followed to a NJ office supply store nearby where they purchased computer supplies. Officers then followed the Texans to a NJ storage facility in Secaucus, NJ, where the Texans loaded several boxes into a car. One of them stood lookout.
L/E approached the Texas brothers when they returned to the NJ hotel and questioned them separately. The Texas brothers consented to a search.
Police recovered laminating sheets with built-in security features, pages of blank documents waiting for fake names and information, finished documents, computers and software to create the fake IDs.
All told, the haul was worth about $500,000 on the street. Police also recovered $6,000 in cash, which was the first payment from a NJ fake document broker for a shipment of 500 fake Social Security cards. ####
A little different with the Mexicans. When you have 12 people and 3 families under one roof pooling their 6 poverty level incomes, as a whole, they are not really in poverty.
With the blacks, you have 12 people under one roof and 1 poverty level income (the mom).
The Mexicans are family oriented people for the most part and manage to get by without the government teet (I am talking about the legal ones here).
And that income, more than likely, is coming from the government.
It is the responsibility of the American taxpayer to encourage the world’s poor to show up on our doorstep and fund them into prosperity!...........
just ask a democrat....
3 out of 5 Hispanics do not have a High School education and their children are at the mercy of their income which officially is zero. The government mixes in the children of illegal aliens with native born and that’s how the 1 in 6 children living in poverty number is figured. We are importing poverty from Mexico.
Also, this article fails to note that a lot of these families include multiple workers in the home who pool their money. Taken individually, it may appear that members of the family are poor, but taking the entire household income together, it is often otherwise.
Also, let's define “poor”. If you define it as income only, and exclude all the freebies that are available courtesy of the American taxpayer, you will get one definition. If you include the free lunches and breakfasts for your kids, free medical care, food stamps, etc you have a totally different definition. I am sure the first definition of poor is the one being used for this crappy study.
Whatever they spent on this “study”, I could have told them for half.
That was the point of my sarcastic post.
If the American Dream and capitalism were allowed to operate without over regulation and illegal immigration, it would ruin the socialist democrat’s pursuit of power and control.
Latinos...doing the socio-economic status Americans won’t do...
A) Illegal immigrants.
B) What's keeping them here?
“We are importing poverty from Mexico”
All with the acquiescence of RINO Republicans owned by big $$$$ donors using the cheap labor.
Thats because they breed like rabbits.
Oh, carp. Here it comes...
As I have been saying since 1991, we are importing a new underclass. I was 14 at the time and figured this out reading an article on America’s changing demographics at Time Magazine, not some right-wing source. (It was the moment that I realized that our political class is composed of idiots, traitors, and those who don’t like us) I still don’t understand how the demographics surprise anyone.
Somone call Ron Unz at the idiot wing of conservatism to let him know how great a plan to open America’s borders to the third world.
