NEW YORK (Reuters) - Protesters who have camped out near Wall Street for two weeks marched on Friday on police headquarters in Manhattan over what they viewed as a heavy-handed police response to a previous demonstration.

The Occupy Wall Street movement, whose members have vowed to stay through the winter, are protesting issues including the 2008 bank bailouts, foreclosures and high unemployment.

More than 1,000 people marched past City Hall and arrived at a plaza outside police headquarters in the late afternoon. Some held banners criticizing police, while others chanted: "We are the 99 percent" and "The banks got bailed out, we got sold out."

Among those pledging solidarity were the United Federation of Teachers and the Transport Workers Union Local 100, which has 38,000 members. The unions could provide important organizational and financial support for the largely leaderless movement.

First of all, I sincerely doubt this movement is leaderless. In all likelihood, they don't it revealed it's being sponsored by card-carrying socialists.

Additionally, there were warnings unions would throw their weight behind this. The same groups who professed to back the police unions in OH and WI are now against them in NYC.

Whoda thunk it...?

Anyone with sense.

Why would they do that? They want big government. They want all the rich to give their money to the government and convert to communism so everybody can wait on bread lines and live in ghettos.

It’s no surprise that the Unions mentioned got behind this, because these protestors started as being as spontaneous as the Tea party, but not even remotely as together as far as having a well thought out perspective. There’s a rather wide spectrum of people involved in this, not all of them on the Left, some nearly as apolitical as the early Tea party ranks. They seem easy pickin’s for organization and exploitation by Unions desperate for their own mini-Tea Party masses. Some of them are bound to fall away from the protests once they come to see this. It didn’t help the cause in the public eye that would-be exploiters like Michael Moore stopped by for support before the Unions.
But it DID help their cause when the pointlessly brutal handling by the NYPD was made visible for all to see on Youtube. Surrounding a group of women peacefully protesting (and they were)with a plastic fence “pen”, then spraying them directly in the face with Mace? Big tough guys. It was pathetic, and it made my blood boil.

including the 2008 bank bailouts

Those bailouts were necessitated by the Community Reinvestment Act, the work of Carter and Clinton, and by corruption at Fannie Mae, courtesy of the Congressional Black Caucus, Barney Frank, and the rest.

But note that they are still blaming it on Bush (2008), and that the Prostitute Media is going along with it.

Just before the election, the manipulators arranged to have that financial crisis, which made Bush and McCain look like fools and ensured the election of Obama. Curiously, one of the few things Obama ever did as a lawyer in Chicago was to sue the banks for not making enough loans under CRA.

Wall Street was largely controlled by Democrat contributors, and a few RINO contributors, while this crisis was building. But of course the agitators will blame it on the Republicans, and the press will happily spread their propaganda.

In fairness, it must be said that Bush was economically irresponsible, spent like a Democrat, and did little or nothing to stop all the pork from piling up on both sides of the aisle. But the Democrats are at the heart of it, and the RINOs merely play along with them. But no fear; it was all due to Bush's mean bank bailout of 2008 and the Republican elitists of Wall Street. That's their story, and they're sticking to it. And regretably nobody in the Republican leadership has done much of anything to show them up or fight it.

PROTEST THE GOV’T YOU STUPID BASTARDS. PROTEST THE CAUSE NOT THE EFFECT.

I'm not particularly in favor of this group. However, you need to understand that it is the international banks that purposefully froze credit in late 2007 in order to bring about an economic reset.

Governments of the world are powerless to do anything about it, except attempt to deficit spend and hope that the banks turn the credit spigot back on soon.

History shows that this most likely won't occur for at least another seven years - and will present itself through international war.

more home grown terrorists

Who has this group "terrorized". As near as I can tell they have assembled in a public place to express their grievances.

You may not agree with what they have to say, but they do have a right to say it - just as you have a right to call them "terrorists".

Have we conservatives become so propagandized that we only throw out cute little cliches? I'm seeing more and more of that on FreeRepublic over the years. It's sad.

Useful idiots mostly. Heavy on the idiot.

Are you saying that the international banks did not freeze credit in late 2007? Are you saying that governments around the world are not trapped in deflationary spirals caused by the banks?

Idiots? Maybe it's us who are the "useful idiots" by sticking up for the international bankers on this thread.

Just a thought...

They're calling it "Day Of Rage" after Bill Ayers's Weather Underground's "Days Of Rage" in 1969. A collection of communist-anarchist groups is behind it.

The following is from their website:

"Gleeful about the raging riots that held England captive this week, the tweet has gone out to activists and ‘disaffected’ youth to “occupy wall street Sept 17” today. Social Networks FaceBook and Twitter are abuzz with plans for coming anarchy on U.S. soil.

The Days of Rage will continue beyond the ‘occupation’ of Wall Street with activists being told “bring your tent”.

The Days of Rage riots in Chicago took place over a 4-day period beginning October 8, 1969, after members of the Weathermen, a militant offshoot of the Students for a Democratic Society, converged on the city to confront police in the streets in response to the trial of the group of anti-Vietnam War activists known as the "Chicago Eight".
