Perry promotes his years of experience taking on illegal immigration, tries to blunt criticism
Washington Post ^ | Oct 1, 2011 | AP

Posted on 10/01/2011 8:55:43 AM PDT by Clairity

His aides believe that his decade of experience as a border-state governor bolsters his credibility on immigration and border security.

He said he vetoed a Texas bill that would have given illegal immigrants driver's licenses, helped pass a bill requiring voter identification at the polls, spent $400 million on security measures to help secure the state’s border with Mexico, and strongly opposed granting amnesty to people who illegally entered the United States.

"I'm a governor. I don't have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing," Perry said. "I have to deal with these issues."

Folks have shown countless examples of how to greatly reduce, if not virtually eliminate, illegal immigration.
Still, there are always those people who keep acting like nothing will work.
Or, they say a fence won’t work...when noone says just a fence. Its a combination of things.
If Perry’s argument is the Federal government is responsible for illegals in Texas. Does that mean if he became President he would stop illegal immagration?
Doesn’t sound like it because would make him heartless?

Wow! No, you are the joke and a liar to boot.

Perry is a good conservative who deserves his fair share of criticism for a less then ideal immigration record, but the constant assaults from know-nothing yahoos like you don't hurt the Governor. They just make you look stupid.

>>>>>You have attacked Freepers as being racist and xenophobic

Hey, if the shoe fits... If you're going to use bs data or hyperbolic opinion from the creations of nativist and eugenicist John Tanton, who also has direct ties to the Pioneer Fund, a white supremacist group. Then you deserve all the hellfire attacks you get.

>>>>>>I have been following your posts on Perry and the illegals.

No you haven't. I've never supported illegal immigration and never will. Your lies make you look foolish and out of touch with reality. You are one sick puppydog.

A lot of people have a very visceral anti-Perry feeling. They seem to enjoy attacking him, like it gives them emotional satisfaction.

With Cain, I have to think he doesn’t feel so anti Perry in his gut, but that he endorsed Romney in the past tells me he would easily endorse Romney now...that is, if he himself does not get the nomination.

So, I think with Cain it’s a political calculation more than it is viscerally anti Perry.

And that’s a huge problem for me.

Mr Cain needs to hear from the other side, from those who would vote for any of several candidates including Perry.

He needs to know the silly situation he has placed himself in. Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minutemen, has endorsed Rick Perry’s positions on border security.

But Cain can’t vote for Rick Perry, and would endorse Romney in a heartbeat and would help enable Obama to get back in the Presidency by withholding support from Perry the nominee??

Whoa!

Anybody got an insider line to Herman Cain? Or is Cain a Romney set piece? So don’t bother?

“Boots on the ground” is a joke because they can be removed or juggled around with a snap of a finger. A permanent structure such as a fence guarded by border patrol is the only true effective solution along with cutting off benefits and the job magnet, all of which Perry opposes.

A good summary of Dim Rick.

Wow, a lot insults packed in there.

I am surprised you didn’t call me “heartless” like your illegal loving hero, Rick Perry.

All I need to know about Rick Perry’s record is to see his results over the last 10 years. Millions of illegals have invaded Texas and Rick Perry, the former Democrat, and his crony capitalist friends all looked the other way and dumped the social costs of the illegals onto the taxpayers.

I will never support any candidate that does that, regardless of his economic record.

What makes you look stupid is that you support somebody like that, and you call Freepers xenophobes and racists because we want the federal government to enforce the laws and the states to stop enabling and supplicating to foreign criminals at the expense of the American people.

Now, go play with your pinata.

At the moment Cain or Santorum are far above the rest.

If Santorum is the nominee I know I would vote for him and pray that he wins. Cain I'm pretty close to putting in my Romney camp. We will find out who the nominee is and hopefully it will be someone who can win and win BIG.

One thought on the immigration issue. I'm Pro-Life and that is my line that I will not cross. However, I have to work within the political constraints of our country and where the voting blocks are. IOW, I can't get an absolute ban on abortion, but if I can get waiting periods, ultrasounds, restrictions on clinics, parental notification, and licensing requirements I will support candidates that are for them even if they don't support everything I want.

I am never going to convince some that Perry did the right thing on the education issue, but if you see that he's supporting most of what you want he's a heck of a lot better than someone who says he will but has no history of doing anything. In the end we need obama out, Pubs controlling both houses and as Conservative a POTUS as we can get.

So, I won’t be reading this thread. Sometimes you just can’t take a bunch of ignorance any more.

The same can be said for you. You can't even grasp the simple concept that when you encourage illegal behavior you get more of it. The last 40 yeas of politicians turning a blind eye to illegals should have taught you that anything other than zero tolerance for illegal aliens is capitulation to the pro amnesty marxists.

Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minutemen, disagrees with you.

He endorses Perry out of all the Republican candidates specifically on his policies on achieving border security. You can read it here:

Rick Perry and the Republican Bind on Immigration

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2786401/posts?page=13

Cain endorsed Mitt Romney in the last Presidential election. I’m not saying Cain is as bad as Romney on Romney’s bad issues, I’m saying it is bad that Cain ever endorsed Romney and would do so again. And would vote for him, but would not vote for Perry even against Obama, so Cain says.

Sarah isn’t yet running. Many vow she will, others vow she won’t. I don’t know.

She isn’t being attacked from every direction in a debate, unlike Perry. Some Sarah supporters say that’s just brilliant of her. Looks kinda unfair, just sayin’... Perry loses your possible supportl but you’re open, I guess, to someone who stayed away from that spotlight’s glare and those attacks from everywhere, left and right...

We know you’re not for Obama, but if you don’t support somebody against Obama you’ve deleted yourself from the fight against him.

So...who are you for?

On border security policy, Jim Gilchrist supports Rick Perry.

What limit would you place on illegal immigration for those fleeing their terrible homelands?

If I were president, I would ENFORCE the current laws. The problem that we have in America is that ever since Reagan granted Amnesty, the Presidents who followed him have refused to enforce the immigration laws.

For instance, an employer who knowingly hires an illegal alien is subject to fines of up to $10,000 per day. Has that provision EVER been enforced? Show me one example.

Is it any wonder why people from all over the world come here illegally?

“But Chris Christie is hardly the ally that illegal-immigration foes are looking for. In 2010, Christie told Politico that America needs to come up with a “clear path to citizenship.” He didn’t say “for illegal immigrants,” but since America already has a clear path to citizenship for legal immigrants, that’s what he meant. This is an entirely reasonable and mainstream position, but in much of the GOP, they call it “amnesty.”

You can insult me until all you please, but your insults won’t be able to disguise the facts.

You have made it clear, you care nothing about the legal and territorial integrity of the United States, and you call anybody who disagrees with that traitorous position a racist and xenophobe.

You can keep your liberal race card and your illegals and I will keep my country.

Very similar arguments were made about Bush and the damage done from his open borders policy dwarfs any of his good, including the excellent Supreme Court picks.

States all along the Southwest and beyond are finding bankrupt budgets from paying out on all the illegal alien criminals. When they try to do something judges and weasels like Obama fight them every step of the way. That's what compassionate conservatism gets you. I'm convinced Perry would be more of the same.

And you're right I want Obama out and if Perry wins the primaries then there isn't much choice. Once again we will have to hold Congress's feet to the fire not to give him amnesty since like Bush I'm convinced he'll push for it in the name of a guest worker program.

Whatever you think of Gilchrist, and nobody is without controversy, his whole schtick is border security and engaging citizens to fight the illegal invasion.

When he says Perry has the best border security stance of all candidates, while at the same time Cain says he won’t even bother to vote for Perry against Obama because of Perry on border security, something is wrong with the picture.

Cain needs to be informed of this. And he needs to be asked about it in a debate.

Not voting for Perry over Obama???

While Perry has a less then ideal stance on immigration, the issue of illegal border crossings is being demagogue by creeps like Willard and the hordes of malcontents slinking around.

Yes, you have to weigh the issues when you vote. Personally, I believe his experience on the issue will make him much more suitable as President. He will have the power that he feels he needed to correct the problems in his own state.

There are a few "malcontents," but I hope people that read some of the misstated facts will look into his record. As he said, if this country doesn't start working again--none of the other issues will matter.

Congress passed IRCA in 1986 and it became law. They failed to fund the enforcement provisions and probably more than 60% of amnesty applications were fraudulent on their face but granted anyway instead of less than a million there were about 3 million granted amnesty.

There were a few holes in the law quickly recognized and solutions presented that have not all been put in place nor funded. One of the largest cases was against Tyson Foods and its “rogue” managers.
Why is the President and Congress exempt from filling out I-9’s?

No sale. Take your compassionate conservatism someplace else. When it comes to the dollars in my pocket, providing for US citizens versus those here illegally- US citizens will ALWAYS- and should ALWAYS come first.

And that means no more anchor babies too.

And yes, I do begrudge them because they are taking away MY country from MY children and future generations. I begrudge them because THEY are sapping an already taxed healthcare system, auto insurance rates, etc. I begrudge them because they KNOW they are breaking the laws to get here, and use our own generosity for THEIR benefit.

And I begrudge YOU and everyone else who is making excuses for illegals, all because you want Perry to be President. You make me sick.

Fourteen years of experience in the Border Patrol tells me that every thing that Perry has done is nothing but political smoke and mirrors designed to placate people such as yourself. Perry’s desire to give illegal aliens in state tuition is just more evidence that he is not serious about securing the border.

If Perry becomes President we can look forward to not just in state tuition for illegal aliens but amnesty and whatever taxpayer funded goodies La Raza can come up with.

Why would *I* have to read the actual law ... it passed the TX state legislature with only 4 NO votes. It’s TX taxpayer money, neither federal nor Virginia taxpayer money. If the law were so controversial in TX, the TX voters/taxpayers can vote their legislators out of office. Ten years later Texans haven’t voted out their legislators or governor, so it must be okay by them. Not your problem or mine.

What's bad is when his defenders claim that it was something Perry had to do in 2001 because that's what the legislature wanted. Okay, fine, but what about in 2007 when Perry was still defending it when Republican legislators were trying to file bills repealing it? At some point those folks are going to have to accept the fact that Perry was encouraging illegal immigration, whether it was defending the DREAM Act in 2007, bitching Congress out in 2007 (from Mexico City) for not passing a guest worker program, or when Perry addressed La Raza's national conference last year.

For all those FReepers who are in love with Perry, I'd like to hear their thoughts on his addressing La Raza last year at their national conference.

Well maybe that INCREASE in the number of illegals is due to the fact that we have a very long border here in Texas reaching from NM to La and it borders Mexico only.

Maybe that INCREASE is due to the fact that we need more man power down at the border that most Border states do. And they don’t even have enough man power on their borders as it is.

Maybe that INCREASE is due to the fact that everyone up in Washington has said we really have no problems down here on our border and won’t listen to us tell them we need help down here.

Maybe all your chair potatoes who know exactly how to run this country and have all the answers to the illegal problems ought to come down here make yourself an appointment with Gov Perry and tell him your plan to make sure that no more illegals come across the border.

Cause believe me in the 11 years that Perry has been Gov of Texas and has tried to enforce the border from illegals crossing it NOTHING has worked to the extent that you people want it to.

We deal with the illegals the best we can down here and little to no help from our goverment.

What more do you want from us? Every man woman and child in Texas standing on the border with a gun to shot anyone who comes across it from Mexico?

Plus there are alot of American Mexicans who help these people when they get across the border and into the US. In every state of the Union believe me. You want papers they got them just give them the money and they can make you a US citizen in about 20 minutes.

Huckabee Campaigner and Minuteman threatening e-mail Scandal
The Huckabee campaign faces national scandal today, as recent e-mails sent by Minuteman Co-Founder and Huckabee campaign member Jim Gilchrist are released that threaten to malign another leader with false accusations of child molestation, pedophilia, embezzlement, and thievery!

The e-mail threat was received by Brook Young of the organization Immigration Watchdog, who is one of the 84 leaders who signed an open letter opposing the Gilchrist endorsement of Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.

Jim Gilchrist has endorsed Mike Huckabee and has been traveling on the Huckabee campaign media bus across Iowa making speeches of support at Huckabee’s side, at campaign press conferences and events. Gilchrist has also been on numerous talk radio shows promoting the Huckabee campaign as a highly visible part of the campaign in the national media.

“It is completely outrageous that a person so highly involved with the Huckabee campaign is sending e-mails threatening to malign an opposing organization leader with false accusations of child molestation,” says William Gheen of ALIPAC. “Huckabee and Gilchrist need to explain why a Presidential campaign is involved in these kinds of documented threats and vile mud slinging.”

The e-mail from Gilchrist, which threatens to malign Brook Young is on full display at ImmigrationWatchdog.com and ALIPAC.us

Mr. Gilchrist also sent out an “article” or press release to the Minuteman Project national e-mail list last night that contains many supposed quotes by Mike Huckabee that appear to answer all criticisms of the Huckabee immigration plan and record. The author is listed as “Perry Emerson, for Jim Gilchrist” yet initial research can find no proof that a Perry Emerson works for Jim Gilchrist or the Minuteman Project. The name only shows up on articles released by Minuteman Project, which contain topics that are attacks on others.

Google searches on the alleged quotes by Mike Huckabee, such as “I would make it my first act as president to pardon agents Ramos and Compean” show no results other than the Gilchrist release. The Huckabee campaign can provide no written evidence that Huckabee made these comments.

“Official campaign statements on important matters like immigration should be made directly by the campaign and not by proxy,” says William Gheen. “We will continue to look for evidence that Perry Emerson actually exists. If Mr. Gilchrist is putting out official statements under a false name and citing statements Huckabee did not make, then ‘Houston we have a problem.’”

ALIPAC is calling on the Huckabee campaign to officially confirm or deny the authenticity of the claims made in the Minuteman Project release and to clarify if Mr. Gilchrist is acting on behalf of the Huckabee campaign in his threats to spread false rumors of a graphic nature about organizations that oppose the Presidential campaign of Mike Huckabee.

William Gheen has notified ALIPAC activists and allied leaders about this situation through a letter titled, “The Madness of Jim Gilchrist” which is also found at www.alipac.us

And I begrudge YOU and everyone else who is making excuses for illegals, all because you want Perry to be President.

Palin's position is pretty much identical to Perry. Are you Anti-Palin as well as Anti-Perry?

Did Palin called border fences silly?

Did Palin publicly say the AZ law wouldn't work in Texas?

Did Palin offer in-state tuition for illegals?

Did Palin dismiss eVerify?

Did Palin continually blame the feds for immigration problems in Alaska then turn around and shoot down any state ideas to control the problem?

Did Palin call those who don't agree with giving illegals a free ride heartless?

Sorry, honey, but Perry is alone in the wilderness on this, which is why the other candidates are taking him on.

Other than her statement to Univision where she supported amnesty and a path to citizenship, I haven’t seen Palin take any position on any of those issues. As far as I can tell, she has been carefully avoiding taking a position. I suspect that her positions are fairly similar to Perry’s. Do you have any quotes from Palin on those issues?

Then you need to do more research, as her positions SINCE that interview have been posted over and over and over again on FR.

Yeah, that minutemen founder is a pillar of righteousness, isn't he?

Gilchrist’s “schtick” is MONEY. You pay, he plays. And he plays damn dirty.

Fine. Deal with the issues.

And then tell us how they've worked out.

But don't go calling critics of your decisions "heartless".

If you can point to concrete positive results instead of abstract theories as to how you "intended" for them to work out, point to 'em.
